Pick of the Week: Art Books, Final Volumes, and They Were 11 – Again

May 5, 2025 by Sean Gaffney, Michelle Smith, Anna N and Ash Brown 1 Comment

SEAN: Tempting as it is to pick the MILF manga, I know deep down it will be bad. So I’ll make my pick The Apothecary Diaries art book, which I know will definitely be gorgeous.

MICHELLE: I very much liked suu Morishita’s Shortcake Cake, and it’s a shame I have not managed to read any Like a Butterfly before it finished, but there is a certain appeal in reading the whole thing in one go! So, that’ll be my pick this week.

ANNA: I’m behind in Like a Butterfly, but I very much like what I have read, so I’ll join with Michelle in making it my pick.

ASH: I’m going to join Sean this week in choosing The Apothecary Diaries Art Book. I don’t always have enough time to read everything that I want, but I can usually squeeze in a moment or three into my schedule to look at pretty illustrations.

ANNA: I have a bonus pick. I got a notification that They Were 11! shipped! I’m going rogue and picking that too!

MICHELLE: I got that notification, too!

Pick of the Week: Boxers, Idols, and Vampires

April 28, 2025 by Michelle Smith, Katherine Dacey, Sean Gaffney, Anna N and Ash Brown Leave a Comment

MICHELLE: This week, it’s Ashita no Joe that appeals to me the most. I continue to be grateful that this is being released!

KATE: I second Michelle’s pick! We need more classic sports manga available in English.

SEAN: Because I enjoyed New Game!, I’ll give my pick this week to a new work from its author, Idol x Idol Story!.

ANNA: I’m also making Ashita no Joe my pick!

ASH: I do love that Ashita no Joe is being translated, but this is likely the only chance I have to pick A Vampire in the Bathhouse which looks like an utterly ridiculous (in a good way) josei manga. It was the rubber duckies on the cover that tipped the scales for me.

Pick of the Week: Tamaki & Amane (and They Were 11!)

April 21, 2025 by Sean Gaffney, Michelle Smith, Katherine Dacey, Anna N and Ash Brown Leave a Comment

SEAN: Of course, we already picked They Were 11! unanimously back in January when the preorder pages fooled us all. As such, of course, that is our pick this week as well. HOWEVER, we will also be picking another title in the interests of fairness. So I’m picking the new Fumi Yoshinaga, Tamaki & Amane, which looks fantastic.

MICHELLE: I can’t conceive of a time when I *wouldn’t* pick a new Fumi Yoshinaga! So, yes, same for me!

KATE: At the risk of being boring, I, too, choose Fumi Yoshinaga!

ANNA: I agree!

ASH: I adore Fumi Yoshinaga’s work, so I am incredibly excited for Tamaki & Amane. (And also Moto Hagio’s.)

Pick of the Week: Climbing and Clouds

April 14, 2025 by Michelle Smith, Sean Gaffney, Katherine Dacey, Ash Brown and Anna N Leave a Comment

MICHELLE: I am looking forward to both Riverbay Road Men’s Dormitory and The Little Bird Sleeps by the Sea. Presumably, the latter will be much more wholesome, however, so I will pick that one for brain-balm purposes.

SEAN: Gonna have to give it to the manga with the most striking cover this week, because The Climber makes me want to see what his deal is.

KATE: That sound you hear right now? That’s me screaming with excitement over a new installment of Go With the Clouds, North by Northwest, one of the weirdest and most consistently satisfying series I’m reading right now. I’m also going to hop on The Climber bandwagon, as it looks great, if potentially vertigo-inducing. This is definitely a head-to-the-comic-shop week for me!

ASH: While I am intrigued by several of the novel offerings this week, it’s The Climber for me, too!

ANNA: I’m with Kate this week, I’ve ordered both Go With the Clouds, North by Northwest and The Climber. What an exciting week!

Pick of the Week: Cats and Monsters

April 7, 2025 by Sean Gaffney, Michelle Smith, Anna N and Ash Brown Leave a Comment

SEAN: I guess I’ll go for more bad things happening to reincarnated nobles with the 2nd part (1st half) of The Trials and Tribulations of My Next Life As a Noblewoman.

MICHELLE: With the state of everything being as it is, the solace offered by A Man and His Cat seems like just the thing.

ANNA: This week, I’m picking my hope for Veil to be released next week. I’m guessing next week I will pick the actual manga Veil instead of my hope for it.

ASH: Well, I received notification that Veil has been delayed. I thought that was the one title this week I was really interested in, but then I remembered that Bubbles Zine is publishing Maruo Suehiro’s Beautiful Monster. A master of ero-guro, expect the volume to be exquisitely illustrated but definitely not for everyone.

Pick of the Week: Pink Candy Picks

March 31, 2025 by Ash Brown, Sean Gaffney and Michelle Smith Leave a Comment

ASH: I find this week my heart torn between two debuts. The first is Pink Candy Kiss—josei is becoming more common in translation, which delights me, but we still don’t see too much josei yuri. The second is the BL title vs. LOVE, because I know it’s going to be difficult for me to resist a delinquent manga taking its inspiration from Shakespeare.

SEAN: I’ll go with Pink Candy Kiss as well, which seems the more appealing of the two yuri debuts this week.

MICHELLE: Same here (though I’m looking forward to a Tamon’s B-side binge!)

Pick of the Week: Gods, Ghosts and Teenagers

March 24, 2025 by Sean Gaffney, Katherine Dacey, Michelle Smith, Anna N and Ash Brown Leave a Comment

SEAN: There are a couple of debuts I’m very interested in. But my pick is the final volume of Teasing Master Takagi-san, a series I’ve loved since it began. I doubt it sells well enough to justify the spinoff starring their child getting licensed, but I can dream…

KATE: A new installment of The Summer Hikaru Dies is reason to rejoice, so I’m making it my pick of the week.

MICHELLE: I’m also intrigued by The Summer Hikaru Died, but my pick goes to GOGOGOGO-GO-GHOST!, which looks like a lot of fun.

ANNA: I’m curious about The Failure at God School, as I’m always intrigued by paranormal shoujo series.

ASH: I’ll be joining Anna in picking The Failure at God School as the debut that intrigues me the most this week, though everyone’s picks for ongoing series are all solid choices, too.

Pick of the Week: No, It’s Not About the Iditarod

March 17, 2025 by Ash Brown, Sean Gaffney, Michelle Smith, Anna N and Katherine Dacey Leave a Comment

ASH: I’ll admit, I had no idea that Satoru Noda had created a hockey manga before Golden Kamuy. I am immensely curious about its relaunch, so Dogsred is my pick this week!

SEAN: My pick is Did You Think My Yuri Was Just for Show?, as I always appreciate yuri with adults not in high school. Plus it’s complete in one volume.

MICHELLE: I’m pulling for Dogsred this week!

ANNA: Me too! Dogsred sounds interesting!

KATE: Is it a hat trick if I also pick DOGSRED?

Pick of the Week: Ersatz Spy x Family

March 10, 2025 by Sean Gaffney, Michelle Smith, Anna N and Ash Brown Leave a Comment

SEAN: There’s nothing that really leaps out at me this week, but I’ll take a flyer on Assassin & Cinderella, which is josei, but it’s a Gangan title, so I assume josei-ish? In any case, I like spies and I like assassins.

MICHELLE: I very much enjoyed the original Tokyo Tarareba Girls, so even though I’ve not managed to check out the sequel, I’m sure it is also excellent!

ANNA: I’m with Sean this week in being curious about Assassin & Cinderella.

ASH: While I am likewise curious about Assassin & Cinderella, my pick this week goes to Minecraft, not so much for myself but for the fanatic ten-year-old at home. (I’m pretty sure I’ll get some bonus parent points for bringing it home, though. )

Pick of the Week: Surprise Extra Volumes

March 3, 2025 by Michelle Smith, Sean Gaffney, Katherine Dacey, Ash Brown and Anna N Leave a Comment

MICHELLE: Since I cannot decide between an epilogue volume of My Love Story!! and the debut of A Star Brighter Than The Sun, this week I will award my pick to Kazune Kawahara herself! I have loved everything I’ve read that she was involved in.

SEAN: It’s definitely a tie for me between My Love Story!! and Skip Beat!. Manga with exclamation points for the pick.

KATE: I’m with Michelle: My Love Story!! is one of my all-time favorite shojo manga, so put me down for another installment.

ASH: Likewise! I was not expecting a continuation of My Love Story!!, but I am absolutely here for it; I loved the original.

ANNA: My Love Story!! for me as well, what a nice surprise!

Pick of the Week: Pretty and Haunting Faces

February 24, 2025 by Sean Gaffney, Michelle Smith, Ash Brown, Anna N and Katherine Dacey Leave a Comment

SEAN: Obviously my pick this week would be Short Game: Mitsuru Adachi’s Baseball Short Story Collection, except we know that Amazon date is wrong. So instead I will pick It Takes More Than a Pretty Face to Fall in Love, because it makes me nostalgic for the days of 20 years ago when Hana to Yume titles fell from the skies like rain.

MICHELLE: I can get behind that! And it does have a little bit of a Lovesick Ellie vibe, which I appreciate.

ASH: I’m going to go a different direction this week and pick Hauntress. There were some things I really loved about the creator’s later series Dragon Head, and some things I really didn’t, so I’m curious to see how a shorter form story fares.

ANNA: I don’t know! I’m going to go for It Takes More Than a Pretty Face to Fall in Love as well, because the pull of Hana to Yume nostalgia is strong.

KATE: I’ll join Ash in picking Hauntress, as I also have vivid memories of reading Minetaro Mochizuki’s Dragon Head back in the day.

Pick of the Week: Still Interested

February 17, 2025 by Sean Gaffney, Ash Brown, Michelle Smith, Katherine Dacey and Anna N Leave a Comment

SEAN: As I sit here having lost power yesterday due to an ice storm, I realize I need comfort manga. My pick is the 2nd volume of The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy At All.

ASH: We haven’t lost our power (yet), but I will keep you company by picking The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy At All. I’m really looking forward to finally reading the series now that I’ve gotten my hand on the first volume; hopefully this second one won’t prove to be as challenging to acquire!

MICHELLE: No ice storms here, but absolutely The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy at All for me!

KATE: My pick of the week is Mujina into the Deep. How did a new Inio Asano title fly under my radar?! I guess that’s just a sign that we are living through an era of Peak Manga Abundance.

ANNA: I’m going to pick Honey Lemon Soda as a reminder to myself to get caught up on that series!

Pick of the Week: The End of Adulthood

February 10, 2025 by Michelle Smith, Katherine Dacey, Sean Gaffney, Anna N and Ash Brown Leave a Comment

MICHELLE: This is one of those “Welp, I never managed to read any of these, but now that it’s ending I will tout its final volume” weeks, in which I throw my endorsement behind Even Though We’re Adults.

KATE: In an act of solidarity with my fellow Olds, I’m also picking Even Though We’re Adults. More manga for grown-ups, please!

SEAN: Tempting as it is to watch the cast of Even Though We’re Adults struggle to reach baseline adulthood again, I cannot resist the yearly release of A Certain Scientific Railgun, and will once again try to remember what was happening.

ANNA: I’m going to go for Fall In Love, You False Angels because the premise is appealing and the cover appeals to me. I’m shallow!

ASH: As far as debuts go, I’ll join Anna in picking Fall In Love, You False Angels as I can’t resist secret martial artists. But I’ll also join others in picking the final volume of Even Though We’re Adults as I’m always glad for Takako Shimura manga.

Pick of the Week: Yona Meets the Horrors

February 3, 2025 by Sean Gaffney, Michelle Smith, Ash Brown, Anna N and Katherine Dacey Leave a Comment

SEAN: The obvious choice, Pet Shop of Horrors, was not my bag back in the day. So I’ll go for Yona of the Dawn. It’s never a bad time to pick Yona.

MICHELLE: I am definitely excited about Pet Shop of Horrors, but I might actually be more excited about the conclusion to Usotoki Rhetoric. I liked this low-key historical mystery series, and look forward to seeing how it ends.

ASH: Debut-wise, I’m looking forward to giving Pet Shop of Horrors a try and so will make it my official pick. I missed the series the first time around but know many people who remember it fondly.

ANNA: I’m glad that Pet Shop of Horrors is back in print, but I’ll always pick Yona of the Dawn if given a chance!

KATE: I’m excited to see a new edition Pet Shop of Horrors; the young’uns need to know what their elders were reading back in the day!

Pick of the Week: Assassins and Bike Shops

January 27, 2025 by Ash Brown, Michelle Smith, Sean Gaffney, Katherine Dacey and Anna N Leave a Comment

ASH: There are quite a few debuts that intrigue me this week but which also give me slight pause because something doesn’t seem to sit quite right with me about their premises. All but Takahashi from the Bike Shop, that is. I’ve actually been looking forward this one for some time. (And actually recently started biking again, myself.)

MICHELLE: I am in the same boat! I might check out Killing Line and Home Sweet Home, but Takahashi from the Bike Shop wins by virtue of not involving assassins or teenage co-ed cohabitation.

SEAN: I think I’m not that into much this week, but Killing Line definitely has my attention, so let’s go with that.

KATE: I’m with Sean: Killing Line looks like a potential bright spot in an otherwise dreary week of new releases.

ANNA: I agree, Killing Line has my attention this week.
