Pick of the Week

SEAN: There’s so much coming out this week that I’m sure I won’t be able to easily choose what I’ll be… yeah, OK, it’s Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service. I hate being predictable, but come on, of COURSE it is.

MICHELLE: Aya Shouoto’s He’s My Only Vampire was a pleasant surprise for me, as it’s quite a lot better than her other title currently being released (Kiss of the Rose Princess). I look forward to seeing what volume three brings.

ASH: Hmmm, there really are quite a few manga that I’m interested in that are being released this week, but I’m with Sean in picking Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service. It’s a great series, and who knows when we’ll actually be able to pick it again?

ANNA: I feel like any appearance of Gundam: The Origin deserves a celebration, so that is my pick!

Which manga featuring Char Aznable is your favorite for the week?

MICHELLE: I really am gonna do it! I really am gonna read the first two volumes of Master Keaton daringly followed by the third, which is my pick of the week!

MJ: And I’m gonna stick by my boy Syoaoran and recommend that xxxHolic omnibus! So. Yeah. Take that, Sean. Or something like that.

SEAN: I should pick Fragments of Horror, really, but I suspect I like the idea of it more than the actual book, as I like my horror more manageable. So I’ll pick the 11th Haganai: I Don’t Have Many Friends, as they need all the friends they can get.

ASH: That’s okay, Sean, I’ve got Fragments of Horror covered. I’m very glad to see more of Ito’s work being translated into English. I have no idea if this collection of short manga will live up to his masterpiece Uzumaki (which I think is one of the best horror comics out there) but I’m definitely willing to find out.

What looks good to you this week?

SEAN: It’s a quiet week all around, with lots of continuing series. I’ll give a pick to one that’s ending, the 4th and final volume of Girls Und Panzer. I had originally thought this to be along the lines of Strike Witches, but to my surprise it’s a sweet and heartwarming school comedy, which just happens to have a completely ludicrous premise. Add in a final volume that includes a very well-drawn and understandable tank battle over multiple terrains, and I will admit that my maiden’s trembling heart was moved.

MICHELLE: I must choose between two frontrunners this week, and since I’ve picked Magi fairly recently, I think I’ll go with Say I Love You. this time. I’m a few volumes behind, but I look forward to picking up volume eight and getting caught up!

ASH: I think I’m going to have to go with Say I Love You, too. It’s been such a consistently good series.

MJ: I’m pretty much at a loss this week, so I’ll go off-list and mention that the KAIJU’s short comic Ring of Saturn just recently became available in paperback from the Sparkler Monthly shop! I reviewed Ring of Saturn back in January, when it was still an ebook only, and found a lot to love. Now all you old-school paper books folk can discover it too! PS: There’s a deleted scene from volume three of Off*Beat in the latest issue of Sparkler Monthly, and it’s pretty freaking adorable. You want it, Off*Beat fans. Trust me.

What looks good to you this week?

MICHELLE: So many of my favorites have new volumes coming out this week! I will definitely be devouring the latest Food Wars! and Voice Over! as quickly as possible, for example. But, as ever, my heart ultimately belongs to Natsume’s Book of Friends, whose eighteenth volume comes out this week, just as I was seriously starting to pine for a new one. I will try not to think about the fact that the next volume isn’t due ’til November.

SEAN: I’m going to go with So Cute It Hurts!. Because twins. Because cross-dressing twins. Because I wanted to see Suki Desu Suzuki-kun!! by the same author licensed, so this is the next best thing. Because cute!

ASH: I’ll admit, cross-dressing twins has me intrigued. Also, juvenile delinquents. So Cute It Hurts! it is!

ANNA: I also agree that the combination of cross dressing and juvenile delinquents has me looking forward to So Cute It Hurts! the most!

MJ: I’m going to have to go with the majority vote here. So Cute It Hurts! looks potentially awesome in a delightfully goofy sort of way, and I’m nothing if not an optimist when it comes to new shoujo manga. Also, I fell off the Natsume wagon a while back (perhaps prematurely). Sorry, Michelle for leaving you all alone this week!

What looks good to you this week?

ASH: Although there are some great manga being released this week, I’m actually (and probably unsurprisingly) going to pick the most recent volume of Wandering Son. I suppose it was technically released last week since it suddenly appeared without notice, but I’m always happy to see a new volume whenever it arrives. And I’m still thrilled that this series is even being released in English at all!

MICHELLE: Speaking of wandering, I reckon I’ll go for Jiro Taniguchi’s Furari this week. I tend to like Taniguchi’s works a lot, though it’s been a long time since I read one, and having a stroll through Edo with someone equipped with an “inexhaustible capacity for wonder” sounds pretty wonderful!

SEAN: I’m going to go with A Silent Voice this week. Yes, I may have disliked most of the cast, but that was the point for a series like this, where the entire plot is about how difficult it can be to redeem yourself after doing something truly loathsome, and if it’s even possible. It’s also a good look at disabilities that shows how difficult it can be for a child with hearing loss to fit into a peer group.

MJ: I’m very happy to see the latest volume of Wandering Son and I’m definitely interested in A Silent Voice, but I’ll throw my vote in with Michelle’s this week for Jiro Taniguchi’s Furari. These treats from Fanfare-Ponent Mon are so rare and wonderful, it’s hard to let one slip by without making a fuss. So consider this my fuss. Gimme, gimme.

What looks good to you this week?

SEAN: Let’s see… Goong, Emma, Emma, Goong… so I’m the tiebreaker, huh? Good thing I pick first! Won’t be breaking the tie, though, because it’s time for Sean to highlight another of his pet series. Umineko: When They Cry is technically halfway done, at least in terms of arcs – in terms of actual volume count we have a bit more to go. I’m particularly excited for End of the Golden Witch, as most Umineko fans agree that it’s the best of all the manga adaptations.

MICHELLE: Predictably, I pick Goong, especially since it’s my final chance to do so. I’m in the midst of a reread of this series, and it’s pretty much the quintessential manhwa, with plenty of arguments, true feelings concealed, and true feelings revealed, along with its own special blend of “sweet moments interrupted by really unfunny comedic bits with ugly art.” Really, it can’t be missed.

ASH: No question about it, my pick this week is Emma. Ever since Yen Press started releasing Kaoru Mori’s A Bride’s Story in a gorgeous hardcover edition, I’ve been hoping for a rescue of Emma. And now it’s here! My local library had a run of most of the old CMX volumes, so I’ve read the series before, but I’m thrilled that I’ll finally be able to own it. And in a beautiful deluxe omnibus release, no less!

ANNA: I have to agree with Ash, it is time to celebrate the rerelease of Emma. I’m thrilled for the folks who weren’t able to collect the series before, especially since Yen does such a great job on their deluxe editions.

SEAN: MJhas been busy moving into a new home, but trust me, if she were here to pick she would agonize between Emma and Goong but pick Goong. We all know this.

What looks good to you this week?

ASH: This may be one of the smallest shipping weeks for manga that we’ve seen this year, but there are still some interesting releases coming out. In particular, I’m curious about the debut of the award-winning series The Ancient Magus’ Bride which, if nothing else, has beautiful artwork.

MICHELLE: I suppose I’ll go for Love Stage! this week, as it’s been ages since I’ve read anything by Eiki Eiki and Taishi Zaou.

ANNA: There isn’t a ton to choose from, I will also pick The Ancient Magus’ Bride as the most interesting release this week.

SEAN: Yeah, of all the titles, Ancient Magus’ Bride is the one that leaps out at me.

MJ: I’m definitely interested in The Ancient Magus’ Bride, but for the sake of balance here, I’ll join Michelle in anticipation of Eiki Eiki and Taishi Zaou’s Love Stage!. I was a big fan of their collaboration Color when it came out here in 2009, so I’ll certainly give Love Stage! a try!

What looks good to you this week?

SEAN: There’s a lot of good stuff out this week, but I have to go with the continuation of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, giving us its retro 80s over the top ridiculousness. Now with added immortality.

MICHELLE: I’m very intrigued by Drug & Drop, though I confess I haven’t read volume one yet. But, as ever, my heart belongs to What Did You Eat Yesterday?. I just can’t help it.

ANNA: There’s a ton of great manga coming out this week, and if Sean hadn’t picked JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure I would probably have gone with that. But instead I will pick Spell of Desire, hooray for weird witchy romance!

ASH: Wow, this is a tough week to choose! Lots of great manga are being released that I’ll definitely be picking up. But since JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure and What Did You Eat Yesterday? have already been mentioned, I’ll take the opportunity to highlight The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. It’s a rare, full-color manga and it’s by Shotaro Ishinomori. Even if you’re not interested in video games, this should be worth a look.

MJ: JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is obviously a no-brainer. I’m also pretty well enamored of Drug & Drop. But since there’s plenty of support for the former, and I happen to know that I have another chance at the latter coming up soon, I’ll throw my vote alongside Michelle’s and go for my beloved What Did You Eat Yesterday?. This series remains a touchstone for me, and I’m always simultaneously thrilled and comforted to see a new volume cross my threshold. Definitely my pick of the week!

What looks good to you this week?

ANNA: Kodansha! So many things coming out from Kodansha this week! What Kodansha or non-Kodansha title do you have your eye on? Personally, I am going to go for the latest volume of Gundam: the Origin from Vertical.

MICHELLE: I really need to get caught up again on Say I Love You., so that is definitely my pick of the week!

ASH: I’m actually really curious to see how Maria the Virgin Witch continues to develop. There were a few things about the first volume that bothered me, but overall it was a very intriguing, and occasionally endearing, start to the series.

SEAN: I’ll go with the new Attack on Titan Junior High, because it will be hilarious.

MJ: I suspect my pick is a little bit obvious. You all should know by now that I can’t get enough of xxxHolic, and that includes the recent sequel/reboot/whatever-the-hell-it-is xxxHOLIC Rei. The truth is, CLAMP could continue to put stories about Watanuki in front of me for the rest of my life and I’d probably never get tired of him. That’s just the way things are. So, yeah. xxxHOLIC Rei. Bring it on.

What looks good to you this week?

SEAN: There’s a lot. Far, far too much. Railgun. Two SAO books. Intriguing debuts galore. Some of Viz’s most critically acclaimed series. Really, we are totally spoiled for choice here. I’ll go with the debut novel of Log Horizon, though. The manga was OK, but felt (as many adaptations do) like something that only readers of the original book would appreciate. I look forward to getting lost in yet another game world.

ASH: Oh, this is a tough week to choose! With so many great releases, it’s difficult to pick just one. In the end, I think I’ll go with Gyo. I’m always happy to see more of Junji Ito’s manga released (or in this case re-released) and the new deluxe edition should look great next to my copy Uzumaki.

ANNA: There’s plenty of manga coming out this week, but I have to go with the latest VizBig volume of Vagabond. That’s first on my to-buy list!

MJ: Okay, I’m definitely interested in all the SAO stuff coming out this week, but I gotta admit that the thing drawing me most strongly is the call of Zero-Sum. That is to say, Clay Lord: Master of Golems, gimme, gimme. The premise is a little questionable, in terms of my personal taste, but I need to see it to find out. That magazine pretty much has my number, and there’s no denying it.

What looks good to you this week?

ASH: As usual, there are a few things that I’m looking forward to among this week’s manga releases, but choosing just one as my pick is surprisingly easy this time. The first volume of My Neighbor Seki was an absolute delight, and the second volume should be as well. Sometimes I just need to read a manga that makes me happy, and My Neighbor Seki is one of those series.

MICHELLE: I’m sure that I will love My Neighbor Seki when I read it, but the fact remains that I don’t love it quite yet. What I do love, however, is Shinobu Ohtaka’s Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic, so I’m happy to see volume eleven out already!

SEAN: Just a moment, have to get my Tatewaki Kuno mask on… (does so) SEKI?! MAGI?! I CANNOT CHOOSE! I MUST HAVE YOU BOTH!!!!!

ANNA: There’s a bunch coming out this week that’s on my to-read list, like My Neighbor Seki, but I haven’t even read the first volumes yet! Is there a newish volume of One-Punch Man out? I’m going to pick that because tax season makes me want to read about punching.

MJ: Okay, yeah, yeah, I’m into Seki, and I’ll admit I never really got into Junjo Romantica, but despite that (and despite the “scared uke“-style cover, I’m still irresistibly drawn to Shungiku Nakamura’s The World’s Greatest First Love. There’s just something about BL manga set in publishing that lure me in like no other. Definitely my pick this week.

What looks good to you this week?

SEAN: There’s a lot I like this week, but Dengeki Daisy‘s final volume is absolutely my pick of the week.

MICHELLE: I am finding it insanely difficult to pick from amongst quite a few favorites with new volumes out this week. Skip Beat!, Food Wars! and Voice Over! are all must-buys, but I continue to be absolutely charmed by My Love Story!!, so I’ll award its fourth volume my pick of the week. Clearly, exclamation points are the way to my heart. Unless you are BTOOOM!.

ANNA: There are so many good manga coming out this week, but like Sean I’m going to have to go with Dengeki Daisy. It is a heartwarming story about a high school girl and her protective school janitor/hacker. There were plenty of high-stakes thrills along the way, but at the core this is a series about a found family. If you haven’t checked out this series yet, what are you waiting for?

ASH: Well, since Shojo Beat already has a strong showing (I’ll definitely be picking up Dengeki Daisy and My Love Story!), I’ll mix it up a bit with something completely different, the most recent volume of the dark, suspenseful, and and action-packed Ajin: Demi-Human.

MJ: Since I think I liked it better than a lot of other manga bloggers, I will take this opportunity to give a shout for the second volume of Chika Shiomi’s Yukarism. I’m a big fan of the author, and I found the first volume intriguing enough to keep me looking for more. That’s my pick out of this shoujo-heavy week!

What looks good to you this week?

ANNA: This week has the ending of a long-running series with Blade of the Immortal and a couple debut volumes. What looks good to you this first week of April? While there is plenty of manga coming out this week, the main volume that has my attention is What Did You Eat Yesterday? Volume 7.

MICHELLE: Yep, same here. As much as I admire Blade of the Immortal, my heart just belongs to Yoshinaga. I canna help it!

MJ: Same. Yoshinaga + food + relationships = the key to MJ’s heart. Forever. What Did You Eat Yesterday? can be my only choice this week.

ASH: I guess it’s up to me to make Blade of the Immortal an official pick! I’m always up for another course of What Did You Eat Yesterday?, but Blade of the Immortal holds a very special place in my heart as one of the first manga that I ever read. I’m looking forward to its conclusion.

SEAN: And as I hinted in Manga the Week of, my pick is the new Kodansha series Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches. If nothing else, I’m a sucker for delinquent stories.

What looks good to you this week?

SEAN: There is far, far too much here that I’m interested in, including many debuts. That said, my pick this week is a final volume, as I won’t be able to choose it again later. Soul Eater started slow for me, with the bizarre and surreal art keeping me going through the early volumes till I got to appreciate the bizarre, surreal characters more. Now it’s ending at Vol. 25, and I will miss it greatly.

ASH: Despite it being a big week for manga release, my pick is an easy choice for me. Like Sean’s, it’s also a final volume (although of a much shorter series). With it’s phenomenal artwork, fascinating, well-developed characters, and death-defying story, I am absolutely thrilled to be able to get my hands on the fifth volume of The Summit of the Gods.

MICHELLE: I’ll cast my lot with Love at Fourteen this week!

MJ: Okay, wow, I almost skipped out on this column today (moving week chaos), but holy cow are there a lot of promising manga for me to choose from! Yes, I’m interested in continuing/finishing series like the The Summit of the Gods, Love at Fourteen, and Sword Art Online: Progressive (how’s that for variety?), but there are also a few debuts that have really got my attention. Though I had mixed feelings about Olympos, I can’t deny that I’m looking forward to Angel of Elhamburg, the latest from that artist. And there’s no way I’m missing out on Kaori Yuki’s Demon From Afar, because c’mon. But I think I’ll throw my vote this week to the latest import from Zero-Sum, Karneval. Despite mixed reports from readers so far, I’m afraid that I just can’t resist the call. It’s beckoning, and I must answer.

ANNA: There’s so much coming out this week it is hard to pick! But out of all the manga coming out this week I’m probably most interested in Karneval, so that gets my pick as well.

What looks good to you this week?

MICHELLE: Even though I must admit that I haven’t gotten around to reading volume one of Master Keaton yet, I’m still gonna pick volume two this week, because Naoki Urasawa is involved and I like his stuff.

ASH: Another week, another batch of interesting manga. But I’ll admit, the release that I’m most curious about technically isn’t manga. Fumio Obata is an artist who was born and raised in Japan but who currently lives and works in the United Kingdom. I believe Just So Happens may be his first North American release, but the pages I’ve seen of it are beautiful.

SEAN: I’m fairly uninspired for this week, but will go for the third volume of Kokoro Connect from Seven Seas. The first two volumes impressed me in their realistic look at teenage hangups and worries, but the third takes a decidedly darker turn, and I was really surprised. Manga that surprise the reader these days should be cherished.

ANNA: I’ll also have to pick the second volume of Master Keaton. I’m hoping to dig into it this week!

MJ: I’m on board for Master Keaton and I admit a little curiosity regarding Servamp, but I think I’m with Ash this week. Just so Happens sounds pretty terrific.
