Manga Bookshelf's Weekly Features

SEAN: Lately it seems Pick of the Week is overflowing with choices, which is always a good thing. I’ll go with the debut of Anonymous Noise from Shojo Beat. For years I’ve been a fan of Hana to Yume series, and so I have high hopes for this new one. Plus that’s a fantastic cover.

MICHELLE: Oh, man. What a tough choice. I am looking forward to Anonymous Noise, and to another volume of Natsume’s Book of Friends, but I suspect that, when it makes its biannual appearances, it’ll be Skip Beat! that always ends up my official pick of the week.

KATE: I just ordered a copy of Ichi-F: A Worker’s Graphic Memoir of the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant. If any medium seems well-suited to telling such a harrowing, personal story, it’s manga. I might need to read the first volume of Anonymous Noise as a chaser, though…

ASH: I’m definitely interested in Anonymous Noise, too, but I’m with Kate this week. Ichi-F is a fascinating, important, and personal work that gets my pick.

ANNA: I ordered Ichi F for my library, and I’m excited about Anonymous Noise as well. However, Skip Beat! is such a special series, I can’t imagine not picking it for Pick of the Week.

MJ: There are a number of potentially interesting titles on the list this week, but the one that sticks out for me most is definitely Anonymous Noise. I’ll admit I’m a sucker for music-themed manga, and this is no exception.

ASH: Originally my pick for this week was so clear! I simply couldn’t pass up a gorgeous, deluxe box set of the Revolutionary Girl Utena manga (even if the contents might not live up to their presentation). Alas, the release date has been delayed until April. That being the case, I’ll fall back on one of my favorite manga series currently being released; Monthly Girls Nozaki-kun never fails to delight.

SEAN: I loves me some Nozaki-kun too, and I’m also very interested in the digital debut of House of the Sun. But my choice is the 2nd volume in Nisioisin’s Bakemonogatari novel, featuring Suruga Monkey and Nadeko Snake. There will be words. Oh so many words.

MICHELLE: I’m definitely interested in House of the Sun, and several other titles from Kodansha, but what I’m most asquee about is the continuation of Nodame Cantabile in digital-only releases, starting with volume seventeen!

KATE: My pick is the fourth volume of Sweetness and Lightning. It isn’t in the same league as my all-time favorite food manga — really, can anything top Oishinbo? — but its sincerity and appealing characters more than compensate for the occasional ham-fisted scene. In fact, I’m getting hungry just thinking about Sweetness and Lightning right now…

ANNA: I think out of everything coming out this week, I’m most excited about Monthly Girls Nozaki-kun. Bring on the wacky antics!

MJ: I’m always on board for more Nozaki-kun, but this week I have to join Michelle in celebrating the digital return of Nodame Cantabile! I was devastated when that series was dropped in the US, and I’m beyond thrilled to see it back, even if it won’t be able to fill my physical manga shelves.

SEAN: There’s quite a few titles I’m getting this week, but I’m not sure any of them really set themselves up above the rest as a Pick. As such, I think I’ll go with an old favorite and pick the 10th omnibus of Fruits Basket, which has Shigure’s nastiest speech to Tohru, and is therefore fascinating.

MICHELLE: I’m definitely all aboard for Fruits Basket, but after reading more about it, Erased sounds really interesting! Plus, it’s been nominated for all sorts of awards. I think I’ll be optimistic and pick it this week.

KATE: I’m torn between the latest volume of Dimension W and the first volume of Erased. I’m leaning ever-so-slightly towards Dimension W, if only because Yuji Iwahara draws manga like nobody’s business. Every detail on the page pops, and the characters are drawn with flair. And his world-building! You could read Dimension W just for the elaborate cityscapes. The story isn’t quite as engrossing as the art, but it’s fundamentally impossible to dislike an adventure in which Nikola Tesla’s research is frequently referenced.

ASH: I’m glad that Michelle picked Erased (which I will definitely be reading) because that means I can mention Magia the Ninth without feeling guilty. I can’t say it’s a great series–at times it’s barely coherent an I suspect that it was ended earlier than the creator originally intended–but I enjoyed the first volume immensely. I find it hard to resist the combination of music, magic, and historical references. The manga is absolutely ridiculous, but I’m getting a huge kick out of it and it makes me smile. Sometimes, that’s exactly what I need.

MJ: I have eternal love for Fruits Basket, of course, and I’m also interested in Dimension W. But I was absolutely thrilled to see Erased on the list, and that’s unambiguously my pick for the week. My husband and I watched the anime adaptation last year, when it was released for streaming in the U.S., and it was absolutely enthralling. This is a release I will not miss!

ANNA: I agree with many of my colleagues that Erased certainly sounds like the most interesting thing coming out this week. Looking forward to it!

MICHELLE: I have wished for an English release of Chihayafuru for nearly a decade now. It’s josei, it’s long, it’s about an obscure game… all of the things that made me sure I’d love it made it an unlikely licensing prospect. And yet Kodansha came through! I must say, I am already deeply loving their ramped-up digital initiative. I will surely be checking out Tokyo Tarareba Girls and Springtime with Ninjas (and Germany o/~), but Chihayafuru simply must be my pick this week.

SEAN: Absolutely Chihayafuru, if only so I can cross another title off my “this will never be licensed” bucket list.

ANNA: Michelle has said everything I would about Chihayafuru. As someone who loves josei manga, I wish more of it would be translated, and I’m delighted about Chihayafuru.

KATE: Since Michelle and Sean have already mentioned my top picks for the week, I’m going off-list to honor the late, great Jiro Taniguchi, who passed away on Saturday. A quick glance at online retailers like Amazon reveals that many of his manga are out of print. Two great titles that are still readily available are A Distant Neighborhood, a lovely coming-of-age story that’s funny, wise, and unsentimental, and Guardians of the Louvre, a handsome, full-color manga exploring the Louvre’s history.

ASH: Kodansha’s digital offerings of late really have been fantastic! I’ll throw in with everyone else and declare my top pick to be Chihayafuru. I’d also like to join Kate in highlighting some of Taniguchi’s work: A Distant Neighborhood is a personal favorite of mine as is his collaboration with Baku Yumemakura The Summit of the Gods.

MJ: From deep beneath a pile of snow, I raise my fist and shout, “Chihayafuru!” Yes, Chihayafuru.

SEAN: There’s a ton to choose from, most of it from Viz. So many of my favorites are getting new volumes it’s hard to narrow it down, but I’ll make it the new volume of My Love Story!!, which never fails to warm the cockles of my little heart.

KATE: My pick goes to Fuku Fuku Kitten Tales. Although it’s not quite in the same league as Chi’s Sweet Home, Fuku Fuku will appeal to cat fanciers. I particularly like the way Kanata Konami draws cats when they’re irritated; no one draws feline side-eye with quite such authority. Those feline reaction shots add a tart little zing to the Fuku Fuku stories that prevents them from becoming too cloying.

MICHELLE: Oh, man. Such a tough choice. Both Sean’s and Kate’s picks are on the top of my stack, but ultimately the title I’m most eager for is Haikyu!! because I’m addicted to its sports manga goodness.

ASH: It really is a tough pick this week, especially since there are so many Viz series that I’m following with new volumes being released. Sean has already mentioned My Love Story!! and Michelle has already mentioned Haikyu!!, so I’ll take this opportunity to mention Yona of the Dawn. It may not be as typographically emphatic, but it’s still a great series and I’m looking forward to reading more of the shoujo fantasy epic.

ANNA: If there’s a shoujo fantasy series out, you can be sure that I’m going to pick it. I’m going to join with Ash in picking Yona of the Dawn. It is firmly in the “get the team together” phase of the story, but I’m thoroughly enjoying it. I would love it if there were 2 or 3 series like it licensed at once!

MJ: I feel a little out of sync this week, with such a big haul and so little of it for me. But I will join Kate in appreciation of Fuku-Fuku Kitten Tales. More kitties is always something I can get behind, especially when they are drawn by this artist.

MICHELLE: Hm, probably I shouldn’t pick Wave, Listen to Me! for two weeks in a row, so this time I’ll go for Kindred Spirits on the Roof, which has been on my to-get list for quite a while.

SEAN: There’s lots I’m interested in, including lots of light novels and some amusing/disgusting horror. But yes, my pick is definitely Kindred Spirits on the Roof. This makes three Seven Seas picks this month. Kudos to them.

ASH: While I’m certainly interested in Kindred Spirits on the Roof there can be no other pick for me this week than Dissolving Classroom. Josei horror by Junji Ito? Count me in!

KATE: My vote goes to Junji Ito’s The Dissolving Classroom. It looks gross — in the best possible way — and funny — as all of Ito’s manga are. I don’t know if it’s studded with references to Umezu’s Drifting Classroom, but it seems as if there’s drinking game potential here!

ANNA: I’m with the folks who are choosing The Dissolving Classroom, it isn’t every week a quality horror release comes out!

SEAN: As always, there’s a ton of stuff I’d like to pick this week. The new digital volumes from Kodansha, the Nisioisin novel, new Horimiya and Furuba… that said, I will have my pick be the final volume of Umineko When They Cry: Dawn of the Golden Witch, if only as I’m not sure when the next arc will be coming out and I’d like to recommend it one last time. Even if it can be aggravating.

MICHELLE: I’ll definitely be picking up a few things from Yen Press this week, but I am officially picking Wave, Listen to Me! this week. Not only am I interested in radio stations, I also admire Samura-sensei’s artwork, so it’s the obvious choice for me.

ASH: I’m not usually one for digital manga but like Michelle the release I’m most interested in this week is Wave, Listen to Me! Samura’s Blade of the Immortal was actually one of the first manga that I ever read, so I’m always happy for the chance to read more of his work. I definitely hope there will be a print edition in the future, though!

MJ: I, too, will be jumping on the Wave, Listen to Me! bandwagon this week! Though I was never a big fan of Blade of the Immortal, I’m very interested in the premise of Wave. It’s the kind of story that, on the face of it, you’d expect to be written by someone like Moyoco Anno. I gotta check it out.

KATE: At the risk of sounding like a skipping record, I’m also going to surf the Wave. (Sorry–not sorry.) I liked Samura’s Ohikkoshi and Emerald — more than Blade of the Immortal, if I’m being honest — so I’m pretty sure Wave will be in my wheelhouse.

ANNA: No surprise, I’m also most interested in Wave, Listen to Me!. I have very fond memories of Samura’s non-Blade of the Immortal Work so I’m also very intrigued by this new title from him.

ASH: It’s a relatively small week for new manga releases but, unsurprisingly, there are still a few things that I’m interested in. Apparently I’m in the mood for quirky horror since both Franken Fran and Dorohedoro are high on that list. My official pick goes to Dorohedoro though as I can’t seem to resist it’s bizarrely charming characters and humor.

KATE: I didn’t find much in this week’s new manga arrivals, so I’m going off-list for my recommendation: Snow Blind, a TPB that collects all four issues of a limited-run series by Ollie Masters and Tyler Jenkins. The artwork is moody and gorgeous — who knew Alaska was such a good setting for noir? — and the plotting is skillful. Heck, even Warren Ellis seems to like it, so there’s that, too.

SEAN: Like Ash, it’s pretty much a choice between Franken Fran and Dorohedoro this week, and, like Ash, I will be picking the latter. Still one of the more surprising Viz licenses, especially without an anime, I am so pleased that this has gotten to Volume 20. Even if I will no doubt find it confusing again.

MICHELLE: I’m sure I would enjoy Dorohedoro if I actually got around to reading it, but since I haven’t, I’d feel weird recommending it. So, instead, I will recommend two series that I actually have finally gotten around to reading, after seeing both recommended multiple times on Manga Bookshelf: One-Punch Man and A Silent Voice. I am enjoying both quite a lot and can now add my voice to the chorus of praise.

ANNA: There isn’t really anything that appeals to me this week, but I’ve recently been trying to get caught up on The Demon Prince of Momochi House, which incorporates lovely art into a story exploring the relationship between human guardians living in a nexus between the human and spiritual world. That’s my pick!

MJ: I’m not particularly excited about anything on this week’s list, but I have a considerable backlog to get through, so that’s not necessarily a bad thing. First on my docket, I think, is the SuBLime series, Ten Count by Rihito Takarai. I have the first two volumes sitting here, with volume three on its way next month. I’m a little nervous about what looks to be a problematic relationship (therapist and patient), but considering how common that is in BL, I can at least take heart that the characters are adults, and that there isn’t a terrified uke on the cover. So I’m feeling optimistic.

SEAN: There’s a significant amount of stuff I’m getting this week, but I’m going to go with Seven Seas again, as my pick is for The Girl From the Other Side: Siúil, A Rún, because it’s winter and I therefore want more moody fantasy.

MICHELLE: This week, that Wolf-boy will be mine!

KATE: I second Sean’s pick: The Girl From the Other Side looks like the kind of Seven Seas title that a grown woman could read in public without raising too many eyebrows. That cover is swoon-worthy! The Midtown Comics website indicates that we can expect 4″ – 8″ of new VIZ product on Wednesday, so there’s temptation in that pile, too. I liked the first two volumes of Bisco Hatori’s Behind the Scenes!! enough to pick up the third. I’m also still enjoying One-Punch Man–miraculously, it hasn’t gotten stale–so I’ll probably pick up volume ten.

ANNA: There are some great manga coming out this week, but The Girl From the Other Side seems most interesting to me. I don’t normally pick up many Seven Seas titles, but I am very intrigued.

ASH: The Girl From the Other Side is easily my pick this week as well. The series has been on my radar ever since it was reviewed at Brain Vs. Book, so I’m thrilled to finally be able to read its English-language debut.

MJ: Am I really picking a Seven Seas title for the second week in a row? Wow, I really am. The Girl From the Other Side is by far the most interesting of this week’s prospects to me. Well played, Seven Seas, well played.

MICHELLE: Ash, that link of yours has convinced me to defect! To the Other Side!

MICHELLE: I adore Haikyu!! and Honey So Sweet and undoubtedly will be acquiring the new volumes, but I am very intrigued by Bloom Into You, particularly after reading Sean’s review, so that is my official pick for this week.

SEAN: There’s plenty of Viz this week to enjoy, but Seven Seas is where my focus is, with a new volume of The Ancient Magus’ Bride and a new series, Bloom Into You. I’ll make that my pick, as it starts off looking just like many other derivative yuri series, but its new take on an old genre is refreshing and intriguing.

ASH: It’s Bloom Into You for me as well! I’ve been looking forward to the series ever since the license was announced. I’ll definitely be picking up Haikyu!! and The Ancient Magus’ Bride, too, though.

MJ: I’m absolutely on board with the group, here! It’s Bloom Into You for me! A Seven Seas pick is a rarity for me, so that’s an especially strong statement.

ANNA: I’ll be the outlier here and pick the latest volume of Honey So Sweet. This cute but not cloying manga is a great read to kick off the new year.

SEAN: A bit of the post-Christmas blah, as there’s stuff I’m getting this week but nothing I’m wild about. I’ll make my pick the 2nd volume of The Ghost and the Lady from Kodansha, which features a great interpretation of Florence Nightingale.

MICHELLE: I think Cells At Work! Volume Two is the only thing I’m getting this week, so that makes picking it the obvious choice.

ASH: I’ll definitely be picking up the finale of The Ghost and the Lady, too, but my pick of the week has to go to Vinland Saga. For a time there it didn’t look like the rest of series would be translated, so I’m very happy to see more of the incredible manga finally being released.

MJ: I gotta admit there’s nothing I’m really keen to slap my money down for this week, so I’m going to go way off list. Sometime last week, Michelle convinced me that I needed to check out a digital-only series from SuBLime, The Night Beyond the Tricornered Window, and I have a feeling I’m going to be picking up all the available volumes pretty quickly this week, in my post-Christmas haze. I haven’t paid enough attention to these digital series, which is a shame, since so often the kind of BL that I love best is not the kind that is popular enough to warrant print releases. At $5.99 a volume, they’re decently affordable, too, at least for a short series! So that’s my major purchase for the week.

ANNA: I’m with Ash, I’m most excited about the next volume of Vinland Saga. I thought that we weren’t going to see another volume translated, so seeing a new volume released is a wonderful surprise.

MICHELLE: There are several things coming out from Yen this week that I’m pretty excited about, but the one that I most look forward to—even more than Fruits Basket, since I’ve read that a time or two already—is the fourth omnibus of Yowamushi Pedal.

SEAN: I’m basically reading half this list (whimper), but there’s no doubt my pick of the week is Bakemonogatari. I’ve loved Nisioisin’s writing for some time now, and this is both his most popular as well as his most mainstream series. The fanservice can be appalling, but I’m ready for it.

ASH: I’m right there with you, Sean! There are so many things being released this week that I’m looking forward to reading. Yowamushi Pedal, Tomie, Goodnight Punpun, and Gangsta: Cursed are all definitely high on that list, but I think the manga I’m most curious about this week (and which therefore gets my pick) is the debut of Bungo Stray Dogs.

MJ: So, I feel a little guilty, because if I hadn’t already read it and been somewhat disappointed (look to this week’s Briefs for my elaboration on this point) my obvious choice would have been Jun Mochizuki’s The Case Study of Vanitas, given my long-standing devotion to her previous series, Pandora Hearts. But as it stands, I’m going to have to go with Bungo Stray Dogs, which has the advantage of not having had the opportunity to disappoint me yet. Is that fair? Maybe not, but there you have it.

ANNA: I absolutely adore Gangsta, so the prequel series is what I’m most interested in this week. I hope Gangsta: Cursed doesn’t disappoint me!

SEAN: Well, I was going to pick the digital release of the Spice & Wolf novel, but Yen already bumped it back to the 20th with its 80 other releases that week. And tempting as it is to pick Magi by default as always, I will instead pick the 3rd volume of Complex Age, which sometimes hits too close to home, but is riveting.

MICHELLE: Magi is always a contender for me, but like Sean, I am going to go with Complex Age this time.

ASH: It’s Complex Age for me, too! The first volume surprised me and the second volume continued to impress me, so I’m very much looking forward to the third.

ANNA: I’m picking Complex Age too, it is extremely well done and feels quite unique compared to many of the other manga out there.

MJ: How can I possibly resist? Complex Age it is!

MICHELLE: There’s a trio of shounen favorites I will definitely be getting, but of these, I’m looking forward to Haikyu!! the most, I think. Karasuno’s up against the foes that took them out of contention last year. OMG, can they win?!?!

SEAN: I too am going to pick a shonen favorite, as the 13th volume of Assassination Classroom is particularly excellent, and reveals much about why Nagisa is the way that he is.

ANNA: Never has my choice been more clear, because a third volume of Yona of the Dawn is coming out!

ASH: There are quite a few manga being released this week that I’m looking forward to, including the most recent volumes of Haikyu!! and Yona of the Dawn, but my pick actually goes to the collection of erotic gay manga The Boy Who Called Wolf. Mentaiko Itto’s work tends to be good-natured and highly entertaining, so I’m happy to see more of his manga being translated.

SEAN: This week features some things I’m interested in, but no obvious knockouts. I guess I will go with the 2nd volume of Welcome to the Ballroom, because speed lines are important.

ASH: I’m all about the food manga this week. I’ll definitely be picking up the most recent volume of Sweetness & Lightning, but it’s the eleventh installation of What Did You Eat Yesterday? for which I’m most excited! I really love the series and am extremely happy that it’s even being released in English at all.

MICHELLE: Sweetness and Ballroom are most definitely on my shopping list, but I just love What Did You Eat Yesterday? so very much. It has to be my pick.

MJ: I’ve said Yoshinaga always has an edge with me, and this week is no exception. I love this manga with my whole heart. What Did You Eat Yesterday?, always.

ANNA: I’m very excited for more Welcome to the Ballroom. If only we got a dancing manga more than once a decade! That’s my pick!
