Moriya is a former boxer whose eyes were so damaged in his first pro fight that it ended his career. Watase is a former yakuza whose partner was so moved by watching a boxing match (coincidentally, the very match that permanently injured Moriya) that he insisted on leaving the world of crime, taking Watase with him. Together, they are strangers who find themselves plucked from Earth at the instant of their deaths by an alien woman with the power to manipulate time. The alien wishes to use Moriya and Watase as subjects in an experiment she’s developed to determine if “recycling” methods used on her planet could be put to use in order to solve Earth’s energy crisis. “The human body is filled with energy,” says the alien scientist–energy that only need be extracted. For this purpose, she transforms Watase into a vampire whose mission is to collect vials of blood, and Moriya into a werewolf who must collect vials of semen (don’t ask me). For each vial collected, the two of them will earn 0.1 seconds “before impact.” In other words, they will gain back a tenth of a second of their lives before they both were hit by an oncoming truck.

Oh! My Brother, Volume 1

Ordinary high school student Masago has always lived in the shadow of her charismatic older brother, Shiro. Things change suddenly, however, when Shiro dies saving Masago from being hit by an oncoming truck. Grief-stricken and unable to accept that Shiro died in her place, Masago is unable pull herself together even to attend his funeral service, but Shiro’s best friend Yasaka soon gets quite a shock when Masago turns up on his doorstep claiming to be possessed by her late brother’s spirit. Though they first speculate that Shiro’s unfinished business is the upcoming school festival he worked hard to put together, it eventually becomes clear that his true mission is to help his little sister live a full life (as long as that doesn’t include romance with Yasaka). Though Masago claims to be happy with the arrangement and in no hurry for her brother to leave, how long can she truly be content letting him live on her body?

Though Oh! My Brother‘s concept sounds like a lot of fun, its execution is uneven at best, mainly due to the lack of time taken with character development, especially of the story’s supporting characters. The relationship between Masago and Shiro is certainly intriguing enough to be a fine candidate for a body/gender-switch scenario (and I think I may be the only reviewer to date not creeped out by Shiro’s sister complex) and the artist does well giving them individual traits and mannerisms when one or the other of them is in control of the same body. What’s tragically underdeveloped at this point is other people’s relationships with Masago and Shiro and how those relationships are impacted by Shiro’s death, particularly in the case of Yasaka, who is the only person aware of Shiro’s remaining presence in his sister’s body. Everything after Shiro’s death moves so quickly, it’s difficult to believe most of it and though there are some strong moments (Shiro’s explanation of his circumstances to Yasaka, for example) they aren’t given enough weight to effectively drive the story.

With its playful concept and strong artwork, Oh! My Brother has potential, but it will have to come a long way in its second volume to see any of it through.

At PCS: NANA, Nora, & Rasetsu

nora8Just a few quick links today to point out a few short reviews of mine over at Manga Recon this week. First of all, I checked out volume eight of Nora: The Last Chronicle of Devildom for a bonus edition of Manga Minis on Tuesday. With the huge advancements in character development made over the last two volumes, this volume pales a bit in comparison, but it’s still a solid end to the Fall arc, making way for the possibility of something greater than what the series has offered up to this point. If Nora and Kazuma really can change their fate, that will be an exciting goal to pursue and will hopefully keep the series on the upward track it discovered a few volumes back.

I came in to Nora a bit late as a reader (something that is suddenly very much related to a recent Twitter conversation on the question of whether or not individual volumes of manga can/should be able to bring a new reader into a series at any point) and one thing I must give the series credit for is just how easy that was to do. The story’s characters are always exactly themselves–no more, no less–which not only makes them unusually hospitable to newcomers, but also makes it all the more thrilling to watch them grow. I look forward to seeing more of that as the series continues.

nana19Also, in today’s installment of On The Shojo Beat, I review the latest volumes in two series, the first being volume nineteen of NANA, a long-time favorite of mine as you all surely know. This was a rough volume for me emotionally, thanks to my strong identification with a particular character and the serious pain she’s got waiting on deck for her right now. I’m struggling to avoid spoilers here (I even tried a bit in the review itself, though it was pretty rough) so suffice it to say, “ouch.” There’s a strong sense of impending doom for everyone in the series at this point, one way or another, but Yazawa always avoids that hopeless soap-opera rut in which it is obvious at all times that nothing good can ever really happen for anyone. Along with the sense of impending doom is a small voice suggesting that perhaps, after everything has exploded and the dust has finally cleared, it might actually be a better world for the survivors of this little universe. The story may be dramatic and filled with tragic misfortune, but its characters are ultimately in charge of their own destinies and there is never a complete lack of hope for any of them.

rasetsu3Lastly, I review volume three of Rasetsu. I was a bit harsh on this volume, I’ll admit, but I really feel strongly that if it is going to survive on its own, independent of the series it spun off from, it’s going to need to cut the cord–the sooner the better, as far as I’m concerned. Though Yako is certainly doomed to carry around sadness over the loss of his first love for quite some time, it’s more important to develop the story’s new characters than it is to come back to that issue over and over. It can’t be allowed to drop, of course, but there are much more subtle ways of handing it than what we see in this volume. I have some level of fondness for this series so far, so I’m really rooting for it to come into its own. Hopefully we’ll see that happen over the next few volumes!

Oz Vessalius, aged fifteen, is a carefree young aristocrat with an absent father whom he has emotionally replaced with his kind, attentive uncle. On the morning of his coming-of-age ceremony, he goofs around with his little sister, Ada, and teases his young servant, Gilbert, who is mortified to hear that Oz wishes him to be part of the ceremony, not as a servant but as a friend. The day is filled with oddities, such as the discovery of a hidden grave on the mansion property where Oz’s family ceremonies are held, accompanied by strange visions of an angry girl in a surreal, lonely place, and Oz’s sense of uneasiness begins to grow.

As his ceremony finally gets underway, Oz is shocked to find himself surrounded by cloaked figures ready to cast him into The Abyss, a place he has heard of only in stories as a terrifying prison where the world’s worst sinners are locked away forever. Though the proceedings are disrupted by the appearance of the girl in Oz’s earlier vision (whose dual appearance as an enormous black rabbit has earned her the nickname “B-Rabbit”), the cloaked crowd ultimately has its way and, branded with a sin he knows nothing about, Oz is thrown into The Abyss.

Once there, he finds himself battling “chains” (creatures of The Abyss who are anxious to eat him), though again he encounters the girl from his vision who introduces herself as Alice. Alice is also a chain, she tells him, and as Oz struggles for his life, she lures him into a contract that would allow them both to escape The Abyss. Upon their escape, they are greeted by three members of an organization called Pandora, who use Oz’s devotion to Alice (and Alice’s desire to recover her lost memories) as a tool to convince them to join in on their quest to discover the motives of the Baskervilles–the group who sent Oz to The Abyss in the first place.

That’s a lot of plot to spell out in a single review, though it really only scratches the surface of this whirlwind shonen fantasy. Impressively, though the story races along at an exceptionally fast pace, it is very easy to follow and its characters immediately take shape, evoking both sympathy and great interest from the beginning. Both Oz, whose carefree attitude hides significant intelligence and compassion, and Alice, whose aggressive, fearsome persona seems crafted to protect the psyche of a very damaged young girl, are immediately compelling. Even the three from Pandora–Sharon, whose youthful appearance seems a bit suspect, Break, whose attachment to a possibly supernatural doll-like creature (Emily) he keeps on his shoulder paints him as pretty much off his rocker, and Raven, a tall, dark, sullen man who seems unusually protective of Oz–are already distinctive and fairly enthralling, thanks to Jun Mochizuki’s clear writing and artistic skill.

Mochozuki’s art is central to the atmosphere of this manga, with its detailed character designs and settings. Much inspiration is taken from John Tennial’s vision of Lewis Carroll’s Wonderland, with the addition of Mochizuki’s own style which excels particularly in the story’s creepiest moments, such as Oz’s adventure in The Abyss. Mochizuki also has a tendency towards generously-sized coats and shirtsleeves that hang over the characters’ hands, which might suggest typical moe infantilizing if not for the fact that it is applied to male characters as often as (or more than) female characters. It is the costuming in particular that shapes Break’s character, for instance, rendering him strangely endearing instead of just terrifyingly crazy. These observations are not meant to belittle the writing at all, of course. In fact, it is the combination of both that creates these distinctive characters so quickly and with apparent effortlessness. The story’s actions sequences are unusually coherent and easy to follow, with a very dramatic use of contrast and paneling, matching its surreal setting beautifully.

As with any story as elaborately set up as this one, the real question at the end of a strong first volume is whether or not the author can effectively follow through with what’s been put into play. The series has offered more questions than answers at this point, relying mainly on the strength of its characters to hold the reader’s attention through the din. That said, there is enough promise in this fun, mysterious fantasy to ease all doubts for the moment and simply anticipate. Fast-paced, enigmatic, and attractive to the eye, Pandora Hearts is easy to recommend.

Beast Master, Volume 1

Yuiko Kubozuka is a seventeen-year-old animal lover whose over-exuberance unfortunately sends the animals she so loves running away from her in fear. When Yuiko’s intrusive attention finally drives her own cat up into a tree, a mysterious young man emerges from the tree’s branches, rescuing the cat and running off into the night. The young man is Leo Aoi, who is soon officially introduced as a new student transferring into Yuiko’s high school class. Leo, who was raised on a remote island and later lived in other areas sparsely populated by humans, is more comfortable with animals than people, a trait that makes him appear frightening to the other students in his class. Eager to thank him for rescuing her cat, Yuiko follows him up to the roof of the school, where she easily befriends Leo, who is grateful to meet someone who isn’t scared of him.

As she gets to know him, Yuiko discovers that Leo actually has a warm, almost childlike personality (as well as a close connection with animals that Yuiko truly envies). Unfortunately, he also has a rather terrifying mental condition that sends him into a violent frenzy whenever he experiences intense fear coupled with the sight of blood. Though this reaction served him well in the wilderness (where he was frequently under attack by wild animals) it makes him a real danger to other humans, and even his legal guardian, Toki, is unable to control him by any means other than shooting him with a strong tranquilizer. It is Yuiko, then, who discovers that she alone has the power to soothe the beast in Leo and bring him out of his frenzy.

Despite its horror-movie title and fairly implausible premise, Beast Master‘s opening volume can best be described as sweet. Both Yuiko and Leo share a kind of open innocence that is undeniably adorable, even when it is responsible for some of their greatest areas of ignorance (such as Yuiko’s consistent failure to understand animals and Leo’s difficulties with humans), and watching the two of them together is pretty charming. This volume includes standard shojo-friendly elements like cute animals, gang leaders with a heart of gold, innocent cuddling, and people doing their best, but regardless of the levels of believability and cliché associated with any of these items (and more) there is an unforced warmth running throughout the story that is pretty difficult to dismiss.

Also, though the premise is pretty simplistic, there is some real depth to be found in the execution for anyone who’s looking. Yuiko’s inability to connect with animals is incredibly painful for her, blinding her to her own strengths. Despite her focus on animals, she possesses an understanding of people that is unusually well-developed, a fact finally pointed out to her by a friend late in the volume, which is undoubtedly responsible for her ability to recognize Leo’s true self while everyone else views him with fear and suspicion. Because of this, she’s able to offer Leo the opportunity to actually live with other humans instead of being caged by them, something she clearly does not recognize the significance of at this point. With Yuiko at his side, Leo is able to safely make a place for himself in the human world, while Leo offers Yuiko the opportunity to learn how to truly love animals rather than simply forcing her will on them, something of which perhaps he truly does not recognize the significance.

With both characters maintaining a level of innocence unusual for their age, the thing that seems most difficult to imagine is romance, though the artwork gracing the volume’s cover (as well as its individual chapters) would indicate that this is where things are headed. This incongruous tone is a bit jarring at this point, and it will be interesting to see how smoothly the author manages to pull that off as the series continues. That said, the fact that the two leads are currently unconcerned with romance is one of the story’s nicest characteristics. Both characters are strong and nicely layered, even early on, and it’s nice to read a school-based shojo manga in which the heroine’s focus is on something other than getting a boyfriend. This is quite nicely reflected in the internal artwork, which is effective (if unremarkable) and nicely restrained, especially in terms of toning.

Though Beast Master is not as immediately addictive as some of its soapier shojo neighbors or as emotionally complex as others, it is both warmer and more thoughtful than its premise would suggest, making it a promising new addition to Viz’s Shojo Beat lineup.

Claymore 15 & a little link-blogging

claymore15To start things off, I have a review of volume fifteen of Claymore in this week’s Manga Minis column at Manga Recon. Before the eye-rolling begins over the high grades I’ve given recent volumes of Claymore, I’d like to say that I think it has really come into its own as a strong dark fantasy series and that those who dismissed it after the first few volumes are genuinely missing out. It’s true that I’m a patient reader and may enjoy a slow-burning series more than most. I love to watch multiple layers revealed over time, forcing me to continuously re-evaluate what the story is really about, and though it may seem a bit late in the game for the author to begin revealing those layers twelve or thirteen volumes in, in this case I think it’s well worth the wait. There aren’t many series from Viz’s Shonen Jump Advanced line that have endured for me as well as this one. It’s definitely worth a second look….

Shoujo Art Studio

shoujoartstudioJust a quick link this morning to point to today’s Otaku Bookshelf column over at Manga Recon, which includes my review of Shoujo Art Studio, a book that claims to contain “Everything You Need To Create Your Own Shoujo Manga Comics.” You can see what I think about that over in the review and also find the very silly one-page comic I made using the book’s tools and instructions.

Something I didn’t get into too deeply in the review, but which really bothered me while working with this book, is the author’s discussion of the history and nature of shojo manga which claims that “there are really no limits on what can be shown in a shoujo manga,” but then goes on with statements like, “Some heroines are still damsels in distress, but most are independent and successful in their own right. However, supremacy in school or magical combat rarely translates to confidence around boys!” Both the instructions and provided art reinforce the most overdone shojo clichés and it’s difficult to imagine what real fan of the genre could possibly enjoy this or find it of much use. With the background scenery provided–the school, amusement park, girl’s bedroom, etc.–it is a toolkit geared toward creating a parody of shojo manga more than anything else. I can’t even bear to discuss the outfits.

Black Bird, Volume 2

Misao Harada, already in the unpleasant position of having to depend on the dreamy yet controlling demon Kyo for her very life, finds things further complicated by the arrival of the rest of Kyo’s tengu clan. The new arrivals (all male, each prettier than the next) include Kyo’s older brother, Sojo, whom Misao also knew as a child. On the plus side, Misao finds out that Kyo fought to take Sojo’s position as head of the clan, presumably in order to marry her, lending additional credibility to his declaration of love. Unfortunately, deceptively mild-mannered Sojo turns out to be a pretty sick guy who will do anything to destroy Kyo and take back what was his, placing everyone’s lives in peril.

This is a fairly eventful volume that packs quite a punch, both in terms of romance and melodrama. Sojo is a truly hateful villain who even abuses adorable little tengu Taro and his brothers–the general equivalent of kicking an uncommonly cute puppy–making him incredibly easy to despise. Revelations about Kyo’s past with Misao and the memories that were erased from her mind by Sojo’s magic create a dark, romantic tone that would be difficult for any hot-blooded shojo fan to resist, despite the story’s sexually-charged violence. Unfortunately, this volume’s final chapter destroys the one thing that had, until this point, kept its misogynistic overtones somewhat in check.

In my review of volume one, I said that it was Misao’s clear view of her own situation that made the story palatable, despite Kyo’s deeply controlling nature. Misao knew that she was stuck depending on Kyo and hated it, highlighting both the poignance of her circumstances and her own personal strength, and presenting an opportunity for Kyo to be the one to change in order to be worth of her. This begins to erode early in volume two, as Misao falls further for Kyo’s charm and the bits of memories she’s clung to all these years. Still, it is possible to hang on as evidence mounts suggesting Kyo’s sincere intentions. Then everything falls apart all at once with a bit of internal monologue from Misao as Kyo unbelievably forces himself on her as a form of “punishment” for her behavior with his bishonen relatives.

He never has sweet words for me. He uses force to make me understand what he’s thinking. That’s why when he hugs me gently I can feel it. I get the message.

With these words, any hope of Misao remaining a strong heroine is lost and I suspect this series has lost me. Though it has great potential as a compelling piece of deliciously trashy shojo, I’m not sure it can come back from that. Prove me wrong, Black Bird?

Picks for Right Stuf’s DMP Sale!

Like many of you I’m a sucker for a sale and though I missed the recent sale on Vertical books while I was out of town (*snif*) I’ve perked up a bit over this week’s specials at rightstuf.com from Digital Manga Publishing, whose eclectic mix of titles (on sale through tomorrow, October 22nd) offers something for everyone. Taking a look at my review index, I realize I’ve actually reviewed very few of these, but my recommendations are as hearty as ever!

floweroflifeAt the top of my list are a couple of titles from the brilliant Fumi Yoshinaga, Antique Bakery and Flower of Life, both wonderfully quirky series as only Yoshinaga can produce. She has a great gift for painting her characters through dialogue that is uniquely hers and it is this that draws me most to her work. Also, she’s funny–really, really funny, yet simultaneously poignant and frequently deep. If that alone is not enough to sway you, check out Michelle Smith’s lovely review of Antique Bakery and Shaenon Garrity’s hilarious overview of Flower of Life. As Shaenon says at the end of her write-up, “Thank you, Fumi Yoshinaga, for continuing to be better than everyone!” …

xxxHolic, Volume 14

xxxholic14Today I have a short review of xxxHolic, Vol. 14 in a special Tuesday edition of Manga Minis. This series is so wonderfully rich and there is much I might have said about this volume, given more space. I’ll try to include some of it here.

First of all, one of the things I discussed in my mini is the level of warmth this series has taken on. The “sweet” moment I mention between Watanuki and Mokona, for instance, is so adorable one could die, and when Kohane asks Doumeki why he remains with Watanuki, the image Doumeki calls forth–Watanuki by the river on a particular rainy day–is enough to break one’s heart. That this is followed by Kohane asking Doumeki to “Take care of Kimihiro-kun… please?” is truly the final nail in the coffin.

It is here, too, that I must mention CLAMP’s effective use of paneling, because it is not so much the dialogue that does the work here, but the imagery. Doumeki doesn’t respond to Kohane with anything more than the squeeze of a hand, but the way that moment is built up–with a flashback to Yuuko’s ominous words about hesitation, individual profiles (cut narrowly within wide horizontal panels) of Doumeki and then Kohane, then a single page consisting only of a larger, fuller profile of Doumeki followed by a close-up of his hand squeezing Kohane’s–draws out the moment perfectly, giving it enormous emotional weight. Similarly effective means are used in the story’s next scene too, in which Watanuki confesses his new resolve to remain in this world. The panels are clean and heavy on contrast as is usual for CLAMP (especially in this series) and this deceptive visual simplicity, much like simplicity of language, allows for stronger statements than could ever be made with more verbose visual language.

This volume is filled with foreshadowing, which I suppose is no different than the rest of the series to this point, but at this point the foreshadowing contains a sense of urgency and immediacy that has not been present before, at least to this extent. That a customer arrives in the middle of it all–something we haven’t seen for quite some time–might appear to break the momentum, but it actually seems to be a part of it somehow, with Watanuki taking on Yuuko’s usual role. A later scene with the voices (but not the bodies) of Maru and Moro only strengthens this feeling, and the book’s final scene sets an uneasy, anticipatory tone for the next volume, despite the unearthly calm of its participants. Will it be Watanuki who is able to grant Yuuko’s wish after all, just as he has hoped to do? It seems likely that we will find out soon.

What read as cold philosophy at the beginning of this series has become intimate personal drama fourteen volumes in, and even Yuuko can’t pretend to be detached from the story’s outcome, particularly as concerns Watanuki, whom she obviously loves. Though I think it goes without saying at this point that reading Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle has become an essential part of understanding this series, there is something deep at the core of xxxHolic that stands entirely on its own, and nowhere is that clearer than in this volume.

Though Boys Over Flowers‘ main story finally concluded after 36 volumes, neither fans nor mangaka Yoko Kamio were quite content, thus the release of Boys Over Flowers Jewelry Box featuring two side stories set after the series’ final volume. The first of these follows heroine Tsukushi Makino, now out of high school and working as a clerk in a real estate office to pay her family’s bills. With boyfriend Tsukasa still in New York, former love interest Rui has taken to visiting Tsukushi’s family regularly, becoming so familiar he even addresses her father as “dad.” When the whole group is assembled in Paris to witness the wedding of Rui’s former crush, Shizuka, Tsukasa clearly demonstrates his jealousy by asserting control and throwing money (and insults) at Tsukushi, as usual. The second story focuses on Rui, his uncertainty over his future, and his difficulty letting go long-held feelings for Tsukushi.

Unlike many fans, I felt quite satisfied with the way things were left at the end of volume 36, with true love finally settled (at least for Tsukushi and Tsukasa) but not so settled that the character’s futures were unnecessarily narrowed. After all, the story’s heroine was still in high school at the end of the series, and I think I’d have felt incredibly uncomfortable if things had been left any more certain than they were. That said, there is something decidedly comforting about sneaking a peek into Tsukushi and Tsukasa’s future lives and seeing them still bumbling along in their fiery-yet-conservative romance, as awkward and volatile as ever. Though it is disconcerting to see Tsukasa falling back into his worst, most controlling self at the first twinge of insecurity, demonstrating very little personal growth since the end of the series proper, if there’s one thing that has been made clear over the course of the series, it is that Tsukushi can handle herself regardless of his behavior.

Even nicer is the look into Rui’s world, something that remained largely mysterious throughout the series particularly in terms of his feelings for Tsukushi and, really, women in general. With its thoughtful, melancholy look at Rui and his place both in Tsukushi’s life and within the F4, this volume’s second story is quite plainly the best reason to buy it. I’d consider it a must-read for any fan.

Though this manga offers nothing on the level of Boys Over Flowers‘ greatest drama, that is perhaps the secret to its charm. Short but not too sweet, Boys Over Flowers Jewelry Box provides a nicely quiet postscript to this deliciously melodramatic epic.

NANA Project #3!

First of all, the third installment of the NANA Project is up, in which Danielle Leigh, Michelle Smith and I discuss volumes five and six of NANA. In this installment, we focus heavily on the addition of Trapnest to the regular cast of characters, and particularly Hachi’s involvement with Takumi. After a quick opening set in the future, where Hachi, Yasu, Nobu, and Shin contemplate how best to track down Nana whom they’ve determined must be in England, the story returns to the present where everything is finally coming together the day before Blast’s tour is ready to launch. Nana is pumped, her voice is solid, she’s got Hachi in her corner, and even her home life with Ren, newly returned from recording overseas, is humming along nicely. Unfortunately, Shin’s personal turmoil is taking a toll, driving him into the arms of sugar mama Ryoko, with whom he gets arrested for marijuana possession, causing the tour to be canceled at the last minute. The rest of the volume focuses mainly on the aftermath of this–how the members of Blast will move on, particularly Nana, whose newly re-established easiness with Ren collapses quickly under the stress. Meanwhile, Takumi tries to figure out how to help Reira deal with the situation, finally addressing her relationship with Shin in a realistic way, in a scene that is tied closely to the Takumi-centric side story included at the end of the volume.

One thing that is particularly striking in this volume is that the forced breakup of Blast and subsequent events places Nana in an isolated enough position that the gap between the present and the future narration suddenly seems much less wide than it has up to this point. Also, with implications made about Shin in the opening “future” chapter (in which Yasu tells him he should be grateful his agency let him back in the business) being explained in this very volume, it really feels like the series of events immediately related to Nana’s eventual disappearance are finally unfolding before our very eyes.

There are a few really interesting reactions amongst the characters here in this volume, which feel unexpected and completely realistic all at once. Displaying just how well-suited she is to Yasu, Miu, tasked with giving the news to Hachi and Takumi, is the voice of reason, dispensing rock-solid advice to Nana (and harsh truth to Takumi) when it is most needed. Takumi, usually poised to step up in any kind of crisis, actually seems rather sad and helpless when he’s faced with the demise of Blast, despite the fact that it isn’t even his band. He is unusually warm throughout this volume, watching other people’s worlds falling apart around him, and his offer to help Reira find a place where she can meet up with Shin after he is freed is almost touching. “It’s not your fault. I drove you to it. I drove Shin into it,” he says to her with uncharacteristic emotion and candor. “But I didn’t mean to take away your happiness. I didn’t start Trapnest to do that to you guys!”

Almost comical is the reaction of the sleazy press guys, who seem to feel somehow hurt by the whole situation, as though they have an actual stake in the success of Blast whose members they’ve tormented with threat of scandal since the beginning. Nana waffles between selfish (if understandable) anger, regret, raw ambition, and abject terror over the prospect of being on her own as a performer. That she is eventually able to recognize that Yasu’s pain over it all must be as great or greater than her own and is able to actually act on that realization (by determining to go solo to keep not just herself but Blast in the public consciousness) is a huge sign of growth for her.

This entire volume contains enough emotional complexity to inspire an essay almost as long as the volume itself, but perhaps the most compelling bit of all is the Takumi side story at the end. He’s always been a character who is pretty easy to hate, particularly for readers who identify strongly with Hachi, and though the side story does not ease any of that Hachi-related resentment (and in fact, makes it quite a bit worse) it does humanize him in a way I would not have thought possible, making sense of his actions, even the worst ones (perhaps especially the worst ones). This side story, more than any of the others that have been included so far, is crucial to understanding the deep disfunction at the core of Trapnest and provides a huge amount of insight into Takumi, Reira, and even Yasu, and how their mutual history continues to shape the present.

The more I examine the way Ai Yazawa has conceived and developed these characters and the complex web of love and pain that binds them all together, the more impressed I become. This series remains fantastic and utterly addictive in the best way possible.

Jin is a normal, happy-go-lucky high school student with unusually strong fighting abilities, something which has caught the attention of his friend Fusano, who suspects there is something “a little bit different” about him. As it turns out, what’s different about Jin is something his father and sister are determined to keep secret, especially from Jin’s estranged brother, Soichiro, who makes a living displaying his own abilities for the entertainment of the masses. When Soichiro approaches Jin’s sister, Toko, with a view towards bringing both her and Jin into his world, it becomes clear that their family relationships are not what they seem. Toko rejects Soichiro’s advances, appalled by his use of secret techniques for show and clearly terrified of what could happen to Jin should she be unable to protect him. Undaunted, Soichiro finds his way to Jin through more devious means, setting up a fight he’ll be unable to refuse.

When I first read this manga several months back, my impression of it was “competent but unremarkable.” Now on my second read, my perspective has changed a bit, and I find myself quite drawn to these characters and their world. I’m especially partial to the women, Toko and Fusano, and their mutual ability to take care of both themselves and the primary object of affection in their lives, Jin. This story doesn’t quite pass the Bechdel Test (at least not yet) but these women are strong, smart, and tender, and they can hold their own against the fairly terrifying men around them. Toko, particularly, displays such stirring affection for Jin, even now I find myself returning to the book’s middle chapters to catch a glimpse of it once more. That Fusano, one of the most skilled young fighters in the story is used by Soichiro as helpless bait to lure in Jin is truly unfortunate, though it is such a common occurrence in manga of this kind, I can’t quite bring myself to get worked up over it as I should. There is a lot of talk, even from Soichiro, about Fusano having the potential to be a “real martial artist.” I can only hope this will be developed more as the story goes on.

What remains a great mystery, even by the end of the volume, is any hint as to the origin of Jin (and Soichiro’s) power, aside from a vague implication that they may not be fully human. With the true relationship between them yet unexplained, it is also unclear exactly why Soichiro is so anxious to bring Jin to his side or even what that really means. After all, Soichiro seems to be mainly using his abilities to attract money and fame, at least on the face of it. What hidden truth makes Toko so desperate to protect Jin from him? The man is sleazy, there’s no doubt about that, but what’s behind it all? It is these questions that most drive me to want to pick up the next volume.

Another thing The Battle of Genryu: Origin has going for it is the fact that its fight scenes are both fairly intense and easy to follow, a combination that is often difficult to find in this type of manga. I expect the fighting only appears realistic to those of us who honestly know nothing about it since even I must question some of the physics involved, but realism is pretty far from the point. If you’re looking to escape shonen battle clichés or for any kind of sincere insight into the martial arts, this is definitely not the book for you. The artwork overall is generally attractive, if not unique, and there are some unexpected touches here and there in backgrounds and a few bits of paneling that actually evoke a shojo-esque feel.

Though it would be difficult to shift my assessment of this manga as “unremarkable” at this point, there is definitely a warmth and charm to it that I did not pick up during my first read which makes that a real possibility in the future. With this in mind, I’ll be genuinely interested to see where it goes from here and whether the elements of it that I’m most drawn to remain enough of a focus to continue. Though I can’t quite recommend this series’ first volume, fans of light-hearted battle manga may find something here to hook them, along with a hope of better things to come.

Hikaru no Go, Volume 17

At the end of volume sixteen, having reluctantly agreed to a game with Isumi, Hikaru finally found Sai in the most obvious place of all: his own game. This volume opens with Hikaru tearfully facing that truth as well as the realization that the best way for him to honor Sai is to continue to play Go. With this new determination, Hikaru confronts Akira after a match (one that has raised Akira into the Hon’inbo League) to inform him of his return. Fortunately, a match between the two of them is already on the schedule, one which they both anticipate eagerly.

Meanwhile, higher-ups in the Go Association, the upper echelon of pros, and members of the press dedicated to the game are all getting excited about the “new wave” of powerful young players rising up in the ranks, viewing it as both a personal call to arms (in the case of the pros) and a much-needed potential for revival of the game in Japan. As Hikaru and Akira finally face each other over the goban for the first time in over two years, rumors of their rivalry re-emerge among the other players, feeding this new excitement.

After volume sixteen’s shift in focus, it is exciting to be back in Hikaru’s thrall once more. Having recovered his true energy, he pulls the story along at full speed, so much so that it almost feels like Akira must come after him rather than the other way around. It is a real pleasure to see these characters on track together again–their rivalry rendered nearly poetic by the likes of Hon’inbo title holder Kuwabara, who sees Hikaru and Akira as equally gifted geniuses, dependent on each other in their quest for the “divine move.”

What’s especially refreshing about the writing in this series, however, is that even though this rivalry is heralded as something divine in nature, it does not diminish the importance of the story’s many supporting characters, each with his/her own batch of worries and rivalries–not even the students back in the Haze Junior High Go Club–but instead portrays each of them as a vital part of the living, breathing entity that is Japan’s Go. There is such warmth in each chapter as writer Yumi Hotta takes the time to linger over each of the characters’ personal stakes, great or small, and it is this feeling that allows this story to be intensely dramatic and completely down-to-earth, both at the same time.

This volume has a fantastic energy throughout, but the real drama emerges in the penultimate chapter, in which Akira admits to Hikaru that he sees another person inside him, only to be further shocked when Hikaru all but admits it. This leads beautifully into a dream sequence for Hikaru that easily brought me to tears.

Though my consistent recommendation of this series may appear excessive, it has evolved at this point into such a wonderfully crafted story, it’s very difficult to find fault. From its increasingly moving plot to its consistently fantastic artwork, the true elegance of Hikaru no Go continues to impress me with each new volume.
