Manga Bookshelf's Weekly Features

KATE: There’s plenty of product this week, from long-running shojo favorites like Kimi ni Todoke to new light novel series. My vote, however, goes to Chi’s Sweet Adventure, a spin-off of the Chi’s Sweet Home anime. I’m not expecting anything too ground-breaking here, just some cute kitty antics. What looks good to you?

SEAN: It feels odd to be picking nonfiction as my pick of the week (and prose for the second week running), but the Mari Okada autobiography, From Truant to Anime Screenwriter. I am looking forward to a lot of Viz stuff as well, but Mari Okada is definitely my pick this week.

MICHELLE: I’ll go with the 29th and penultimate volume of Kimi ni Todoke, even though I fully intend to hoard my copy and read it along with the final volume, since we have to wait until December for that one (sniff)!

ANNA: There’s a ton of great manga coming out this week! I’m going to have to go with the latest volume of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Chronicles. I might be hopelessly far behind in my reading of this series, but I love that it is getting the deluxe hardcover treatment.

ASH: I’ll join Anna this week in declaring JoJo my pick! I’m actually double-dipping for Stardust Crusaders because the deluxe edition is so handsome. There’s plenty of other manga coming out that I plan on giving a read, too, though!

SEAN: My pick this week is tricky, especially with so much good manga. There’s Nozaki-kun, Silver Spoon, Murcielago… that said, as you’d expect, my eye is drawn to light novels. No, not Vending Machine, though I am morbidly curious. My pick is I’ve Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level, which not only has a female protagonist but seems to be dedicated to “relaxing and taking it easy” despite the max level. I like the idea of an isekai with the mood of, say, Flying Witch.

MICHELLE: Because I am confident at least one other person will pick Silver Spoon, I’m going with the eighth Yowamushi Pedal omnibus. I rejoice every time there’s a new volume of this series.

KATE: I like To Your Eternity, but jeez — it’s a downer. My vote goes for volume two of Silver Spoon, the only manga series in English that features at least three udder-ly wonderful jokes about cows per volume. (Yeah, I went there.) (No, I’m not sorry.)

ANNA: I’m so far behind, I haven’t read the first volumes of To Your Eternity and Silver Spoon, but out of everything coming out this week, those are the titles that I’m sure I’d like.

ASH: There are so many great releases again this week, it’s difficult to pick just one! Many of my favorites have already been mentioned–Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun, Silver Spoon, Yowamushi Pedal, To Your Eternity–and I’m not even going to try to choose among them. And so, even though it’s not manga, I would like to take the opportunity to call attention to Perfect Blue: Awaken from a Dream.

MJ: Probably predictably, I’m Silver Spoon all the way this week. I absolutely loved the first volume, and I’m anxious for more. Also, I deeply appreciate Kate for the cow pun.

MICHELLE: I am, of course, looking forward to DAYS 8 and Giant Killing 12, as well as the second volume of Again!!, but I’ve been anticipating Wotakoi for a long time, so it’s gotta be that.

SEAN: I really should be picking Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction, but I’ve had experience with thinking I’ll love Asano titles and then finding them too dark. So instead I too will go with Wotakoi, which looks like a lot of fun.

KATE: Oof… there’s too much good stuff to pick just one title this week. If I had to limit myself to one, however, my vote would be for volume two of Again!!, a fresh take on the time-travel-to-high-school genre. It’s funny, rueful, and sometimes cringe-inducing — just like high school, only with better jokes.

ASH: I’m thrilled by pretty much everything that’s been mentioned so far. For ongoing series Again!! and Spirit Circle are probably the top of my list this week. As for debuts, I look forward to giving Wotakoi a try, but I’ll make Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction my official pick since no one else has yet. (I will never be able to say or type the title without looking at it though, and maybe not even then…)

ANNA: I liked the first volume of Again!! so much, I’m happy the second volume is coming out so soon after I finished the first one! That’s my pick!

SEAN: Even though I have reservations, I admit My Boy is my Pick of the Week. I’m curious to see how it’s handled, and how good the writing is. I want to know why Vertical wanted to license it. It’s intriguing.

MICHELLE: I’m wary of My Boy, so I reckon I’ll just go the shoujo debut route and pick You Got Me, Sempai. I can’t say I’m super-excited about it, though.

KATE: Hmmmmm… I don’t see anything on this week’s list that feels like a must-buy, so I’m going to focus instead on my ever-growing pile of unread manga. That manga isn’t going to read itself, you know!

ASH: I’m going to follow Michelle’s lead this week and go the shoujo debut route. In my case, I’m curious about Mermaid Boys and its gender-reversed take on The Little Mermaid.

ANNA: I’m sort of half-Kate, half-Ash. I’m most likely to spend my time this week trying to get caught up on the unread stacks of manga in my house, but I am also curious about Mermaid Boys.

MJ: I’m in the same boat as everyone else here this week, in that I’m a little wary of everything. But I think I’ll join Ash and Anna and throw my vote behind Mermaid Boys. That’s a lot to live up to, Mermaid Boys. Good luck.

MICHELLE: I’m looking forward to so much this week! Ace of the Diamond, Chihayafuru, Promised Neverland, My Hero Academia, to name but a few. However, seinen romantic comedy from Mitsurou Kubo wins in my book. It’s gotta be Moteki. Plus, you get the first half of the series in one package. Nice!

SEAN: There is, frankly, an embarrassment of riches this week. including every single Shojo Beat title, as well as The Promised Neverland, which will be brilliant and make me suffer. But yes, I’m going with Moteki, a title we would never have seen here if not for Yuri on Ice taking off the way it did. I’m not complaining.

KATE: Moteki and The Promised Neverland are my must-read manga of the week. If I had to choose just one title, though, it would be the third volume of The Promised Neverland, since previous installment ended with a game-changing revelation.

ASH: I’m actively following so many of the series coming out this week! But when it comes to the pick of the week, debuts tend to get most of my attention, and so Moteki it is for me! (Although I’m also rather curious about Kenka Bancho Otome… )

ANNA: There’s a ton of great stuff coming out this week! It makes it so hard to pick! Like many others I have to give Moteki the edge though.

SEAN: I’m torn this week between Seven Seas’ release of Cutey Honey a Go Go!, an updated manga featuring the classic leads as adults instead of schoolgirls, and Vertical’s release of CITY, the new comedy manga from the creator of Nichijou. If pressed, I will pick Cutey Honey, but I’m going to be getting both.

MICHELLE: I’m not super excited about anything, but I do enjoy Waiting for Spring, so I’ll go with that.

KATE: If you drew a Venn diagram of my taste in manga and Sean’s, the overlapping region would include both of his picks for March 27th. The end is nigh?

ASH: Hahaha! It’s not nearly as uncommon for Sean and I to be interested in the same manga, so it’s perhaps not too surprising that Cutey Honey a Go Go! is the release that’s caught most of my attention this week.

ANNA: There aren’t many series coming out this week that really appeal to me, but I have to say I am most intrigued by Cutey Honey a Go Go!, so that’s my pick.

MICHELLE: There are quite a few good things coming out this week! I’ll definitely be reading the latest Giant Killing and Wake Up, Sleeping Beauty, and I’m happy to see more Sweet Blue Flowers. Too, there’s Perfect World, a josei series with a very interesting premise. But still, Twinkle Stars is coming to an end, and I find I’m really in the mood to see how this one wraps up, so that’s my pick for this week.

SEAN: Sadly, I suspect I will be the only one picking this, meaning I can’t call Pick of the Week “Take Back Your Mink”. But my Pick this week is definitely the first omnibus of Dragon Half, which I’m hoping will let me wallow in nostalgia.

KATE: I hate to be predictable, but my pick is volume four of Golden Kamuy. Is it a cooking manga with action sequences, or an action manga with lengthy discussions about squirrel meat preparation? Danged if I know, but I’m hooked.

ASH: So much is coming out this week that I’m looking forward to! Sweet Blue Flowers, Golden Kamuy, Twinkle Stars, Dragon Half and more. I’ll take this opportunity to pick one that hasn’t been mentioned by someone else yet, Natsume Ono’s ACCA 13-Territory Inspection Department. The first volume was a slow burn, but stylish and intriguing.

ANNA: There’s a lot of great titles coming out this week! I have to go with my general inclination to celebrate josei whenever a new series comes out, so my pick is Perfect World.

MJ: since I’m going last here, I’ll round things out by picking the third omnibus of Sweet Blue Flowers. I’m a fan of this series, and I’m a fan of angst, so this works well for me.

SEAN: My pick this week, despite my whining and groaning, goes to the 12th and final volume of Genshiken: Second Season. I’m afraid to say that my reason for this is entirely selfish. It’s because MY SHIP WINS! HAH! (cough) Or, in other words, the harem plot is finally satisfactorily resolved. I will miss complaining about it.

KATE: Predictably, my pick for the week is the fourth installment of The Girl from the Other Side, but I’ll need a chaser for that one — words like “moody” and “harrowing” come to mind when describing it — so I’ll throw a copy of Sorry for My Familiar in the basket, too.

ANNA: There’s not a lot coming out this week that appeals to me, but The Girl From the Other Side is so unique and surreal, it would likely be my pick during a week with many of my favorite series being released.

MICHELLE: I’m with Kate and Anna on this one! For my chaser, I’ll go with Blue Morning, as I love BL with a complex storyline.

ASH: Oh, that sounds like a great plan, Michelle! The Girl from the Other Side is absolutely marvelous and is without a question my pick. I definitely look forward to getting my hands on Blue Morning, too, though. I don’t read quite as much BL as I once did, but the series is very high on my list, BL or not.

MICHELLE: There’s a lot that I’m getting this week. Ace of the Diamond, Haikyu!!, One-Punch Man… But, honestly, this week’s pick was preordained because one of my favorite series only comes out twice a year: Skip Beat!, I choose you!

KATE: I’m suffering from a manga hangover at the moment, since last week was EPIC. Is it OK to plug Again!! and Silver Spoon a second time? ‘Cuz there’s nothing coming out this week that makes me as happy of either of those debuts.

SEAN: My pick this week goes to a title I know nothing about except really good word of mouth. There was much happiness when Kaguya-sama: Love Is War was licensed, and I am excited to see why.

ASH: Like Kate, I’m still thrilled about last week’s debuts. I’m looking forward to catching up on some ongoing series this week, though, such as Frau Faust and Haikyu!!.

ANNA: Last week was great and this week is pretty good too! Like Michelle, I’m always thrilled when there is a new Skip Beat volume, so that is my pick!

SEAN: My pick this week is Silver Spoon Again!!, a touching story of a young man who dies from overworking himself as an agriculture student in Hokkaido, but is given the opportunity to go back and live his life again, and becomes an ouendan cheerleader for the school’s equestrian squad.

MICHELLE: Ha! I am behind that pick 100%!

KATE: I’m on Team Silver Spoon this week, but for selfish reasons: I’m hoping that Silver Spoon will be such a hit that Yen Press will rescue Hiromu Arakawa’s Hyakusho Kizuko and offer it in a snazzy print edition. JManga released the first volume in 2012 before folding up its tent, and I’ve always felt it deserved a second chance with American readers. Here’s a link to my original review; it has 100% more cow manure jokes than Fullmetal Alchemist.

MJ: I have been hoping for Silver Spoon so much for so long, that has to be my pick! Hiromu Arakawa is a manga goddess and I am always on her team. And hey, I will also get behind Kate’s argument. More Arakawa is always better!

MICHELLE: I’ll get behind it, too. There are definitely several JManga titles that I wish could find new homes.

ANNA: I’m also looking forward to Silver Spoon. I always feel like throwing a party whenever a manga I thought would never be available here gets released in translation.

ASH: Like everyone else here, Again!! and Silver Spoon are definitely at the top of my list this week. I’ve been waiting to read Silver Spoon longer, so I guess that’ll be my official pick, but I’m looking forward to the debut of both series a great deal.

MICHELLE: By now, it probably goes without saying that I will definitely be getting the new volume of Chihayafuru, so I will instead pick Voices of a Distant Star. I never read it the first time around, but I remember MJreally loved it. The your name. movie made me cry buckets, so I bet I will probably love this story, too.

SEAN: I’m definitely picking up Voices, but my pick this week goes to Giant Spider & Me. A combination of food manga, sweet slice of life, and post-apocalyptic survival, it feels like every new trend we’ve had brought into one title.

KATE: I’m exited about the return of Voices of a Distant Star, and charmed by the idea of a slice-of-life story about a girl and her giant spider, but my must-read manga this week is Fukushima Devil Fish, a collection of short stories by Susumu Katsumata. And yes, the Fukushima of the title refers to the nuclear plant that experienced a partial meltdown after the 2011 Tohoku earthquake; according to publisher Breakdown Press, the anthology includes “two stories from the 1980s on the subject of ‘nuclear gypsies,’ the men who labor under oppressive conditions to maintain Japan’s fleet of nuclear power plants.”

ASH: I’m certainly curious about Giant Spider & Me since learning that it is in fact a food manga but, like Kate, Fukushima Devil Fish is what takes priority for me this week.

ANNA: There’s a ton of great manga coming out this week, but I’m most interested in Voices of a Distant Star, since I wasn’t able to catch it the first time it was released.

SEAN: My pick this week is the 15th volume of Haganai: I Don’t Have Many Friends. It’s been 15 months since the last volume, where we saw Kodaka finally getting the ever-loving crap kicked out of him for his feigned obliviousness. Will this actually shake up the harem, though? I want to find out. Or at least see him get pounded again.

KATE: Any week that sees the release of a new Descending Stories is a good week in my book, but I’m also stoked for Theory of Happiness, a sequel to one of 2017’s most pleasant surprises: I Hear the Sunspot. It wasn’t as dramatic or splashy as some of 2017’s best books, but it won a place in my heart for its sensitive portrayal of male friendship — something we don’t see often enough in our popular culture.

ANNA: I agree with Kate, I Hear the Sunspot was such a wonderful surprise. Theory of Happiness is my pick of the week, I’m eager to find out what happens next with this series.

MICHELLE: I haven’t yet managed to read I Hear the Sunspot, so while I’m sure its sequel will be great, I’ll cast my vote for the fifth volume of Descending Stories, one series I have finally managed to read and am enjoying quite a bit.

ASH: I’ll definitely be reading the latest volume of Descending Stories, but this week my heart (and my pick) belongs to Theory of Happiness. I loved I Hear the Sunspot and have been looking forward to its sequel from the moment I learned that it existed.

MJ: Theory of Happiness! Theory of Happiness! Theory of Happiness! I’m not sure what else to say.

MICHELLE: I will definitely be picking up the tenth Yona of the Dawn, and Takane & Hana is intriguing too, but having been positively stunned by the awesome that is Promised Neverland, I must pick the second volume of that series. I literally made an entry on my calendar to remind me.

SEAN: I honestly am torn. I enjoyed Takane & Hana so much – it’s exactly the sort of manga I love. But The Promised Neverland was so good last time and feels like the more IMPORTANT manga out this week. Really, get both. Don’t try to choose. (It helps that they’re nothing alike.)

KATE: I vote for volume two of The Promised Neverland. ‘Nuff said!

ASH: Like everyone else so far, the next volume of The Promised Neverland is certainly high on my list. However, I’m pretty excited to read the psychological thriller Perfect Blue, too. Even if it wasn’t the basis of Satoshi Kon’s striking film, the novel sounds like it should be something right up my alley.

MJ: Since I am the big loser who hasn’t actually read the first volume of The Promised Neverland, I will go ahead and indulge my interest in Takane & Hana, which has lured me in with a combination of its source magazine and its spunky-looking heroine. Shoujo, I am in your corner this week!

ANNA: I enjoyed the first volume The Promised Neverland and I’m intrigued by Takane & Hana, but the title that thrills my heart is Yona of the Dawn . It just keeps getting better and better, and at 10 volumes in has built up an extended cast of characters that I’m rooting for.

SEAN: Some interesting stuff out this week, both in manga and light novels. I will be predictable, though, in choosing the first Baccano! manga. I read this when it came out as chapters digitally, and am greatly looking forward to seeing it in print. Plus, content that wasn’t in the novels!

MICHELLE: I will be predictable by expressing my anticipation for another installment of Giant Killing, but I’m awarding my official pick to the ninth and final Full-Time Wife Escapist. I’ve enjoyed this series very much!

KATE: I second Sean’s pick of Baccano!, since I am obsessed with the flashback scenes in The Godfather Part II and will watch or read anything that reminds me of them. I realize that Baccano! is even MORE over the top than anything Mario Puzo ever wrote, but I think that’s actually a good thing. It’s an offer I can’t refuse!

ASH: With the promise of a little bit of yuri, a little bit of boys’ love, and a whole lot of complicated relationships, the debut of Nameless Asterism is the release I’m most curious about this week!

KATE: I suspect I’m not the only one who’s eager to read orange: future; I still get the sniffles just thinking about orange, and am eager to see how Ichigo Takano continues the story. Looking over this week’s new arrivals, though, I’m also curious about Made in Abyss, which sounds like a dark fantasy-adventure with an interesting heroine. And I’ll also give a plug for PTSD Radio, despite its unfortunate title and godawful covers. It’s a solid horror series that benefits from unique artwork and an unusual narrative structure.

SEAN: There’s several titles I’m interested in, including a final volume of Golden Time and the debut of Made in Abyss. But yeah, in the end the clearly obvious Pick of the Week is orange: future, which I reviewed here in a spoilery fashion, as Seven Seas helpfully noted. It may not please everyone, but it’s well-crafted.

MICHELLE: Having now read and loved the first two volumes of Frau Faust, I am definitely looking forward to volume three. But, yes, my heart really does belong to orange: future. I’m a little afraid of what it might reveal, given how much I loved the original series, but there’s no way I’m skipping it.

ASH: I’ll definitely be reading more of Frau Faust, and I’m rather curious about Made in Abyss, too, but orange: future is unquestionably my pick this week. Like so many others, the original series made a huge impression on me.
