Manga the Week of 12/14/22

December 8, 2022 by Sean Gaffney, Michelle Smith, Ash Brown and Anna N Leave a Comment

SEAN: Another juggernaut of a week, as publishers try to get everything out before Christmas.

Airship has two print debuts. Qualia the Purple (Murasakiiro no Qualia) is a one-shot light novel that comes from over ten years ago, about a girl who can analyze people as if they were robots, and the one other person who accepts her for it.

ASH: The publisher describes it as a “romantic science fiction thriller with a yuri core,” which does sound like something I would enjoy.

SEAN: Sword of the Demon Hunter: Kijin Gentōshō is a historical drama from 2015, 11+ volumes so far. It’s about a swordsman who must hunt a demon… through TIME!

ASH: As does this one, if I’m being honest.

ANNA: I enjoy demon hunting swordsmen.

SEAN: Also in print: Drugstore in Another World: The Slow Life of a Cheat Pharmacist 6 and Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear 12.

And we get early digital releases for Loner Life in Another World 4 and The Weakest Tamer Began a Journey to Pick Up Trash 2.

Ghost Ship gives us Booty Royale: Never Go Down Without a Fight! 9-10.

J-Novel Club has some print titles. Ascendance of a Bookworm’s 12th manga volume, By the Grace of the Gods 11, How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom Manga Omnibus, 4, Marginal Operation 12, Slayers Vol. 7-9 (a hardcover), and Tearmoon Empire 7.

ASH: I really should catch up with some of these.

SEAN: No digital debuts, but we do see the 9th manga volume of Black Summoner, The Conqueror from a Dying Kingdom 2, Culinary Chronicles of the Court Flower 8, Der Werwolf: The Annals of Veight 15 (now caught up with Japan), the third manga volume of Housekeeping Mage from Another World: Making Your Adventures Feel Like Home!, the third manga volume of Oversummoned, Overpowered, and Over It!, Re:RE — Reincarnator Executioner 2 (a final volume?), and Reborn to Master the Blade: From Hero-King to Extraordinary Squire 7.

Kodansha hunting time. Print books: Attack on Titan Omnibus 8, Go! Go! Loser Ranger 2, Lovesick Ellie 7, Orient 12, and Sayonara Football 14.

ANNA: Always happy to see more Lovesick Ellie, I need to get caught up.

SEAN: Digitally, there is A Condition Called Love 11, Giant Killing 34, Girlfriend, Girlfriend 11, My Maid, Miss Kishi 6 (the final volume), Police in a Pod 19, Tokyo Revengers 28, and Yamaguchi-kun Isn’t So Bad 7.

MICHELLE: Hooray for more Giant Killing!

SEAN: One Peace has the debut of Captain Corinth: The Galactic Navy Officer Becomes an Adventurer (Kochuu Gunshikan, Boukensha ni Naru), a fantasy AND SF title from Dengeki Playstation. A spaceship captain lands on a fantasy planet.

ASH: Gotta love a good genre mash-up!

SEAN: Debuting for Seven Seas is a Mature title that is apparently too gay for Ghost Ship, however. Asumi-chan is Interested in Lesbian Brothels! (Asumi-chan wa Les Fuuzoku ni Kyoumi ga Arimasu!) is from Comic Yuri Hime, and is about a girl searching for her childhood friend… in said brothels.

ASH: Well then!

SEAN: There’s also I’m the Evil Lord of an Intergalactic Empire! (OreAku, Ore wa Seikan Kokka no Akutoku Ryoushu!), the manga adaptation of the light novel SS already releases. It runs in Comic Gardo.

On the danmei side we get Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation: Mo Dao Zu Shi 4.

ASH: Yay! This one’s still my favorite from the author.

SEAN: For manga: 7th Time Loop: The Villainess Enjoys a Carefree Life Married to Her Worst Enemy! 2, CANDY AND CIGARETTES 2, Dungeon People 2, Kemono Jihen 3, Killing Stalking: Deluxe Edition 2, The Kingdoms of Ruin 5, Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid: Elma’s Office Lady Diary 6, The Summer You Were There 2, Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out! 8, Wonder Cat Kyuu-chan 7, and Yakuza Reincarnation 4.

MICHELLE: I look forward to reading more Kemono Jihen.

SEAN: Square Enix has YoRHa: Pearl Harbor Descent Record – A NieR:Automata Story (YoRHa: Shinjuwan Kouka Sakusen Kiroku), which should speak for itself. It runs in Manga Up!.

SuBLime debuts Midnight Rain, a one-shot BL title from b-Boy P!. Two men struggling with life find each other.

MICHELLE: This sounds like my sort of BL.

ASH: I do enjoy this particular sort, too.

SEAN: And there’s also Coyote 4.

Viz Media gives us Call of the Night 10, Komi Can’t Communicate 22, Orochi: The Perfect Edition 3, Pokémon: Sword & Shield 5, and Sakamoto Days 5.

ASH: Still glad to see Orochi being released, even if I still need to read the volumes I already have.

SEAN: Yen On has two debuts. Even If This Love Disappears Tonight (Kon’ya, Sekai kara Kono Koi ga Kiete mo) is another in the “one-shot depressing teenage romance” books.

ASH: There are a few of those, to be sure.

ANNA: Not sure if I’m in the mood for that right now.

SEAN: The Princess of Convenient Plot Devices (Watashi wa Gotsugou Shugi na Kaiketsu Tantou no Oujo de aru) has a BL lover reincarnated into a world where her brother is in a romance with another man. But this means no heirs, so it’s a political marriage for her. Can she find true love despite this?

ASH: That’s a pretty great title if nothing else.

SEAN: Also from Yen On: Another 2001 (the third in the Another series), The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy 7, The Hero Laughs While Walking the Path of Vengeance a Second Time 4, High School Prodigies Have It Easy Even in Another World! 7, In the Land of Leadale 7, The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady 3, Orc Eroica 3, Rascal Does Not Dream of a Knapsack Kid (the 9th in the series), Reign of the Seven Spellblades 7, Solo Leveling 6, and The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess 3.

Yen Press has a new omnibus edition of K-On!. This collects the four main books in the series (but not the college book).

ASH: That takes me back!

SEAN: There’s also Konosuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World! Memorial Fan Book, a guide to the series.

And Puella Magi Oriko Magica: The Complete Omnibus Edition, which is what it says.

Shy is a new shonen series from Weekly Shonen Champion. A young girl named Shy is the superhero who’s there to protect Japan. Unfortunately, shy is also her personality.

Yen Press also has Bungo Stray Dogs: Another Story 2, The Fiancee Chosen by the Ring 3, For the Kid I Saw in My Dreams 9, From the Red Fog 3, Fruits Basket Another 4 (the final volume), Heterogenia Linguistico 4, I Cannot Reach You 5, Interspecies Reviewers 7, Kakegurui Twin 12, Konosuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World! 14, Kowloon Generic Romance 2, Let This Grieving Soul Retire! 4, Love and Heart 6, Love at Fourteen 12 (the final volume), Lust Geass 6, The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady 3, Mint Chocolate 6, Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World 4, Phantom Tales of the Night 10, Plunderer 10 (the final volume? The omnibuses make it unclear), Run on Your New Legs 3, The Splendid Work of a Monster Maid 4, Tales of the Kingdom 2, Teasing Master Takagi-san 16, A Terrified Teacher at Ghoul School 12, Val x Love 13, and Your Turn to Die: Majority Vote Death Game 3.

MICHELLE: Huh. I thought Fruits Basket Another was already over!

ASH: Wow, that’s a lot from Yen!

SEAN: Any presents among these volumes?

Manga the Week of 12/7/22

SEAN: It’s the most wonderful time of the year! What manga is giving us good cheer?

We start with Viz Media. Rainbow Days (Nijiiro Days) is a new Shojo Beat title from Betsuma. The timing on this seems off, as the anime aired in 2016. And it’s a 16-volume series, so get ready to invest. It’s about four boys, all with different ideas about romance.

MICHELLE: Huh. Somehow this one had totally escaped my notice.

ASH: I’d missed it, too!

SEAN: Also from Viz: Black Clover 31, Dragon Ball Super 17, Ghost Reaper Girl 3, Ima Koi: Now I’m in Love 4, Kaguya-sama: Love Is War 24, One Piece 101, and Snow White with the Red Hair 22.

ASH: I really ought to catch up with Snow White with the Red Hair.

SEAN: Tokyopop debuts Love Circus, a single volume BL title from Canna. A man who has tried to help a sex worker, and only ended up in debt, tries to kill himself… and wakes up at a sex establishment that caters to gay men.

Tokyopop also has the 2nd manga of Formerly, the Fallen Daughter of the Duke.

(Yes, yes. They were bumped.)

Titan debuts Kamen Rider Kuuga, a new manga updating the classic title to the 21st century. It runs in Shogakukan’s HEROS.

ASH: Titan doesn’t license that many manga, so it’s interesting what’s released.

SEAN: Steamship has a 2nd volume of GAME: Between the Suits.

Seven Seas got its books back from the printers again. Our Torsos Align: Human x Monster Love (Toruso no Bokura) is from Libre’s Kurofune Zero, which seems to be its “shoujo but not quite BL” magazine. These are romance stories starring “monsters” – birdmen, mermaids, aliens, etc.

ASH: Seems to be a burgeoning sub-genre these days.

SEAN: Thunderbolt Fantasy is an omnibus of Vol. 1-2, and originally ran in Weekly Morning. Based on a wuxia show, it features a woman trying to protect a sword from evil men, and the strangers who help her.

ASH: The show was fantastic. I’m looking forward to giving the manga a try.

SEAN: Yakuza Fiancé: Raise wa Tanin ga Ii runs in Afternoon. A yakuza daughter with a resting bitch face is married off to a rival leader’s son to preserve the peace… but his son is a sadist! Now she has to give as good as she gets.

Also from Seven Seas: Arifureta: From Commonplace to World’s Strongest 9, The Case Files of Jeweler Richard 4, Citrus+ 4, The Dangers in My Heart 5, Hello, Melancholic! 3 (the final volume), His Majesty the Demon King’s Housekeeper 2, I’m a Wolf, but My Boss is a Sheep! 2, Reborn as a Space Mercenary: I Woke Up Piloting the Strongest Starship! 4, Seaside Stranger 5, and SPRIGGAN: Deluxe Edition 2.

MICHELLE: Looking forward to more Hello, Melancholic!.

SEAN: One Peace has the 6th volume of Higehiro: After Being Rejected, I Shaved and Took in a High School Runaway.

Kodansha’s calendar is still broken, so let’s go hunting. In print, the debut is Studio Ghibli: The Complete Works, an artbook/reference book that looks at all 26 of the studio’s films.

ASH: Oh! That should be nice.

SEAN: In addition, we see The Quintessential Quintuplets Part 2 Box Set (which has Vols. 8-14, the rest of the series), The Seven Deadly Sins Omnibus 7, Vampire Dormitory 8, and Whisper Me a Love Song 6.

Kodansha has a digital debut. The Shape-Shifting Witch’s Kiss (Toshi to Mahou wa Kiss Shidai) is a shonen title from Magazine Pocket, and involves a boy who seems to have been taken straight from Kubo Won’t Let Me Be Invisible, a witch, and daily kisses.

We also see The Abandoned Reincarnation Sage 8 (the final volume), Changes of Heart 8, Chihayafuru 35, The God-Tier Guardian and the Love of Six Princesses 4, Kounodori: Dr. Stork 30, Matcha Made in Heaven 2, My Master Has No Tail 8, and Raised by the Demon Kings! 3.

MICHELLE: I will never not be glad to see Chihayafuru continuing to plug along.

SEAN: Kaiten Books has a print edition of the 6th Loner Life in Another World manga.

J-Novel Club Has three debuts, including one title that they just announced last week! BLADE & BASTARD: Warm ash, Dusky dungeon is based on the Wizardry RPG game, is by the writer of Goblin Slayer, is by the illustrator of Overlord, and is coming out the same day as the Japanese release. Impressive!

ASH: That’s a quick turnaround!

SEAN: An Introvert’s Hookup Hiccups: This Gyaru Is Head Over Heels for Me! (Inkya no Boku ni Batsu Game ni Kokuhaku Shitekita Hazu no Gyaru ga, Doumitemo Boku ni Betahore Desu) is another in the “super sweet love story” genre.

Peddler in Another World: I Can Go Back to My World Whenever I Want! (Itsudemo Jitaku ni Kaereru Ore wa, Isekai de Gyoushounin wo Hajimemashita) is another in the “slow life by selling Japanese things in isekai land” genre.

We also see Der Werwolf: The Annals of Veight -Origins- 8, My Daughter Left the Nest and Returned an S-Rank Adventurer 6, Record of Wortenia War 17, Reincarnated as the Piggy Duke: This Time I’m Gonna Tell Her How I Feel! 8, and the 9th manga volume for The Unwanted Undead Adventurer.

From HarperVia comes The Tatami Galaxy, possibly the most famous of Tomihiko Morimi’s novels, and now finally available in English! Starring a loser college student (I know, in a Morimi novel, contain your shock), it’s actually about parallel universes.

ASH: I’ve been waiting for this one.

SEAN: Ghost Ship has DARLING in the FRANXX 7-8 (the final volume) and SUPER HXEROS 9.

Floating World Comics gives us Boat Life (Fune ni Sumu), a loose autobiography from the creator of Trash Market and Slum Wolf. This series screams “READ MEEEEEE!” to Ash.

ASH: Sean, you know me so well! This is absolutely on my to-read list.

SEAN: From Denpa Books we see Guyabano Holiday, the new travelogue title by the author of Invitation from a Crab.

ASH: It feels like it’s been a long time coming; glad to see it finally released!

SEAN: They also have Inside Mari 9 (the final volume) and Vampeerz 2.

Airship, in print, debuts Free Life Fantasy Online: Immortal Princess. We discussed this when the digital came out. ZOMBIE GAMER.

Also in print: 7th Time Loop: The Villainess Enjoys a Carefree Life Married to Her Worst Enemy! 2, The Case Files of Jeweler Richard 2, The Saint’s Magic Power is Omnipotent 7, Trapped in a Dating Sim: The World of Otome Games is Tough for Mobs 7, and Vivy Prototype 2.

Happy manga holidays! There’s at least two more festive Manga the Week ofs coming.

Manga the Week of 11/30/22

November 26, 2022 by Sean Gaffney, Michelle Smith and Ash Brown Leave a Comment

SEAN: Thanksgiving is over, you can’t move, come read some manga instead.

ASH: That’s a good response to many a different situation.

SEAN: Airship has a couple of ongoing print series. Disciple of the Lich: Or How I Was Cursed by the Gods and Dropped Into the Abyss! 4 and Irina: The Vampire Cosmonaut 2.

And in early digital we see A Tale of the Secret Saint 4 and The World’s Fastest Level Up 2.

A double dose of Cross Infinite World gives us Apocalypse Bringer Mynoghra: World Conquest Starts with the Civilization of Ruin 4 and So You Want to Live the Slow Life? A Guide to Life in the Beastly Wilds 2.

Ghost Ship has Creature Girls: A Hands-On Field Journal in Another World 6 and Peter Grill and the Philosopher’s Time 9.

J-Novel Club has some debuts. The Mythical Hero’s Otherworld Chronicles (Shinwa Densetsu no Eiyū Isekai Tan) is a long series from Overlap, 13 volumes. A legendary hero wants nothing more than to be reincarnated into the peaceful life that he fought so hard to earn. Sadly, he’s reincarnated a thousand years later, and the peace is almost shattered! Can he get his warrior mojo back?

On a sillier note, Reincarnated as an Apple: This Forbidden Fruit Is Forever Unblemished! (Ringo Tensei: Kindan no Kajitsu wa Kyō mo Korokoro to Musō Suru) features a guy who dies when he’s hit by a truck full of apples. But he gets to reincarnate with 4 great OP cheats! … and one curse. You can guess the curse.

MICHELLE: Huh. Well, that’s different, I guess.

ASH: Different enough that it caught my attention, too.

SEAN: Also from J-Novel Club: Ascendance of a Bookworm 22 (which begins the books’ final arc), Cooking with Wild Game 19, the 4th Demon Lord, Retry! manga, The Great Cleric 10, Gushing Over Magical Girls 4, the 2nd Isekai Tensei: Recruited to Another World manga, The Magician Who Rose from Failure 5, My Instant Death Ability Is So Overpowered, No One in This Other World Stands a Chance Against Me! 12, and My Instant Death Ability Is So Overpowered, No One in This Other World Stands a Chance Against Me! —AΩ— 6 (the manga).

ASH: I’m a bit behind in my reading of Ascendance of a Bookworn, but I’ve enjoyed what I’ve read so far.

SEAN: Kaiten Books has The Yakuza’s Guide to Babysitting 4 in print.

Kodansha’s site, per their Anime NYC panel, may be broken for some time, so we continue to try to guess.

MICHELLE: Poor Sean.

SEAN: In print, the first debut is In the Clear Moonlit Dusk (Uruwashi no Yoi no Tsuki), a shoujo title from Dessert. The plot reminds me a LOT of I Hate You More Than Anyone!, and so therefore I am intrigued.

MICHELLE: Me, too! I meant to read this when it came out digitally, so now is a good time to jump on board.

ASH: Oh! I am likewise intrigued.

SEAN: We also see the debut of NOiSE, the prequel to BLAME!, which means we’re back in Tsutomu Nihei territory. This is a Tokyopop license rescue, and is complete in one volume.

MICHELLE: I own the TOKYOPOP version, but I do love BLAME!.

ASH: I really dig Nihei’s artwork.

SEAN: This is a big one: Parasyte Full Color Collection. The original “what the actual F?” manga is back, and in full color. Each volume is 300 pages, and it’s a hardcover.

ASH: I adore Parasyte, but I’ll admit I wasn’t overly impressed by the samples of the color work I saw. Hardcover appeals, though.

SEAN: Wistoria: Wand and Sword (Tsue to Tsurugi no Wistoria) is from Bessatsu Shonen Magazine, and its writer is better known for Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?. A guy enters a magical academy… but can’t use magic! It’s OK. He has a sword.

We’re also starting an omnibus edition of Fire Force, with the first 3 volumes.

Also in print: UQ Holder! 27 is already out, as I missed it. Witch Hat Atelier 10 is already out, as I missed it. And there’s Attack on Titan: Colossal Edition 7, Blue Period 11, Drifting Dragons 11, I Was Reincarnated as the 7th Prince so I Can Take My Time Perfecting My Magical Ability 2, Peach Boy Riverside 9, Phantom of the Idol 3, Rent-a-Girlfriend 15, and The Seven Deadly Sins Omnibus 6.

ASH: Just picked up my copy of Witch Hat Atelier 10!

SEAN: We don’t have to guess the digital debut, as they told us at the panel. The Food Diary of Miss Maid (Maid-san wa Taberu Dake) is a Comic Days series about a Japanese maid in an English manor who is now back in Japan… but it’s really a foodie sort of title.

ASH: I do like foodie manga.

SEAN: Other digital titles include The Decagon House Murders 5 (the final volume), Desert Eagle 5 (the final volume), I’ll Be with Them Again Today 4 (the final volume), It’s That Reincarnated-as-a-Virus Story 3, My Wonderful World 5 (the final volume), Oh, Those Hanazono Twins 7 (the final volume), Our Bodies, Entwining, Entwined 4, Our Fake Marriage: Rosé 2, Yozakura Quartet 29, and Zatsuki: Make Me a Star 3 (the final volume). So many final volumes!

MICHELLE: Indeed! After being burned so many times by unfinished series, I always feel some satisfaction when we actually get the final volume of something, even if I’m bummed it’s over. (Seven Seas, please rescue Silver Diamond!)

SEAN: Seven Seas debuts I Get the Feeling That Nobukuni-san Likes Me (Tonari no Nobukuni-san wa Ore no Koto ga Suki na Ki ga Suru), a seinen title from Young Animal, about a high school girl who’s fallen in love but has no idea what to do next. Can a mascot character help her?

Also from Seven Seas: Classmates 6 (which has the “Blanc” stories) and Skip and Loafer 6.

MICHELLE: I really do want to read these!

ASH: Same!

SEAN: Square Enix Manga has SINoALICE 2 and Soul Eater: The Perfect Edition 9.

Tokyopop debuts Love Circus, a single volume BL title from Canna. A man who has tried to help a sex worker, and only ended up in debt, tries to kill himself… and wakes up at a sex establishment that caters to gay men.

Tokyopop also has the 2nd manga of Formerly, the Fallen Daughter of the Duke.

And that’s it! Yep, 5th week of the month, so no Viz, no Yen. What’s your turkey coma manga?

SEAN: The deluge.

ASH: Ride the wave!

SEAN: Yen On has some debuts. Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian (Tokidoki Bosotto Roshiago de Dereru Tonari no Alya-san) is basically one of those “sweet high school romcom” series, only with a Russian flavor. Sadly, she doesn’t realize the guy she likes can understand Russian!

ASH: That’s a twist on communication breakdown that I don’t think I’ve seen yet.

SEAN: Apparently, Disillusioned Adventurers Will Save the World (Ningen Fushin no Bōkensha-tachi ga Sekai o Sukuu Yō Desu) tells the tale of an adventurer who was screwed by his party. Now he joins forces with others who had similar issues and together they will be the bitterest adventurers around.

The one-shot is Fox Tales (Kitsune no Hanashi), a short story collection from the creator of Penguin Highway and The Night Is Short, Walk On Girl.

ASH: I’ve really enjoyed Tomihiko Morimi’s past work, so I look forward to reading this one.

SEAN: Gods’ Games We Play (Kami wa Game ni Ueteiru) has a former goddess and a genius boy teaming up to win a rigged contest between gods! This is from the creator of Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World.

And King’s Proposal (Ōsama no Propose) is from the creator of Date a Live, but I guess I’ll talk about it anyway. A dying witch who is the only one with the power to save the world gives her powers to a passing Ordinary High School Student. Now he’ll need to attend a magic academy… posing as her!

Also from Yen On: The Asterisk War 16, Cross-Dressing Villainess Cecilia Sylvie 3, Eighty-Six 11, Higehiro: After Being Rejected, I Shaved and Took in a High School Runaway 2, The Holy Grail of Eris 3, I Kept Pressing the 100-Million-Year Button and Came Out on Top 4, My Happy Marriage 3, Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World 10, Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- 20, Secrets of the Silent Witch 2, So I’m a Spider, So What? 15, Spice & Wolf 23, Strike the Blood 22 (the final volume), Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online 11, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime 15, and The World’s Finest Assassin Gets Reincarnated in Another World as an Aristocrat 6.

ASH: It’s been a while since I’ve thought about Spice & Wolf. I did enjoy some of the early volumes I read.

SEAN: As for Yen Press, they have debuts as well. Coffee Moon is from Dengeki Maoh, and is about a girl trying to live a normal life during what appears to be the apocalypse, and what happens when one day she cannot.

ASH: Okay, I’m at least vaguely intrigued.

SEAN: The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy (Seiken Gakuin no Maken Tsukai) is based on the light novel, which is not too bad for a “magical academy has a demon lord” book. (Yes, that is a genre.) It runs in Shonen Ace.

Embrace Your Size: My Own Body Positivity (Jibun Size de Ikou Watashi nari no Body Positive) is a one-shot serialized on pixiv’s essay site, and then published by Kadokawa. It is, as you might imagine, a story of how society does not accept anything other than the “accepted” body type, and how to learn to love your body anyway.

ASH: I do like the range of autobio manga we see these days.

SEAN: The Gay Who Turned Kaiju (Kaijuu ni Natta Gay) is a one-shot LGBTQ title that was originally published as a series of ten doujinshi, then collected into a volume by Enterbrain. A bullied gay teen wishes he could be someone else. Surprise! That said, this is apparently really good.

ASH: I’ve heard good things, too.

Hirano and Kagiura is a sequel/side-story to Sasaki and Miyano, and is BL Basketball. BasketBL? It runs in Comic Gene.

MICHELLE: I should really read Sasaki and Miyano.

SEAN: So What’s Wrong with Getting Reborn as a Goblin? (Tensei Goblin Dakedo Shitsumon Aru?) comes from the author of My Unique Skill Makes Me OP Even at Level 1. Reborn as hated thing, weak to strong, exhausted office worker dies by getting truck’d, harem of devoted women… it’s all here. This runs in Tonari no Young Jump.

Touring After the Apocalypse (Shuumatsu Touring) runs in Dengeki Maoh, like Coffee Moon, and also appears to be post-apocalyptic, like Coffee Moon. That said, the plot sounds exactly like Girls’ Last Tour: the non-SF version. Also, its author just started a Super Cub manga spinoff starring Reiko. HINT HINT.

ASH: Hmmm…

SEAN: Yen also has Adachi and Shimamura 4, Bofuri: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense 5, Breasts Are My Favorite Things in the World! 6, Catch These Hands! 3, A Certain Magical Index 26, The Dark History of the Reincarnated Villainess 6, The Devil Is a Part-Timer! 19, The Girl I Saved on the Train Turned Out to Be My Childhood Friend 2, Goblin Slayer Side Story: Year One 8, Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story 5, The Maid I Hired Recently Is Mysterious 4, Mieruko-chan 6, Murcielago 20, Overlord 16, Shadows House 2, Slasher Maidens 6, and Why Raeliana Ended Up at the Duke’s Mansion 2.

That’s it! What will you be… buying… wait. That’s only Yen Press. I’ve only done ONE publisher. (sobs)

Viz Media, fortunately, doesn’t have a lot. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Part 5–Golden Wind 6, the light novel Naruto: Sasuke’s Story—The Uchiha and the Heavenly Stardust, Urusei Yatsura 16, and (digitally) WITCH WATCH 4.

ASH: Still glad we’re getting so much of JoJo translated.

SEAN: Square Enix has Beauty and the Feast 5, The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated! 4, I Think Our Son Is Gay 4, Ragna Crimson 7, and The Strongest Sage with the Weakest Crest 9.

ASH: I need to catch up on I Think Our Son Is Gay, but I really like the first volume.

SEAN: Seven Seas has some debuts as well, of course. Steam Reverie in Amber is not a manga or light novel, it’s an artbook/tarot thing from an artist famous for Final Fantasy art.

ASH: Interesting.

You Like Me, Not My Daughter?! (Musume Janakute, Watashi ga Suki Nano!?) is a “momcom” from the creator of When Supernatural Battles Become Commonplace and You Like Me, Don’t You? (and takes place in the same universe as the latter). A young woman raises her niece as her own daughter after the death of her sister and brother-in-law. Then one day, a confession from the guy next door… Not to her daughter, but to her!

Also from Seven Seas: COLORLESS 2, Crossplay Love: Otaku x Punk 2, Dungeon Builder: The Demon King’s Labyrinth is a Modern City! 6, The Ideal Sponger Life 12, Tokyo Revengers Omnibus 5-6, and Young Ladies Don’t Play Fighting Games 4.

One Peace Books has the debut of The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic’s manga (Chiyu Mahou no Machigatta Tsukaikata – Senjou o Kakeru Kaifuku Youin). Based on the light novel (also from One Peace), it runs in Comp Ace.

KUMA debuts The (Pet) Detective Agency (Tantei Jimusho no Kainushi-sama) is a one-shot BL hardcover volume about a detective who is skilled at finding lost pets, and the boss he’s in love with. It ran in Canna.

MICHELLE: Huh. Potentially cute.

ANNA: It does sound cute.

SEAN: Kodansha’s site being under construction and its solicits being hard to find means that the information is, frankly, a mess. I can only apologize.

Kodansha’s print volumes: The Best of Attack on Titan In Color 2 and When Will Ayumu Make His Move? 8.

A print volume I missed from 11/8 is Avant-Garde Yumeko, another Shuzo Oshimi title which is, and there’s no getting around this, about a girl who likes penises. It ran in Young Magazine in 2003.

ASH: Oh, well, it’ll probably be well drawn at the very least?

SEAN: Digital… their site is still down. But let’s try going by solicits. Blackguard 5 (the final volume), Burn the House Down 6, DAYS 32, Gamaran: Shura 2, WIND BREAKER 7, and You’re My Cutie 4.

Books that are already out from 11/8: Ace of the Diamond 40, The Fable 8, My Maid, Miss Kishi 5, Police in a Pod 18, The Shadows of Who We Once Were 6, and Space Brothers 41.

Books that are already out from 11/15: Blue Lock 16, Boss Wife 5, The Café Terrace and its Goddesses 2, Gamaran 3, Golden Gold 6, Hozuki’s Coolheadedness 11, Otherworldly Munchkin: Let’s Speedrun the Dungeon with Only 1 HP! 6, Our Fake Marriage 10, A Serenade for Pretend Lovers 6 (the final volume), The Seven Deadly Sins: Four Knights of the Apocalypse 6, She, Her Camera, and Her Seasons 4, Tesla Note 7, and Ya Boy Kongming! 9.

MICHELLE: I am, as ever, here for all the josei and sports manga!

ANNA: So am I, theoretically!

SEAN: J-Novel Club light novel debut: Making Magic: The Sweet Life of a Witch Who Knows an Infinite MP Loophole (Maryoku Cheat na Majo ni Narimashita ~ Souzou Mahou de Kimama na Isekai Seikatsu ~). This is a reincarnated in a fantasy world that’s like a game but has a cheat ability sort of book. Despite that, female protagonist, so I’ll try it.

Also from J-Novel Club: Ascendance of a Bookworm: Fanbook 3, Dahlia in Bloom: Crafting a Fresh Start with Magical Tools 5, Holmes of Kyoto 12, the 15th Marginal Operation manga, Perry Rhodan NEO 10, and Redefining the META at VRMMO Academy 5.

Not technically Ghost Ship but I’m putting it here because it’s explicit, The Titan’s Bride (Kyojinzoku no Hanayome) is a mature BL title which features a high school man who finds himself in a fantasy world of giants! And yes, EVERYTHING about them is giant! And one wants our hero as his… bride?

ASH: I’ll admit to being curious.

SEAN: Actual Ghost Ship: The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, REALLY Love You 4, Call Girl in Another World 5 and Ero Ninja Scrolls 4.

It’s not just Kodansha I find hard to find. Dark Horse Comics released Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! 4 on 11/8 and I missed it.

Finally (!!), Airship has, in print, Classroom of the Elite Year 2 3 and Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear 11.5.

And in early digital they have Drugstore in Another World: The Slow Life of a Cheat Pharmacist 6.

(collapses)

MICHELLE: Sean? Sean?!?!

Manga the Week of 11/16/22

November 11, 2022 by Sean Gaffney, Michelle Smith, Anna N, Ash Brown and MJ Leave a Comment

SEAN: It’s the week of Anime NYC, so I think a lot of publishers are preparing for the con instead.

ASH: That’s fair.

SEAN: Airship starts us off with print volumes for I Swear I Won’t Bother You Again! 2 and I’m the Evil Lord of an Intergalactic Empire! 3.

And we get early digital for Accomplishments of the Duke’s Daughter 7, aka Accomplishments of the Duke’s Wife 2.

Ghost Ship has the 5th volume of Do You Like Big Girls?.

J-Novel Club has a few titles. Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill 12 (which is now caught up with Japan), Death’s Daughter and the Ebony Blade 2, Did I Seriously Just Get Reincarnated as My Gag Character?! 2 (the final volume), Formerly, the Fallen Daughter of the Duke 2, Infinite Dendrogram’s 10th manga volume, Magic Knight of the Old Ways 4, Oversummoned, Overpowered, and Over It! 2 (also a final volume), and Rebuild World Volume 1 Part 2.

ASH: That is a few!

SEAN: Kodansha has a print debut, As a Reincarnated Aristocrat, I’ll Use My Appraisal Skill to Rise in the World (Tensei Kizoku Kantei Sukiru de Nariagaru – Jakushou Ryouchi o Uketsuidanode, Yuushuuna Jinzai o Fuyashite Itara, Saikyou Ryouchi ni Natteta). You can probably guess what it’s about from the title, as always. It runs in Magazine Pocket.

Also from Kodansha: An Older Guy’s First VR Love (VR Ojisan no Hatsukoi). This one-volume title from Zero-Sum Online is apparently BL and yuri, probably as it’s a “guy in real life, girl in game” series. It’s also a tragedy.

MICHELLE: Huh.

ASH: Hmmm.

MJ: Well.

SEAN: Hell in a Bottle: Maiden’s Bookshelf is a new series that takes classic short stories and gives them artbook art. This one features the 1928 story Hell in a Bottle by Kyusaku Yumeno.

ASH: I didn’t realize this was going to be a series, but I’m absolutely here for it!

MJ: …for a split second, I read this as “Hell in a Bottle: Manga Bookshelf,” and I worried about what I’ve been missing.

SEAN: And Kodansha’s light novel line debuts with The Dawn of the Witch, the sequel to the very popular (and unlicensed) Grimoire of Zero series. Why not license that, you may ask? Because Grimoire of Zero is a Dengeki Bunko series. In any case, this is theoretically readable without prior knowledge of the first series. A young man with amnesia is recruited by the traditional blonde-haired, immortal girl who nevertheless looks 10 years old.

Also in print, Attack on Titan Omnibus 7, Eden’s Zero 19, Fire Force 29, and Rent-A-(Really-Shy!)-Girlfriend 3.

We don’t know digital titles for next week… or this week. But Kodansha finally announced titles they already released LAST week. We got The Abandoned Reincarnation Sage 7, The God-Tier Guardian and the Love of Six Princesses 3, Kounodori: Dr. Stork 29, and Tying the Knot with an Amagami Sister 5. Kodansha’s main site is still under maintenance.

KUMA has a revised and expanded version of Canis: Dear Mr. Rain.

ASH: Interesting.

SEAN: One Peace Books gives us Hinamatsuri 17.

Seven Seas has a new novel debut in its danmei line: The Husky and His White Cat Shizun: Erha He Ta De Bai Mao Shizun. AKA 2ha. The plot is basically a revenge fantasy with a dollop of “traveling back to my younger self to change the past”, but the BL stops our protagonist in his tracks.

MICHELLE: I’ve heard good things about this. And smutty things.

ANNA: I mean, I think that BL would often stop protagonists in their tracks.

ASH: I’ve been looking forward to giving thus series a try.

MJ: I mean, hasn’t the BL stopped all of us in our tracks at some point or another?

SEAN: The other debut is Futari Escape, a Comic Yuri Hime series about an adult couple trying to avoid responsibilities any way they can. I still am not tired of yuri couples who aren’t in school.

ASH: Neither am I!

SEAN: Also from Seven Seas: Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor 15, Arifureta: From Commonplace to World’s Strongest ZERO 7, The Dungeon of Black Company 8, Even Though We’re Adults 5, Failed Princesses 6 (the final volume), The Tale of the Outcasts 6, This Is Screwed Up, but I Was Reincarnated as a GIRL in Another World! 4, Trapped in a Dating Sim: The World of Otome Games is Tough for Mobs 6, and The Weakest Tamer Began a Journey to Pick Up Trash 2.

MICHELLE: I really need to read Even Though We’re Adults.

ASH: I’ve been collecting the series, but haven’t actually read it yet…

SEAN: Square Enix gives us By the Grace of the Gods 6.

Lastly, Viz Media has Asadora! 6, BEASTARS 21, Mashle: Magic and Muscles 9, Requiem of the Rose King 16, Rooster Fighter 2, and Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead 8.

MICHELLE: Ooh, more Rose King.

ANNA: Yay for angst!

ASH: Always!

MJ: All of the above!

SEAN: Told you it was a short week. Don’t worry, we’ll make up for it the week after next.

Manga the Week of 11/9/22

November 4, 2022 by Sean Gaffney 2 Comments

SEAN: It’s November, and witty line goes here!.

Yen On is pushing out a lot of new light novels. We get Banished from the Hero’s Party, I Decided to Live a Quiet Life in the Countryside 7, The Bride of Demise 2, High School DxD 9, I’m the Villainess, So I’m Taming the Final Boss 4, The Otherworlder, Exploring the Dungeon 3, Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- Ex 5, and Torture Princess: Fremd Torturchen 9 (the final volume).

From Viz Media, we see Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai 5, Fly Me to the Moon 14, Kaiu Shirai x Posuka Demizu: Beyond The Promised Neverland (a short story collection set before and after the main series), Mao 8, Pokémon Journeys 4 (the final volume), Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle 19, and World Trigger 24.

ASH: I fell behind with The Promised Neverland long ago, but I do like these sorts of short story collections.

MICHELLE: I still need to finish it, myself.

SEAN: Tokyopop gives us the 4th and final volume of Mame Coordinate.

Already out from Tentai Books is the 2nd volume of light novel You Like Me, Don’t You?.

SuBLime has the 2nd and final volume of Love Nest, as well as the 7th volume of Punch Up!.

ASH: I may have said this last time, too, but I forgot that Punch Up! was an ongoing series. I have enjoyed what I’ve read, though.

SEAN: Steamship gives us a 2nd volume of I’ll Never Be Your Crown Princess!.

Square Enix Manga debuts Tokyo Aliens, a GFantasy series about a young man trying to follow in the footsteps of his police officer father, and the aliens who derail that when they kidnap him.

ASH: That’s the sort of ridiculous premise I like to see.

ANNA: I almost wish it had one additional layer of ridiculousness, but alien kidnapping does sound like something new at least.

SEAN: They also have the 6th manga volume of Suppose a Kid from the Last Dungeon Boonies Moved to a Starter Town.

Seven Seas debuts the manga version of Though I Am an Inept Villainess: Tale of the Butterfly-Rat Body Swap in the Maiden Court (Futsutsuka na Akujo dewa Gozaimasu ga: Suuguu Chouso Torikae Den), which runs in Comic Zero-Sum. What’s that, you say? I’ve shilled for this series before? AND I WILL AGAIN!

Also from Seven Seas: Free Life Fantasy Online: Immortal Princess 2, I Can’t Believe I Slept With You! 3 (the final volume), Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid: Kanna’s Daily Life 10, The Most Notorious “Talker” Runs the World’s Greatest Clan 3, My Next Life as a Villainess Side Story: On the Verge of Doom! 3 (the final volume), My [Repair] Skill Became a Versatile Cheat, So I Think I’ll Open a Weapon Shop 2, Namekawa-san Won’t Take a Licking! 2, and Tamamo-chan’s a Fox! 6 (the final volume).

One Peace Books has the 7th volume of Farming Life in Another World.

Kodansha’s site is currently empty, but retailers tell me they have some print next week. The debut is Go! Go! Loser Ranger! (Sentai Daishikkaku), a Weekly Shonen Magazine title that’s a sentai series, with all the sentai things you’d expect coming with it.

ASH: Those can sometimes be a lot of fun.

SEAN: And for readers who really really hate themselves, there’s Rent-A-Girlfriend Manga Box Set 1, which has Vol. 1-6.

Also in print: Blue Period 10, those two Love and Lies endings that got bumped from 10/26, Orient 11, Sayonara Football 13, The Seven Deadly Sins: Four Knights of the Apocalypse 5, Shaman King Omnibus 11, and Something’s Wrong with Us 11.

The new digital debut (the only digital release we know about) is Matcha Made in Heaven (Kono Koi, Chaban ni Tsuki!?), a josei series from Be Love. A young woman breaks off her engagement and returns home to her family’s tea farm (hence the pun in the title)… only to find another guy and a little girl living there? And now she’s pretending to be his wife?

MICHELLE: it sounds potentially cute. I could go for some wholesome josei.

ANNA: Me too!

ASH: Same. And I love a good pun.

SEAN: J-Novel Club has a manga spinoff debuting: Campfire Cooking in Another World: Sui’s Great Adventure (Tondemo Skill de Isekai Hōrō Meshi: Sui no Daibōken). It runs in Comic Gardo, and stars Sui the Slime.

ASH: Does this count as a food manga?

SEAN: Also from J-Novel Club: How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom 17, Isekai Tensei: Recruited to Another World 2, and Monster Tamer 11.

Ghost Ship has a 4th volume of Might as Well Cheat: I Got Transported to Another World Where I Can Live My Wildest Dreams!.

Dark Horse Comics has the 12th Deluxe Edition of Berserk.

ASH: A copy of that will be coming home with me.

SEAN: And Airship, in print, has The Most Notorious “Talker” Runs the World’s Greatest Clan 3 (yes, the manga and light novel are coming out the same week, just to annoy me), Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation 19, and Survival in Another World with My Mistress! 3.

While digitally, we get 7th Time Loop: The Villainess Enjoys a Carefree Life Married to Her Worst Enemy! 2.

Insert joke here! What are you buying?

MICHELLE: Not much, apparently!

ANNA: Gonna save my pennies this week!

SEAN: Is it Halloween yet? Oh my God, it’s already past! You fools! You absolute fools!

ASH: The time! How it flies!

SEAN: We start with Airship’s print releases, as they’ve got Modern Villainess: It’s Not Easy Building a Corporate Empire Before the Crash 2, Reborn as a Space Mercenary: I Woke Up Piloting the Strongest Starship! 5, and Though I Am an Inept Villainess: Tale of the Butterfly-Rat Body Swap in the Maiden Court 2.

And we get an early digital release for Failure Frame: I Became the Strongest and Annihilated Everything With Low-Level Spells 6.

Cross Infinite World has a new light novel, The Strongest Knight is Actually a Cross-Dressing Noblewoman?! (Hyōgetsu no Kishi wa Dansō Reijō: Naze ka Dekiai Sarete Imasu). A young woman has to disguise herself as a man in order to become a knight… and possibly lead the way to an order of female knights!

ASH: Okay, that could be good.

ANNA: I enjoy cross dressing female knights!

SEAN: Dark Horse has the 41st volume of Berserk, the last one drawn by Kentaro Miura before his tragic death.

ASH: This series is a touchstone for me; Miura is missed by so many.

SEAN: Ghost Ship debuts Ayakashi Triangle, the series that broke the online manga apps. From the creator of To-Love-Ru, it is a “gender-bending romance”, but let’s face it, you know this author, it’s T&A and more T&A.

Also from Ghost Ship: I’m Not Meat 2, It’s Just Not My Night! – Tale of a Fallen Vampire Queen 2, and Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs 21.

Some print from J-Novel Club. We get Ascendance of a Bookworm 15 and An Archdemon’s Dilemma: How to Love Your Elf Bride 13.

ASH: Obligatory, “Yay, Bookworm!”

SEAN: Digitally we see the debut of the Rebuild World manga. J-Novel Club already put out the light novel version. This runs in Dengeki Maoh.

And we also get Doll-Kara 3, Full Clearing Another World under a Goddess with Zero Believers 5, Invaders of the Rokujouma!? 40, and Now I’m a Demon Lord! Happily Ever After with Monster Girls in My Dungeon 2.

Kaiten Books has a new digital release: The Bottom-Tier Baron’s Accidental Rise to the Top (Teihen Ryoushu no Kanchigai Eiyuutan). This Comic Gardo series honestly sounds like The Genius Prince’s Guide to Raising a Nation Out of Debt on hard mode.

Kodansha is offering the Complete Edition of No Longer Human that Usamaru Furuya did a while back. Definitely more for Furuya fans than Osamu Dazai fans, I’d say.

ASH: That’s a fair assessment. I’m really glad to see this coming back into print, though.

SEAN: And we also get a complete edition of The Ghost in the Shell. Minus that one page, y’know.

Also in print: Attack on Titan The Final Season Part 2 Box Set, which comes with a new ending that isn’t godawful (OK, I lie, it doesn’t), Don’t Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro 13, A Galaxy Next Door 3, The Iceblade Sorcerer Shall Rule the World 2, and Orient 10.

I don’t know what’s coming out digitally due to the way Kodansha updates its site after its end-of-month announcements. Sorry!

Another pile of Seven Seas debuts. Ex-Yakuza and Stray Kitten (Hiroware Koneko to Moto Yakuza) is from Mag Garden’s MAGxiv, and means we get another week in a row of adorable cat manga.

ASH: So many ex-yakuza and cat manga these days! It was only a matter of time before we’d get this particular combo.

SEAN: I’m a Terminal Cancer Patient, but I’m Fine (Mikkigan demo Genki desu 38-sai) is a biographical manga about, well, the artist’s life with colon cancer. It ran in Flex Comic’s Comic Polaris.

ASH: I do like that Seven Seas continues to release biographical manga.

SEAN: Let’s Buy the Land and Cultivate It in a Different World (Isekai de Tochi wo Katte Noujou wo Tsukurou) runs in Gentosha’s Comic Boost. Do you like Farming Life in Another World and wish there was a version with more mermaids? This is it.

Also from Seven Seas: The 4th and final volume of The Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System: Ren Zha Fanpai Zijiu Xitong, which has short stories set around the main action and after it. This also has a special edition and a Barnes and Noble special edition.

ASH: Oh!

SEAN: And there is The Demon Girl Next Door 6 and The Savior’s Book Café Story in Another World 4.

Viz Media debuts a new Shonen Jump manga, Blue Box (Ao no Hako). A guy on the boy’s badminton team falls for a girl on the girl’s basketball team. Can their love survive being a non-BL-tinged sports manga in Shonen Jump? Seriously, though, I’ve heard this is excellent.

MICHELLE: I am here for it.

ASH: Same!

ANNA: One of my kids really likes this.

MJ: I may miss the BL fanservice, but girl’s basketball more than makes up for it.

SEAN: We also see The Elusive Samurai 3, The King’s Beast 8, Kubo Won’t Let Me Be Invisible 4, Natsume’s Book of Friends 27, One-Punch Man 24, and Skip Beat! 47.

MICHELLE: Insert Skip Beat! squee here. I also look forward to getting caught up on Natsume.

ASH: Excellent series, both.

ANNA: Extra Yay! for Skip Beat!.

SEAN: Lastly, Yen Press has Thermae Romae: The Complete Omnibus (it apparently weighs almost 7 pounds) and The Detective Is Already Dead 3.

ASH: Thermae Romae provided me with such delight when it was first released; so glad to see it available again.

SEAN: Since you didn’t get any candy, what manga are you getting?

October 20, 2022 by Sean Gaffney, Michelle Smith, Ash Brown and Anna N Leave a Comment

SEAN: Is it Halloween yet? Still no.

Yen On has The Angel Next Door Spoilers Me Rotten 4 and Baccano! 20.

And Yen Press’s sole release is I’m a Behemoth, an S-Ranked Monster, but Mistaken for a Cat, I Live as an Elf Girl’s Pet 5.

Viz Media’s debut is a one-shot horror manga from Junji Ito, Black Paradox. It ran in Big Comic Spirits. Four suicidal people meet up and have strange things befall them.

MICHELLE: It is the perfect season for some Junji Ito!

ASH: That it is!

ANNA: Sounds quite spooky and depressing.

SEAN: Viz also has a light novel, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba — The Flower of Happiness. It actually looks to be a short story collection.

And we get a 7th volume of everyone’s favorite yuri trainwreck, How Do We Relationship?.

MICHELLE: I’m so far behind on this!

ASH: I am, too, but I’ve really enjoyed what I’ve read.

SEAN: Tokyopop has a 3rd volume of I Was Reincarnated as the Villainess in an Otome Game but the Boys Love Me Anyway!.

Steamship has the 2nd volume of Outbride: Beauty and the Beasts.

Square Enix Manga gives us A Man and His Cat 7.

MICHELLE: Also so far behind on this!

SEAN: Seven Seas wraps up its month of cat manga debuts with Yokai Cats (Neko Youkai). This Takeshobo series is from the creator of The Evil Secret Society of Cats, which debuted… erm, last week. The plot is the title.

ASH: Oh, more cats! And yokai, too? I should probably give it a try, then.

SEAN: Also from Seven Seas: The Ancient Magus’ Bride 16, MoMo -the blood taker- 2, the 5th and final volume of Necromance, Reincarnated as a Sword 9, Sakurai-san Wants to Be Noticed 2, and Servamp 17.

MICHELLE: It’s also the perfect season for The Ancient Magus’ Bride!

ASH: It’s true!

SEAN: One Peace Books has Multi-Mind Mayhem 5.

Kodansha has a print debut: Skygrazer (Getenrou). This one-shot ran in Kodansha’s Mephisto, and is from the creator of Heavenly Delusion. A detective is investigating a series of inter-linked cases (and indeed inter-linked short story chapters) at a weird apartment.

MICHELLE: This sounds like it could be my sort of thing!

ASH: Count me curious, too.

ANNA: All these things sound interesting.

SEAN: Also in print: Love and Lies 12, which comes in two variations: The Lilina Ending and The Misaki Ending. Is this a new trend in harem comedies to avoid fans sending death threats to the author? We Never Learn did it as well. At least Quintuplets made a choice.

ASH: Huh, that is a rather interesting trend.

SEAN: And also also in print: Shangri-La Frontier 2, Wandance 3, and Welcome to the Ballroom 11.

MICHELLE: I really enjoyed the first volume of Wandance. I read the first eight volumes of Welcome to the Ballroom, but after releases spread out exponentially, I sort of drifted away. Perhaps it’s time to return.

SEAN: Digitally, Kodansha gives us Burn the House Down 5, Koigakubo-kun Stole My First Time 3, Lightning and Romance 3, the 4th and final volume of My Tentative Name, My Wonderful World 4, the 3rd and final volume of Nighttime for Just Us Two, Oh, Those Hanazono Twins 6, and ONIMAI: I’m Now Your Sister! 6.

MICHELLE: Must read Burn the House Down and Nighttime for Just Us Two in the near future!

SEAN: From J-Novel Club we see the 4th Full Clearing Another World under a Goddess with Zero Believers manga volume, Min-Maxing My TRPG Build in Another World 4 Canto II, Private Tutor to the Duke’s Daughter 5, and Slayers 16.

Ghost Ship has a 3rd volume of The Witches of Adamas.

Denpa Books debuts Nana & Kaoru, a Young Animal title that will take you right back to the horny, horny days of your teenage years. This omnibus contains the first three volumes. The premise is basically “what if BDSM play made you a better person?”.

Also from Denpa: Heavenly Delusion 4. Which was actually last week, my bad. Denpa’s calendar can be hard to divine at times.

Lots of print debuts for Airship that we discussed when they got an early digital release. The one that isn’t is TITAN, a novel from the creator of Hello World. The premise is basically “what if the AI that controls the world needs therapy”?

ASH: This is most definitely within a subgenre I tend to read.

ANNA: What if we ALL need therapy?

SEAN: And we also see debuts in print for Vivy Prototype and The Weakest Tamer Began a Journey to Pick Up Trash.

As well as Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation 18, Loner Life in Another World 3, and The Strange Adventure of a Broke Mercenary 6.

Digitally, there’s Disciple of the Lich: Or How I Was Cursed by the Gods and Dropped Into the Abyss! 4 and The Saint’s Magic Power is Omnipotent 7.

No candy yet. Have some manga instead.

SEAN: Is it Halloween yet? No.

ASH: Just treats until then, right?

Airship has a print debut of one of my favorite 2022 light novels, Though I Am an Inept Villainess: Tale of the Butterfly-Rat Body Swap in the Maiden Court (Futsutsuka na Akujo de wa Gozaimasu ga – Sūgū Chōso Torikae Den). You may think “but I already read The Apothecary Diaries *and* Culinary Chronicles of the Court Flower, do I really need another of these?”. Yes. Yes, you do.

ASH: If those are comparable series, then that’s a solid recommendation.

SEAN: Digitally we see the early debut of Free Life Fantasy Online: Immortal Princess, whose manga Seven Seas has also released, so let me copy paste: A newbie gamer gets a new VR game from her younger sister… but her character build is horrible! Now she’s a zombie.

We also get the 2nd volume of Vivy Prototype.

Ghost Ship gives us a 4th volume of JK Haru is a Sex Worker in Another World.

J-Novel Club debuts Backstabbed in a Backwater Dungeon: My Trusted Companions Tried to Kill Me, But Thanks to the Gift of an Unlimited Gacha I Got LVL 9999 Friends and Am Out For Revenge on My Former Party Members and the World (Shinjiteita Nakama-tachi ni Dungeon Okuchi de Korosarekaketa ga Gift “Mugen Gacha” de Level 9999 no Nakama-tachi wo Te ni Irete Moto Party Member to Sekai ni Fukushuu & “Zamaa!” Shimasu!). I wish I was lying about that title. You’d think with a title like that it’s a parody, but I’m told it isn’t.

ASH: With a title that long, I’m not sure the novel would actually provide many more details.

SEAN: We also see Black Summoner’s 8th manga volume, Chillin’ in Another World with Level 2 Super Cheat Powers 8, D-Genesis: Three Years after the Dungeons Appeared 2, Housekeeping Mage from Another World: Making Your Adventures Feel Like Home! 3, John Sinclair: Demon Hunter 8, The Magic in this Other World is Too Far Behind!’s 9th manga, Sorcerous Stabber Orphen: The Wayward Journey 19, To Another World… with Land Mines! 4, and VTuber Legend: How I Went Viral after Forgetting to Turn Off My Stream 2.

Kodansha Manga has, in print, EDENS ZERO 19, Fire Force 29, and That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: Trinity in Tempest 6.

Digitally there is more. We see And Yet, You Are So Sweet 6, Are You Lost? 10 (the final volume), Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card 12, Cells at Work! White Brigade 3, Doing His Best to Confess 3, Elegant Yokai Apartment Life 24, Gamaran 2, Golden Gold 5, I Guess I Became the Mother of the Great Demon King’s 10 Children in Another World 6, Medalist 5, A Serenade for Pretend Lovers 5, and She, Her Camera, and Her Seasons 3. Medalist is, as always, something everyone needs to read.

MICHELLE: I am going to start Medalist this week!

ANNA: I need to start it too!

SEAN: One Peace has a 5th manga volume of Higehiro: After Being Rejected, I Shaved and Took in a High School Runaway.

More piles of debut volumes for Seven Seas. CANDY AND CIGARETTES runs in Young Magazine the 3rd, and features a retired cop who needs a job to pay for his grandson’s medical treatment, so partners with… an 11-year-old killer?

ASH: Not a combo I would have expected.

SEAN: The Evil Secret Society of Cats (Aku no Himitsu Soushiki Neko) is from the publisher Eastpress, and their magazine Matogrosso. A group of cats try to show humanity they are to be feared… but shucks, they’re just so adorable! This is in full color.

ASH: Always ready to give cat manga a try.

ANNA: It sounds cute.

SEAN: I Got Fired as a Court Wizard so Now I’m Moving to the Country to Become a Magic Teacher (Kyuutei Mahou-shi Kubi ni Nattande, Inaka ni Kaette Mahou-ka no Sensei ni Narimasu) runs in Takeshobo’s Web Comic Gamma Plus. The plot is the title.

ASH: The premise could have potential.

SEAN: The Saint’s Magic Power is Omnipotent: The Other Saint (Seijo no Maryoku wa Bannou desu: Mou Hitori no Seijo) is a spinoff of the main light novel series, telling the story from the perspective of Airi. It runs in Kadokawa’s Flos Comic.

Also from Seven Seas: The Ancient Magus’ Bride: Wizard’s Blue 5, How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift? 9, The Idaten Deities Know Only Peace 3, and The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbyes: Ultramarine 2.

Square Enix Manga has Soul Eater: The Perfect Edition 8.

Tokyopop has a 2nd volume of Yuri Espoir.

Viz Media has a one-shot, Drip Drip (Bota Bota), with a …striking cover. A young woman can’t see anything she thinks is dirty without getting a massive nosebleed. Can she find love? This is from the creator of BEASTARS, which is likely the only reason we’re seeing it, and it ran in Manga Goraku.

ASH: That is quite the cover.

ANNA: I feel safe skipping this.

SEAN: We get the print debut of Mission: Yozakura Family (Yozakura-san Chi no Daisakusen), which is up to 14 volumes in Japan so it was hard to ignore any longer. It’s a Jump title, about a boy who ends up involved with a family of spies.

Speaking of Jump, The Shonen Jump Guide to Making Manga is what it sounds like, and features commentary from your favorite Jump artists.

Viz also has Children of the Whales 20, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End 6, Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt 18, My Hero Academia Box Set 1 (the first 20 volumes, with an exclusive booklet), Persona 5 9, Record of Ragnarok 4, Twin Star Exorcists 26, and Undead Unluck 9.

ANNA: I need to get caught up on Frieren.

SEAN: Yen On has a lot of ongoing favorites. Bofuri: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense 7, Date a Live 7, Dragon and Ceremony 3, The Girl I Saved on the Train Turned Out to Be My Childhood Friend 3, The Irregular at Magic High School 20, Magical Explorer: Reborn as a Side Character in a Fantasy Dating Sim 3, Magical Girl Raising Project 14, My Youth Romantic Comedy Is Wrong, As I Expected 14.5 (the final volume), Spy Classroom 4, Unnamed Memory 6 (the final volume), and Your Forma 2.

Yen Press has several debuts. The Executioner and Her Way of Life (Shokei Shoujo no Ikirumichi) is an adaptation of the popular light novel, running in Young Gangan.

I Kept Pressing the 100-Million-Year Button and Came Out on Top (Ichioku-nen Button wo Renda shita Ore wa, Kizuitara Saikyou ni Natteita: Rakudai Kenshi no Gakuin Musou) is an adaptation of the popular light novel, running in Young Ace Up.

Sasaki and Peeps: That Time I Got Dragged into a Psychic Battle in Modern Times While Trying to Enjoy a Relaxing Life in Another World ~Looks Like Magical Girls Are On Deck~ (Sasaki to Pi-chan: Isekai de Slow Life o Tanoshi Mou Toshitara, Gendai de Inou Battle ni Makikomareta Ken – Mahou Shoujo Up o Hajimeta You Desu) is an adaptation of the popular light novel, running in Shonen Ace Plus.

ASH: These titles…

SEAN: She Loves to Cook, and She Loves to Eat (Tsukuritai Onna to Tabetai Onna) has a woman make far too much food due to stress from work. Fortunately, her next-door neighbor loves food! This is apparently a yuri series, though slow burn. It runs in ASCII Mediaworks’ Comic It, and is not an adaptation of a popular light novel.

ASH: Slow burn yuri food manga, you say? I’m in!

We also get The Abandoned Empress 3, Banished from the Hero’s Party, I Decided to Live a Quiet Life in the Countryside 3, Chitose Is in the Ramune Bottle 2, Combatants Will Be Dispatched! 7, Daughter of the Emperor 2, The Geek Ex-Hitman 2, In the Land of Leadale 2, Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler – 15, Kakegurui Twin 11, MonsTABOO 2, Nights with a Cat 2, and No Matter How I Look at It, It’s You Guys’ Fault I’m Not Popular! 20.

What manga are you reading? Is it based on the popular light novel?

Manga the Week of 10/12/22

October 6, 2022 by Sean Gaffney, Michelle Smith, Anna N and Ash Brown Leave a Comment

SEAN: Manga the Week of is brought to you this week by Weetabix.

MICHELLE: I will never not associate Weetabix with Spike and Giles.

ASH: Now that you mention it!

SEAN: We start with Yen On, which gives us In the Land of Leadale 6, Magistellus Bad Trip 2, and Sasaki and Peeps 2.

While Yen Press has The Hero Laughs While Walking the Path of Vengeance a Second Time 2 and Kaiju Girl Caramelise 6.

ASH: Oh, I somehow didn’t realize that Kaiju Girl Caramelise was an ongoing series.

SEAN: Viz Media debuts Dandadan, a Shonen Jump + title. A boy believes in aliens, but thinks ghosts are the bunk. A girl in his school believes the exact opposite. Together they will discover… that aliens and ghosts are too spicy for Shonen Jump’s app, I can tell you that.

ASH: Ha!

Also from Viz: Case Closed 84, Kaiju No. 8 4, Komi Can’t Communicate 21, Sakamoto Days 4, and Splatoon 15.

Tokyopop has a shoujo debut, Formerly, the Fallen Daughter of the Duke (Moto, Ochikobore Koushaku Reijou desu). J-Novel Club releases the light novel of this. The manga runs in MAGCOMI. It’s essentially a Villainess story, even if the lead isn’t evil in the original.

They also have a new one-shot, Hyperventilation. This BL manwha features two guys who meet again at a high school reunion and rekindle things.

Titan Books debut Atom – The Beginning, which runs in Shogakukan’s Heros magazine. It is, as you may have guessed, a prequel to Tezuka’s Astro Boy.

ASH: I am intrigued.

SEAN: SuBLime has Black or White 5 and Moon & Sun 2 (the final volume).

ASH: Which reminds me that I’ve been meaning to read the first volume.

SEAN: Square Enix Manga gives us Beauty and the Feast 4, Hi Score Girl 9, and My Isekai Life 3.

Seven Seas once again has a number of debuts. Black and White: Tough Love at the Office (Shiro to Kuro) probably has that subtitle to set it apart from other manga with similar titles. Two women at the same office who can’t seem to stop a) beating the shit out of each other or b) having sex with each other have to team up to solve a mystery. It runs in Comic Ruelle.

ASH: Not the type of yuri series we often see.

SEAN: Hunting in Another World With My Elf Wife (Hokkaidou no Geneki Hunter ga Isekai ni Hourikoma Rete Mita – Elf Yome to Meguru Isekai Shuryou Life) is a MAGCOMI title. A hunter gets killed by a bear and ends up in a fantasy world… but he still has his shotgun!

SHWD is also from Comic Ruelle. It stands for Special Hazardous Waste Disposal, and has been described as “yuri buddy cop story meets horror”.

ASH: Another atypical combination!

SEAN: Seven Seas also has Cat Massage Therapy 3, Creepy Cat 4 (the final volume), The Duke of Death and His Maid 3, The Girl From the Other Side: Siúil, a Rún Deluxe Edition II, Kemono Jihen 2, Magic Artisan Dahlia Wilts No More 3, The Saint’s Magic Power is Omnipotent 6, and This Is Screwed Up, but I Was Reincarnated as a GIRL in Another World! 3.

MICHELLE: I enjoyed the first volume of Kemono Jihen so look forward to the second.

ASH: I’m buying The Girl From the Other Side again; the deluxe edition is lovely.

SEAN: One Peace Books debuts Usotoki Rhetoric, a Bessatsu Hana to Yume title (!) about a girl who can hear lies teaming up with a detective in the mid-1920s.

MICHELLE: Ooooh. This sounds potentially fun!

ASH: It does!

SEAN: They’ve also got I Belong to the Baddest Girl at School 5.

Kodansha debuts Last Gender (Last Gender: Nanimono demo nai Watashitachi), an LGBT title about a hidden bar where people can explore different sides of themselves. It ran in Evening Magazine.

ASH: My curiosity is piqued.

SEAN: And they also have Shonen Note: Boy Soprano, a Morning Two title from the creator of Shimanami Tasogare. A middle school student with a wonderful soprano voice runs into issues growing up. This has been nominated for awards.

MICHELLE: I’ll definitely be checking this out.

ASH: I’ve really been looking forward to this one, too.

SEAN: And they have this weird poster book/artbook/massive thing, AKIRA: Art of Wall.

Also in print: The Ghost in the Shell: The Human Algorithm 3, Island in a Puddle 4, Lovesick Ellie 6, The Seven Deadly Sins: Four Knights of the Apocalypse 5, and Something’s Wrong With Us 11.

Digitally, we see The Fable 7, Giant Killing 33, Girlfriend, Girlfriend 10, Medaka Kuroiwa is Impervious to My Charms 4, My Maid, Miss Kishi 4, Police in a Pod 17, Quality Assurance in Another World 6, The Shadows of Who We Once Were 5, Tokyo Revengers 27, and Vampire Dormitory 7.

MICHELLE: One day I really will succeed in getting caught up on Giant Killing.

SEAN: J-Novel Club has a light novel debut. Yuri Tama: From Third Wheel to Trifecta (Yuri no Ma ni Hasamareta Watashi ga, Ikioi de Futamata Shite Shimatta) features a girl who is best friends with her school’s yuri power couple. Sadly, that means everyone else hates her. She doesn’t like herself much either. Then… both of her friends, separately, ask her out. And she says yes. To both of them.

ASH: Oh, my!

SEAN: Also digital: The Apothecary Diaries 6, the 8th manga volume of An Archdemon’s Dilemma: How to Love Your Elf Bride, Full Metal Panic! Short Stories 2, In Another World With My Smartphone 26, My Quiet Blacksmith Life in Another World 4, and The Reincarnated Princess Spends Another Day Skipping Story Routes 5.

Drawn and Quarterly are reissuing all four volumes of Shigeru Mizuki’s Showa: A History of Japan, with new cover art, as well as single volume Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths.

ASH: Very glad to see Mizuki’s work staying in print.

SEAN: And now we jump to Airship, which has some print light novels. We see the print debut of The Case Files of Jeweler Richard. There’s also Berserk of Gluttony 7, Failure Frame: I Became the Strongest and Annihilated Everything With Low-Level Spells 5, and I’m in Love with the Villainess 5 (the final volume).

ASH: I’ve been waiting for The Case Files of Jeweler Richard.

SEAN: And in early digital we see I Swear I Won’t Bother You Again! 2, I’m the Evil Lord of an Intergalactic Empire! 3, and Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear 12.

Please enjoy this delicious manga made from whole grains. What are you eating next week?

Manga the Week of 10/5/22

September 29, 2022 by Sean Gaffney, Michelle Smith, Ash Brown and Anna N Leave a Comment

SEAN: It’s October, so all your manga tastes like pumpkin spice. Go one, try a page.

MICHELLE: Why, it’s positively delightful!

SEAN: Airship first. After a long wait, mostly as the series switched publishers in Japan and new contracts needed to be written, we have the 14th volume of Didn’t I Say to Make My Abilities Average in the Next Life?!. This is print AND digital, so no early stuff here.

There is an early digital debut, though, with The Weakest Tamer Began a Journey to Pick Up Trash (Saijaku Tamer wa Gomihiroi no Tabi wo Hajimemashita). The premise sounds very similar to A Late Start Tamer’s Laid-Back Life, but we’ll see how this “my seemingly weak class and skills get me abused but they’re actually REALLY STRONG” series goes.

And we also have an early version of Survival in Another World with My Mistress! 3.

Cross Infinite World has a 2nd volume of I’d Rather Have a Cat than a Harem! Reincarnated into the World of an Otome Game as a Cat-loving Villainess.

Dark Horse Comics gives us Blade of the Immortal Deluxe Edition 7.

ASH: Like Dark Horse’s other deluxe editions, these are hefty but beautiful volumes. I’m happily upgrading my collection.

Ghost Ship has a 5th volume of Sundome!! Milky Way.

A bunch of print for J-Novel Club. We see Ascendance of a Bookworm’s 11th manga volume, By the Grace of the Gods 10, The Faraway Paladin’s 4th manga omnibus, In Another World With My Smartphone 24, Seirei Gensouki: Spirit Chronicles Omnibus 7, The Unwanted Undead Adventurer 8, and The White Cat’s Revenge as Plotted from the Dragon King’s Lap 5.

The debut from J-Novel Club is Seventh. It’s the story of a noble who ends up cast from their family after being publicly disgraced, forced to try to find a way to survive. The catch is that this isn’t a villainess series, the lead character is a Duke. And not a villain. Then again, that younger sister of his looks suspiciously like an otome game heroine…

ASH: Hmmm…

SEAN: Also digital: Ascendance of a Bookworm 21, Holmes of Kyoto 11, A Late-Start Tamer’s Laid-Back Life 4, My Friend’s Little Sister Has It In for Me! 8, My Stepmom’s Daughter Is My Ex 4, Sweet Reincarnation 7, Tearmoon Empire’s 2nd manga volume, and When Supernatural Battles Became Commonplace 4.

Kodansha’s print debut is Be Very Afraid of Kanako Inuki! (Inuki Kanako no Daikyoufu!), a horror one-shot from the “queen of horror manga”. This has several of her most famous short stories, designed to terrify young girls. They ran in various magazines.

ANNA: OK, stories designed to terrify young girls sound interesting.

ASH: I’m looking forward to giving this one a try. Always game for new horror manga.

SEAN: I forgot to mention, the author of these stories also did School Zone, a horror manga Dark Horse put out long, long ago which was reviewed by our own Kate Dacey. http://mangacritic.mangabookshelf.com/2010/10/24/my-10-favorite-spooky-manga/

ASH: Oh, that’s a manga in good company!

SEAN: Also in print: Grand Blue Dreaming 17, Orient 10, Peach Boy Riverside 8, Rent-a-Girlfriend 14, Sailor Moon Naoko Takeuchi Collection 4, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime 20, and Wandance 2.

MICHELLE: The first volume of Wandance was a lot of fun.

SEAN: As for digital… keeping in mind I am working from secondary sources… the debut is Raised by the Demon Kings! (Sodatechi Maou!). If you can imagine Three Men and a Baby but with rival demon kings, you’ve got this one. It ran in Magazine Special.

Also digital: The Abandoned Reincarnation Sage 6, Changes of Heart 6, Chihayafuru 34, Desert Eagle 4, A Galaxy Next Door 3, The God-Tier Guardian and the Love of Six Princesses 2, I’ll Never Send a Selfie Again! 5, Kounodori: Dr. Stork 28, My Boyfriend in Orange 12, and Our Love Doesn’t Need a Happy Ending 3 (the final volume)

Some more debuts from Seven Seas. Free Life Fantasy Online: Immortal Princess (Jingai Hime-sama, Hajimemashita – Free Life Fantasy Online) is the manga version of a series that just had its light novel also licensed by Seven Seas. A newbie gamer gets a new VR game from her younger sister… but her character build is horrible! Now she’s a zombie.

Imaginary is a josei title from Rakuen Le Paradis. A young man reconnects with a childhood friend he never confessed to. Can he manage to bond with her anew?

MICHELLE: This looks potentially interesting!

ANNA: Yay for josei!

ASH: Yes, indeed!

SEAN: Night of the Living Cat runs in Comic Garden, and the premise is horrifyingly adorable. Instead of zombies, humans who pet cats become cats themselves!

ASH: Goodness!

SEAN: The Summer You Were There (Kimi to Tsuzuru Utakata) is a Comic Yuri Hine series from the creator of The Girl I Want is So Handsome!. A shy girl is a romance writer, but when her classmate gets her hands on a manuscript, she suggests more writing experience… by the two of them dating!

Tentai Books theoretically has print releases for some of their recent digital-only light novels. We see From Toxic Classmate to Girlfriend Goals 1, I Kissed my Girlfriend’s Little Sister?! 1, There’s No Way a Side Character Like Me Could Be Popular Right? 3, and You Like Me, Don’t You? So, Wanna Go Out With Me? 1.

Tokyopop has the 11th volume of Konohana Kitan.

Viz debuts Romantic Killer, a Shojo Beat romance series from Shonen Jump +. (There was a HUGE fight about this online, but look, it’s shoujo, get over where it ran. I can’t believe I’M the one saying that, but…) A girl who’s not all that interested in guys is moved to a virtual reality where there’s nothing BUT hot guys. I’ve heard this is quite fun.

ANNA: Wow, it must be difficult for her to be surrounded by so many hot guys.

SEAN: Also out next week: Boruto: Naruto Next Generations 15, Dr. STONE 23, Moriarty the Patriot 9, My Hero Academia 32, My Love Mix-Up! 5, Snow White with the Red Hair 21, and Yona of the Dawn 37.

MICHELLE: Gotta get caught up on the Shojo Beat titles!

ANNA: Me too! Always glad to see a new volume of Yona.

ASH: Same!

SEAN: Yen On debuts Sugar Apple Fairy Tale, a fantasy romance novel series from the creator of Culinary Chronicles of the Court Flower. The story of a candy crafter trying to become a Silver Sugar Master seems sweet as pie, but the “I’m purchasing a fairy, as they are treated like property in this world” will be a bar it’s going to have to clear.

ASH: The candy crafting side of things has potential, but… yeah.

SEAN: We also get Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki 8.5, The Detective Is Already Dead 4, A Sister’s All You Need 13, Suppose a Kid from the Last Dungeon Boonies Moved to a Starter Town 10, and Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina 9.

Three debuts for Yen Press. Gahi-chan! runs in Comic Dengeki Daioh “g”, and has its sights firmly aimed at 14-year-old boys who love unrealistic body types. A manga artist finds his heroine has shown up on his door! She’s actually a yokai… who can eat his art and transform it into a suit of skin, which she then wears. Despite sounding like a horror premise, it’s an ecchi comedy.

ASH: The yokai part of that description caught my attention, but I’m not sure about the rest of it.

SEAN: Tsubaki-chou Lonely Planet is a shoujo title from Margaret, from the creator of Daytime Shooting Star. A girl whose father has put their family in debt finds a job as a housekeeper to a surly novelist. What’s worse, she has to live there.

MICHELLE: Interesting that Yen is picking up these Margaret titles. This is the second one, after No Longer Heroine.

ANNA: Cool, I’m curious about this.

SEAN: And Unnamed Memory is the manga adaptation of the wonderful light novel series. It runs in Comic Dengeki Daioh.

Also from Yen: Angels of Death Episode.0 4, Bungo Stray Dogs: Wan! 3, Chained Soldier 2, 86–EIGHTY-SIX 3, The Eminence in Shadow 5, The Fiancee Chosen by the Ring 2, Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? On the Side: Sword Oratoria 18, So I’m a Spider, So What? The Daily Lives of the Kumoko Sisters 4, Toilet-bound Hanako-kun 16, and Yowamushi Pedal 21.

ASH: I’m finally close to being caught up with Yowamushi Pedal and have been enjoying the ride.

SEAN: I guess EVERYONE finally got their manga back from the printers. What are you getting?

Manga the Week of 9/28/22

September 22, 2022 by Sean Gaffney, Michelle Smith, Ash Brown and Anna N Leave a Comment

SEAN: Oh no, I’m awake, September must be ending!

Yen On is taking the week off, but we have some Yen Press manga. Dead Mount Death Play 8, Laid-Back Camp 12, Play It Cool, Guys 4, and Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-, The Frozen Bond 2.

From Viz Media we debut a JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure spinoff, Thus Spoke Rohan Kishibe (Kishibe Rohan wa Ugokanai). This features a series of short stories starring the eccentric guy from Diamond Is Unbreakable, and is coming out in deluxe hardcover, same as the JJBA volumes.

ASH: I’m looking forward to this one; Rohan is an interesting and popular character. (And he was also my introduction to JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure as a whole.)

ANNA: Yep!

SEAN: We also see Fist of the North Star 6 and Fullmetal Alchemist: The Ties That Bind (another reissue of an FMA light novel).

ASH: Still very happy to see Fist of the North Star coming out!

SEAN: Tokyopop debuts On or Off, a BL manwha webtoon about the dangers of falling for your boss.

They also have the 2nd volume of supernatural BL series Fangs.

After a number of minimal weeks from Seven Seas, they got everything back from the printers this time around. We start with 7th Time Loop: The Villainess Enjoys a Carefree Life Married to Her Worst Enemy! (Loop 7-kaime no Akuyaku Reijou wa, Moto Tekikoku de Juukimama na Hanayome Seikatsu o Mankitsu Suru), a manga adaptation of the light novel series Seven Seas also released. It comes from Comic Gardo.

Cats and Sugar Bowls (Neko to Sugar Pot) is a collection of yuri-themed short stories by the same author, and is a single volume.

ASH: That sounds like it could be promising.

SEAN: A Chinese Fantasy: The Dragon King’s Daughter (Chuugoku Gensousen) runs in Futabasha’s Web Action, and is a series of classic Chinese folktales adopted into manga form.

ASH: Count me curious, for sure!

SEAN: Crossplay Love: Otaku x Punk (Josou Shite Mendokusai Koto ni Natteru Nekura to Yankee no Ryou Kataomoi), an LGBT comedy about two guys who want to visit a maid cafe, but only feel comfortable doing so dressed as girls. It’s from Mag Garden’s MAGXIV.

ASH: I am intrigued.

SEAN: Dinosaur Sanctuary (Dinosan) is from Shinchosha’s Comic Bunch, and asks what happens, after the events of “A Certain Movie”, to the other Dinosaur-themed zoos around the world?

ASH: That’s a fun premise.

SEAN: Lazy Dungeon Master (Zettai ni Hatarakitakunai Dungeon Master ga Damin wo Musaboru made) has had the novel coming out from J-Novel Club for a while now. Here’s the manga version, which runs in Comic Gardo.

Love is an Illusion! is a manwha webtoon that delves into the story of a guy who spends his whole life thinking he’s an alpha… till he runs into a real alpha who sees he’s just an omega deep down. BL, as you likely guessed.

Seven Seas also has The Case Files of Jeweler Richard 3, GIGANT 9, Hitomi-chan is Shy With Strangers 5, I’m in Love with the Villainess 3, Kiruru Kill Me 3, The Legend of Dororo and Hyakkimaru 5, Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation 15, No Matter What You Say, Furi-san is Scary! 4, and Skeleton Knight in Another World 9.

One Peace Books debuts The Death Mage (Yondome wa Iyana Shi Zokusei Majutsushi), a light novel about a young man who is tired of getting reincarnated and then dying all over again, and resolves to use his powers from previous lives to put a stop to that.

ASH: I can understand that feeling.

SEAN: From Kodansha Manga we get the debut of Miss Miyazen Would Love to Get Closer to You (Ochikadzuki ni Naritai Miyazen-san). This Gangan Joker series has a girl trying to get to know the school’s delinquent, despite him being terrible at, well, communication. We know this genre by now.

ANNA: OK, I know the genre but I also enjoy people falling in love with delinquents.

SEAN: Also in print: EDENS ZERO 18.

Digitally we see Altair: A Record of Battles 25, Burn the House Down 4, A Couple of Cuckoos 9, DAYS 31, My Tentative Name 3, My Wonderful World 3, Oh, Those Hanazono Twins 5, The Prince’s Romance Gambit 11, SHAMAN KING & a garden 3, Tesla Note 6, and That’s My Atypical Girl 6, which definitely won’t be getting the Feature Image this week.

MICHELLE: Okay, finally some stuff for me. I am really curious about Burn the House Down and desperately need to get caught up on DAYS.

SEAN: Two debuts from J-Novel Club. Re:RE — Reincarnator Executioner (Re:RE -Ri: Āruī- Tenseisha o Korosu Mono) is a dark fantasy about a father trying to get back his daughter, whose body has been possessed by the evil Reincarnators.

Our other debut is a one-shot from the author of How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom. Yashiro-kun’s Guide to Going Solo (Yashiro-kun no Ohitorisama Kōza) is a reversal of books like Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki – a trendy girl is asking the lone wolf how she can be more like him!

J-Novel Club also has Did I Seriously Just Get Reincarnated as My Gag Character?!’s 2nd manga volume, The Ideal Sponger Life 8, Record of Wortenia War’s 8th manga volume, and Welcome to Japan, Ms. Elf!’s 6th manga volume.

Ghost Ship gives us Booty Royale: Never Go Down Without a Fight! 7-8 and Desire Pandora 3.

Dark Horse Comics has the 10th omnibus of GANTZ.

ASH: That’s a series I’ve not thought about in a long while.

SEAN: Cross Infinite World has Surviving in Another World as a Villainess Fox Girl! (Scenario Nante Iranai! Rival Chara no Kitsunekko). This book has not one but TWO “reincarnated into an otome game” characters, each with different motivations to save their favorite character. Unfortunately, their plans don’t match up.

Airship debuts a new “beautifully depressing” novel from the creator of I Want to Eat Your Pancreas. I Will Forget This Feeling Someday (Kono Kimochi mo Itsuka Wasureru) is about a couple trying their hardest to BE a couple despite being from different dimensions.

ASH: I often enjoy novels of that type, though I’m not sure I’m feeling up to it at the moment.

SEAN: We also get early digital volumes of Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation 19 and Though I Am an Inept Villainess: Tale of the Butterfly-Rat Body Swap in the Maiden Court 2.

There’s a ton of stuff here, after the September of Barely Any Manga. What are you getting?

Manga the Week of 9/21/22

September 15, 2022 by Sean Gaffney, Michelle Smith, Anna N, Ash Brown and MJ Leave a Comment

SEAN: OK, now it’s the first week of Autumn, and there’s even rain! A good week to read some manga!

ASH: Truly!

SEAN: Airship starts us off with print titles. The 2nd volume of Classroom of the Elite: Year 2, Monster Girl Doctor 9, and The Strange Adventure of a Broke Mercenary 5.

And their early digital titles are Reborn as a Space Mercenary: I Woke Up Piloting the Strongest Starship! 5 and The Strange Adventure of a Broke Mercenary 6.

ASH: A mercenary sort of week, it seems.

SEAN: After a 3-year wait, Fantagraphics finally gives us the 2nd and final omnibus of The Poe Clan.

MICHELLE: Just in time for spooky season.

ANNA: I still need to read the first volume of The Poe Clan, but I own it. Maybe I’ll do a Poe Clan binge for spooky season.

ASH: So glad to see this coming out!

MJ: Yes!

SEAN: Ghost Ship gives us DARLING in the FRANXX 5-6.

There’s two new J-Novel Club light novel series. The Conqueror from a Dying Kingdom (Horobi no Kuni no Seifukusha – Maou wa Sekai wo Seifuku suru you desu). A man dies and is reincarnated in another world. He has a loving family, a promising future, etc. But… he knows that eventually bad things are going to happen. Now he has to figure out how to fix it.

DUNGEON DIVE: Aim for the Deepest Level (Isekai Meikyuu no Saishinbu o Mezasou) is our other debut. For once our kid who wakes up in a fantasy dungeon is desperate to get back home… because he has an ailing sister in Japan to care for. His only chance is to reach the very bottom, where the rumor is any wish can be granted.

ASH: Both of those may have potentially interesting twists on the genre.

SEAN: Also coming out: Black Summoner 10, The Master of Ragnarok & Blesser of Einherjar 21, The Misfit of Demon King Academy 2, Record of Wortenia War 16, and Reincarnated as the Piggy Duke: This Time I’m Gonna Tell Her How I Feel! 7.

Kodansha Comics has precisely one print volume, and it is Blue Period 9.

The digital debut is Gamaran, a Weekly Shonen Magazine title from about 12 years ago that ran for 22 volumes, followed by an ongoing sequel. It’s a martial arts series, so any plot description will be secondary to TOURNAMENT ARCS!.

MICHELLE: Man, I am weak against tournament arcs!

MJ: Honestly, so am I…

SEAN: Also out next week: The Abandoned Reincarnation Sage 5, Anyway, I’m Falling in Love With You 4, Blue Lock 15, Chihiro-kun Only Has Eyes for Me 7, The Dawn of the Witch 5, Golden Gold 4, Hella Chill Monsters 3 (the final volume), Hozuki’s Coolheadedness 10, Mr. Bride 6, A Serenade for Pretend Lovers 4, Shaman King Marcos 4, She, Her Camera, and Her Seasons 2, The Untouchable Midori-kun 2, and We’re New at This 11.

MICHELLE: I am a recent and enthusiastic convert to Blue Lock, so I’m happy I now have thirteen volumes to marathon digitally.

ANNA: Woo!

SEAN: Seven Seas debuts Anti-Romance, a BL title from Gentosha’s Rutile about two young men who’ve lived together for six years but are not quite more than friends. This is from the creator of Blue Morning. Seven Seas’s edition has extra material.

MICHELLE: Blue Morning was great, so I’m looking forward to this.

ASH: Same! I’ve enjoyed every Shoko Hidaka manga that I’ve read so far.

MJ: So here for this.

SEAN: His Majesty the Demon King’s Housekeeper (Maou Heika no Osoji Gakari) is from Akita Shoten’s Princess, a magazine I am very happy to see licenses from again. A girl with cleaning magic is transported to another world under an anti-cleaning curse! This sure sounds like shoujo, all right. Hopefully we’ll see more than just housekeeping.

ANNA: I enjoy shoujo and demons!

ASH: It’s frequently a good combination.

SEAN: And then there’s more BL, as we also get Monotone Blue, a one-shot from Be x Boy GOLD. This is from the creator of The Girl from the Other Side, and is a high school romance between a cat and a lizard. Well, OK, a catboy and a lizardboy.

MICHELLE: Huh.

ANNA: OK, tentatively here for this.

ASH: I do tend to like Nagabe’s manga, so I plan on picking it up.

MJ: Um. Yes.

SEAN: In continuing volumes, we get She Professed Herself Pupil of the Wise Man 6.

Tokyopop finally updated its website, so I can tell you that we see the third volume of Mame Coordinate.

Viz debuts the print edition of Look Back, from the creator of Chainsaw Man. When this came out digitally, everyone I know read it and loved it. It’s about drawing manga, but be warned: the word “poignant” applies here.

ANNA: Poignant and from the creator of Chainsaw Man sounds like quite the combination.

SEAN: Also from Viz: Alice in Borderland 3, BEASTARS 20, Crazy Food Truck 2, Golden Kamuy 27, Hayate the Combat Butler 40, Maison Ikkoku: Collector’s Edition 9, Seraph of the End 25, and Spy x Family 8.

MICHELLE: Gotta get caught up with Spy x Family.

ANNA: Me too. My household loves the anime.

ASH: So far, I’ve really been enjoying that series.

MJ: Same here!

SEAN: Three titles from Yen On: Hazure Skill: The Guild Member with a Worthless Skill Is Actually a Legendary Assassin 4, The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess 2, and Sword Art Online 25.

Lastly, there’s Yen Press. The debut is Josee, the Tiger and the Fish, the manga adaptation of the novel (and movie). This is complete in one omnibus.

Also coming out: the 11th and final volume of Shibuya Goldfish, Solo Leveling 5, Tales of Wedding Rings 11, and The Wolf Never Sleeps 2.

This seems more like a normal week of manga. What are you getting?

Manga the Week of 9/15/22

September 8, 2022 by Sean Gaffney, Anna N, Michelle Smith and Ash Brown Leave a Comment

SEAN: Has fall arrived yet? Certainly not QUITE here as of yet.

ASH: So close! I can’t wait.

SEAN: Yen Press is taking the week off, for the most part. No light novels, and only two manga. One of those is a debut, however. No Longer Heroine (Heroine Shikkaku) is a shoujo series from Betsuma. It’s also 12 years old, showing that yes, older titles can still be picked up. Our heroine is a childhood friend! She’s going to get married to her guy! Because childhood friends always win in Japanese series… right? Right? (cricket noises)

ANNA: OK, I have to admit my curiosity about slightly vintage shoujo.

MICHELLE: I typically like series from Margaret and its offshoots, so I’m cautiously optimistic about this one!

ASH: Count me interested, too!

SEAN: And we also get the 23rd volume of Triage X.

No debuts for Viz, but we get new volumes of Animal Crossing: New Horizons 3, Call of the Night 9, Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai 4, Fly Me to the Moon 13, Mao 7, Mashle: Magic and Muscles 8, Pokémon Adventures: X•Y 3, Rosen Blood 4, and Yakuza Lover 6.

ANNA: Some things here I need to get caught up on!

SEAN: SuBLime debuts Love Nest, a Dear+ series that’s actually another spinoff from Sayonara Game.

ASH: I still need to read that one.

SEAN: And they’ve also got the 5th and final volume of Jealousy.

There’s a new Steamship debut, Ladies on Top (Onnanoko ga Daicha Dame desu ka?). This Ura Sunday Jyoshibu series is about a 24-year-old OL who’s had a series of bad relationships because the guys take the lead. Then she starts dating a 28-year-old co-worker who likes aggressive women and awakens her hidden dom…

ASH: I haven’t read a Steamship title yet, but this one caught my attention, so it may be the first.

SEAN: Square Enix debuts the manga version of My Happy Marriage (Watashi no Shiawase na Kekkon), whose light novel Yen is putting out. It runs in Gangan Online. The light novel is excellent… but expect the title to be ironic, at least for the start.

ASH: It’s interesting to me how these cross-publisher titles seem to be happening more frequently these days.

SEAN: They’ve also got the 6th manga volume for The Apothecary Diaries.

ASH: Yay!

SEAN: Seven Seas has Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid in COLOR! – Chromatic Edition. This one-shot collects the best/funniest/most heartwarming scenes in the manga and does them in full color.

One Peace Books has the 19th volume of The Rising of the Shield Hero’s manga.

In print, Kodansha Manga has the debut of a series already out digitally, I Was Reincarnated as the 7th Prince so I Can Take My Time Perfecting My Magical Ability (Tensei Shitara dai Nana Ouji dattanode, Kimamani Majutsu o Kiwamemasu). It is what it sounds like.

There’s also the 2nd and final volume of A Silent Voice Complete Collector’s Edition.

ASH: I’m double-dipping for the additional content.

SEAN: Digitally, we see new volumes of Ace of the Diamond 39, The Fable 6, Falling Drowning 3 (the final volume), A Kiss with a Cat 4, My Maid, Miss Kishi 3, Police in a Pod 16, The Shadows of Who We Once Were 4, Shangri-La Frontier 7, and WIND BREAKER 6.

MICHELLE: I thought Falling Drowning was pretty interesting and look forward to completing it. And, of course, here’s my obligatory pledge to catch up on Ace of the Diamond.

SEAN: Kaiten Books has a digital release for the 7th manga volume of Loner Life in Another World.

Two light novel debuts for J-Novel Club. Death’s Daughter and the Ebony Blade (Shinigami ni Sodaterareta Shoujo wa Shikkoku no Tsurugi wo Mune ni Idaku) has a baby discovered by a mysterious person in the middle of nowhere. She is taught combat and magic… then her mystery benefactor disappears! Now she has to leave the middle of nowhere to find them. (The title perhaps gives away who the mystery person is.)

ASH: Spoilers!

SEAN: There’s also Formerly, the Fallen Daughter of the Duke (Moto, Ochikobore Koushaku Reijou desu). Our heroine is raised to be a mage and the fiancee to a prince… then all the magic talent goes to her sister, so she’s tossed aside. Now she tries to make her way as an adventurer… but wait. Why is she suddenly finding herself in modern-day Japan? Her life is a game? And she’s a side character? Like heck. She’s going to catch her own good end.

We also get a manga debut, Isekai Tensei: Recruited to Another World. This is the manga version of the light novel we’ve already talked about. It runs in MAGICOMI.

J-Novel Club also has Demon Lord, Retry! 8, Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash 18, Perry Rhodan NEO 9, Reborn to Master the Blade: From Hero-King to Extraordinary Squire ♀ 6, and the 2nd The Saga of Lioncourt manga.

Ghost Ship has a 4th volume for Into the Deepest, Most Unknowable Dungeon.

Cross Infinite World has a new title, The Saint’s Belated Happiness: Newly Single, Now Living with the Demon Prince (Iki Okure Seijo no Shiawase – Konyaku Hakisareta to Omottara Mazoku no Ouji-sama ni Dekiaisaretemasu!). The saint has spent years saving the world… so many years that she’s now 27, so her fiance the prince dumps her for being too old. Going home, she finds a young boy… with horns. Who rapidly grows up to be The Demon Prince. He probably cares less that she’s a Christmas Cake.

Airship, in print, has Accomplishments of the Duke’s Daughter 6.

Digitally, the early debut is The World’s Fastest Level Up (Sekai Saisoku no Level Up!). You’ll never believe this. This boy has a skill. But everyone thinks it’s useless and hates him. Then, he finds out it’s the most powerful skill ever! Now he’ll be the strongest with the help of hot pink-haired heroine and hot blue-haired heroine! … sigh.

There’s also the 3rd volume of Loner Life in Another World, which at least I know is not taking itself seriously. Mostly.

Is it me, or is print manga just in a massive lull? What are you getting next week?

Manga the Week of 9/7/22

September 2, 2022 by Sean Gaffney, Michelle Smith, Ash Brown and Anna N Leave a Comment

SEAN: It’s September, and Manga Bookshelf doesn’t even have an AOL account. What are we going to do?

ASH: LOL

SEAN: Airship has early digital releases for the third volume of Classroom of the Elite: Year 2 and The Most Notorious “Talker” Runs the World’s Greatest Clan 3.

From J-Novel Club we get some print titles. Ascendance of a Bookworm 14, Marginal Operation 11, My Next Life As a Villainess 11, and The Unwanted Undead Adventurer 7 (manga version).

ASH: Obligatory, “Yay, Bookworm!”

SEAN: Digitally there’s Cooking with Wild Game 18, Culinary Chronicles of the Court Flower 7, a third volume of Demon Lord, Retry! R, and Seirei Gensouki: Spirit Chronicles 20.

Kodansha Manga has new titles. In print, there’s a debut of Shangri-La Frontier, which we saw the e-book of already. VR game stuff.

We also see The Hero Life of a (Self-Proclaimed) “Mediocre” Demon! 6, The Heroic Legend of Arslan 16, When Will Ayumu Make His Move? 7, and The Witch and the Beast 9.

Kodansha’s new digital title is The God-Tier Guardian and the Love of Six Princesses (Rokuhime wa Kami Goei ni Koi wo Suru), a shonen title from Suiyōbi no Sirius. A knight reincarnated to support his liege in her future life. Sadly… her soul is in six different people!

There’s also Abe-kun’s Got Me Now! 9, Changes of Heart 5, Desert Eagle 3, Drifting Dragons 12, Kounodori: Dr. Stork 27, My Idol Sits the Next Desk Over! 5, Our Love Doesn’t Need a Happy Ending 2, and Vampire Dormitory 9.

KUMA has The Song of Yoru & Asa Encore, a sequel to, well, The Song of Yoru & Asa. It’s complete in one volume, and ran in Takeshobo’s Qpa.

ASH: I still need to read the original volume, but I plan on picking this one up.

SEAN: Seven Seas had some date reshuffles recently, so we get one book. But it’s a debut! Correspondence from the End of the Universe (Hate no Shoutsuushin) is about a young Russian man who’s abducted from his life and his fiancee by aliens, who give him a 10-year mission! Nothing he can do but get down to it. This josei title ran in Comic PASH!.

MICHELLE: Huh. Well, it’s certainly a unique concept.

ASH: That, and josei!

ANNA: Sounds a little wacky, that might be a good thing.

SEAN: Square Enix manga has the 5th volume of By the Grace of the Gods.

Viz has several new volumes. We see Black Clover 30, The Elusive Samurai 2, Ghost Reaper Girl 2, Ima Koi: Now I’m in Love 3, Kubo Won’t Let Me Be Invisible 3, My Hero Academia: Vigilantes 13, Prince Freya 7, and Queen’s Quality 15.

MICHELLE: Several shoujo series here I still need to check out.

ASH: I’m a bit behind, but I’ve been enjoying Queen’s Quality.

ANNA: Me too, I need to get caught up.

SEAN: And we end with Yen. Yen On has Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? 17, Ishura 2, and Reign of the Seven Spellblades 6.

And Yen Press gives the people what they want: another PMMM spinoff. Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Another Story focuses on Mami Tomoe and gives her stuff to do which the main series could not do because she became a meme instead. This runs in Comic Fuz.

There’s also The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady 2, Overlord 15, and Sword Art Online: Girls’ Ops 8 (the final volume).

Huh. That’s almost as tiny a week as this week. Did everyone spend money on textbooks rather than manga?

ASH: Could be!
