MICHELLE: It’s that time of year again! I’m very interested in the conclusion of Otherworld Barbara as well as I Hear the Sunspot and She and Her Cat, but I am simply unable to pass up my annual chance to squee about Kaze Hikaru. I agree with AshLynx, who expressed a wish that VIZ would start making the annual release a 2-in-1 volume. Otherwise we won’t catch up to where Japan is now until I’m retired!

SEAN: I can’t break with the yearly tradition. It’s definitely Kaze Hikaru as my pick. My goal is for it to sell well enough that we might see it… dare I hope… TWICE a year!

ANNA: Kaze Hikaru all the way for me as well. I love that series!

KATE: Add my name to the chorus of folks recommending Kaze Hikaru. I’m glad VIZ continues to publish new installments, but second Michelle’s request for a slightly faster release schedule. The East Coast will be underwater before we get the final volume here in the US!

ASH: Despite its slow release schedule, I’ve still somehow managed to fall behind with Kaze Hikaru. And so while I do plan on reading it because I do like the series, my pick this week (perhaps surprisingly) actually goes to Twinkle Stars. Although the series is a little trope-worn in places, I found the first two omnibuses to be both compelling and emotionally resonant.

SEAN: No real dilemma for me this time – my pick this week is the 2nd and final Queen Emeraldas omnibus. It’s Wagnery delicious!

MICHELLE: In the Wagnerian spirit, I should warble about my decision for at least ten minutes or so, but… Yep. Same.

KATE: I’m fresh out of Wagner jokes, so I’ll keep it simple: Queen Emeraldas is my pick of the week, too. If you like Star Wars or Blade Runner, you owe it to yourself to check out Leiji Matsumoto’s work; his sci-fi stories are as richly imagined as anything in the George Lucas or Ridley Scott canon.

ANNA: I read the first volume of Queen Emeraldas and it was a bit too bleak for my mood at the time. But even though I didn’t connect with this space opera as much as I expected to, it is undoubtedly the most important manga coming out this week, so it is my pick as well!

ASH: There are actually a few releases that I’m very interested in this week, such as the next volume of Descending Stories, but like everyone else here it’s the finale of Queen Emeraldas that gets my official pick. I simply can’t resist a dramatic, classic space opera!

MICHELLE: I’m a bit torn for my pick this week. Waiting for Spring is a shoujo debut I’ll be checking out, but it’s an unknown quantity. I’ve been burned before, so I think I’ll play it safe this week and go with Princess Jellyfish.

SEAN: I think I’ll play it safe too, because nothing makes me happier this week – in fact, I reviewed it already so it’s already made me happy – than the new Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun.

KATE: I’m torn between the compulsively readable Princess Jellyfish and The Hound and Other Stories. Although I’ve never been especially interested in H.P. Lovecraft’s writing, I do have a soft spot for horror manga. A quick glance at the preview suggests that Gou Tanabe’s artwork is crisp and atmospheric, so I’m leaning ever-so-slightly towards Hound for my pick of the week.

ASH: I’ll definitely want to read the next volumes of Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun and Princess Jellyfish as soon as I get my hands on them, but like Kate The Hound and Other Stories is what gets my official pick this week! (I tend to enjoy well-drawn horror manga.)

ANNA: New series are always something to celebrate, but I remember being totally amazed that Princess Jellyfish was licensed! Happy about the latest volume!

SEAN: So the Kodansha digital debuts I mentioned are actually moved to the 18th. This means my pick shall me an “older” digital-only title, The Full-Time Wife Escapist. The escapes are the best part.

MICHELLE: In the Kodansha digital realm, I’m definitely looking forward to the fourth volume of The Full-Time Wife Escapist. My real pick, though, is the second volume of Dreamin’ Sun, as I enjoyed volume one quite a bit.

KATE: Oof — this is some slim pickings. My suggestion: skip the manga aisle this week and watch GLOW instead. It’s a valentine to 80s pop culture that recognizes what a weird and sometimes awful decade it was. Great performances, snappy dialogue, and a big, appealing cast of characters made GLOW five of the best hours of TV I’ve seen this year.

ANNA: I find The Full-Time Wife Escapist such a fun series. I enjoy the unconventional not romance combined with slice of life activities and occasional discussions about the economy. That’s my pick!

ASH: While I’m curious to see where Dreamin’ Sun is heading, my pick this week is the final Legendary Edition of Akira Himekawa’s all-ages The Legend of Zelda manga. Up until this point I had resisted collecting the series, but the new edition’s larger trim sizes, additional content, and great design makes for an immensely appealing package.

MICHELLE: I’m happy about Days and Haikyu!! and Honey So Sweet, but the debut of Plum Crazy! easily snags my pick for this week. It hadn’t even been on my radar before Sean’s column, but now I’m desperate to read it. And the best part is that the series is sixteen volumes long and still ongoing!

SEAN: I am definitely looking forward to cat manga, and there’s a pile of Viz I want to read as well. My pick this week, though, is Appleseed Alpha, a manga interpretation of the recent movie. Deunan and Briareos were some of the first manga characters I really grew attached to, and I want to read this new hardcover omnibus even if Shirow isn’t writing it.

KATE: Call me a crazy cat lady if you must, but my vote also goes to Plum Crazy!. Cats doing cute things = manga gold.

ASH: There’s definitely a variety of things that I’m interested in and will be making a point to read this week, but since a new volume is released so rarely, my official pick will be going to Berserk. I don’t find the most recent story arc as viscerally compelling as some of the earlier ones but, if nothing else, Miura’s artwork can still astonish.

ANNA: Honey So Sweet has been so consistently adorable, that is my pick this week.

SEAN: I’ll be honest, most of my attention this week is focused on novels, what with Combat Baker and Nisemonogatari. But I picked a novel last week, so this week my pick is Land of the Lustrous, a new Kodansha series with gem wars but sadly not Steven.

MICHELLE: I’m looking forward to the second volumes of series whose debut volumes I liked a lot. Ordinarily, I’d pick Giant Killing, what with it being sports manga and all, but Flying Witch has an amusing kitty, and that gives it the edge this time.

KATE: I share Michelle’s enthusiasm for manga featuring cute animal sidekicks., but my vote goes to the digital-only release The Emperor and I, a comedy about a family living with an Emperor penguin. The story unfolds in short chapters of three to nine pages, so the formula isn’t as rigid as a 4-koma title; it feels a little bit like reading a collection of Sunday comic strips. Not sold? Here’s what I had to say about it back in May.

ASH: For me, my pick could be nothing other than Vinland Saga this week. The series has been consistently compelling from the very beginning. It’s also had great female characters from the start, but the most recent story arc allows the women in the series to shine like they haven’t before.

ANNA: I agree with Ash, I am very happy that new volumes of Vinland Saga are coming out after the series was paused for some time. It is rare for a series to combine great historical background with a truly compelling story and evocative art. Vinland Saga is my pick!

MICHELLE: I have read very few light novels and, to be honest, very few appeal to me. Sound! Euphonium is an exception, though. It’s about a high-school band—the kind with cumbersome brass instruments—and looks cute!

SEAN: Lots of my favorites, including Dorohedoro and Kitaro, and I’m also interested in Golden Kamuy. But like Michelle, my pick this week is definitely Sound! Euphonium. It’s not the sort of title you see translated to English at all, and I really want to see it succeed. Plus, brass band!

KATE: Is there a manga of Sound! Euphonium? Because I’d read that in a heartbeat. Until that arrives on bookshelves, I’m going to plug Golden Kamuy, a manly-man adventure in the vein of Kazuo Koike. The story takes place on the Hokkaido frontier in the waning days of the Russo-Japanese War. Though Golden Kamuy is violent — OK, really violent — it’s got a gonzo plot and great characters. Oh, and bears. Hungry ones. Here’s my two cents on volume one.

ASH: Wow! There are so many things being released this week that I’m interested in that it’s hard to choose just one. As for ongoing series, Dorohedoro is always high on my list, as is Kitaro. I’m really curious to see how Erased continues to develop, too. As for the debuts, I’m with everyone else so far–it’s Sound! Euphonium and Golden Kamuy for me!

ANNA: Thanks to Kate’s review, I’m definitely curious about Golden Kamuy. Manly adventure manga set in Hokkaido sounds like a fun summer diversion.

MJ: Add me to the Sound! Euphonium crowd, here! I’m interested in many of these (especially the second volume of Erased), and Kate’s mention of bears intrigues the John Irving fan in me, but for once, a novel is sounding the most appealing. I figure I should go with that and give it a try!

SEAN: There have been a lot of yuri picks of the week this year, mostly as there have been a lot of yuri debuts this year. The latest is After Hours, a Viz title about a young woman who gets dragged to a club and finds her life turned upside-down! It’s my pick this week, despite putting the voice of Mo Tucker in my head.

MICHELLE: o/~ And someday I know someone will look into my eyes and say hellooooo… you’re my very special one…. o/~ I used to always close mix tapes with that one back in the day. Anyway, I am very excited about After Hours, but as usual my heart pines most strongly for sports manga and in this case it’s the third volume of Chihayafuru, due out digitally from Kodansha. I’m happy to see it coming out so soon after volume two and hope that becomes a trend.

KATE: My pick of the week isn’t a manga but a manhwa: Uncomfortably Happily, due out from Drawn & Quarterly on June 13th. It’s a semi-autobiographical story by Yeon-Sik Hong about a pair of artists who trade life in the big city for a rural retreat, only to discover that life in the countryside isn’t as simple as they imagined it would be. After reading Rebecca Silverman’s glowing review, I ordered myself a copy.

ASH: I’m definitely interested in After Hours, but I’m with Kate this week in picking Uncomfortably Happily. I actually ended up with an advanced copy of the work, so I already know it’s great! My own review of the manhwa should be posted in just a few days.

ANNA: How am I behind in my Chihayafuru reading!? Having two volumes to read to get caught up is exciting though. Volume three of Chihayafuru is my pick for the week.

MJ: Did someone say “manhwa from Drawn & Quarterly”? I’m pretty sure that’s my pick, even if I read nothing more about it. Combine that with the recommendations so far, and it sounds like it’ll completely make my week. Uncomfortably Happily is the comic for me this week!

MICHELLE: I suspect that most of my compatriots are going to pick something else, but I can’t deny that what I am most looking forward to this week is the sixth Kuroko’s Basketball omnibus. I fell a little behind on the series, and so the prospect of reading two of these 2-in-1s back-to-back sounds like sports manga paradise.

SEAN: No question, absolutely, my pick this week is My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness, which was simply one of the best autobiographical manga I’ve read.

KATE: Sean and Erica Friedman’s reviews of My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness have put it on the top of my list for this week, too. I’m also looking forward to the sixth installment of Sweetness & Lighting, a manga which always makes me feel happy and hungry in equal measure.

ASH: The obvious choice for my pick of the week is My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness but I’m definitely looking forward to giving Manga in Theory and Practice a read as well. Of course there’s the newest volumes of Haikyu!! and Yona of the Dawn, too… so many great manga this week!

ANNA: If Yona of the Dawn is coming out, there can be no other pick for me, as I’m captivated as always by this great shoujo fantasy series.

MJ: I’m definitely in the My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness crowd this week. This is, by far, the book that most interests me on the list. Also, I must now immediately go and read Sean and Erica’s reviews.

SEAN: It’s an odd week with the majority of titles being digital ones. I’m not blown away by anything, but I guess I’ll go with the debut of Real Girl, a Dessert series that almost seems to be a genderbent version of a very common shoujo trope.

KATE: That’s some slim pickings… oof. If I had to choose a title — and death was not an option — I’d cast my vote for The High School Life of a Fudanashi. After reading several relentlessly grim books, I could use a silly palette cleanser. Fudanashi looks like it fits the bill: it’s a 4-koma title about a straight boy who likes BL but feels weird about telling his friends. It will either be a hoot or a dreary compendium of “But I’m not gay!” jokes. Let’s hope it’s the former.

MICHELLE: I intend to check out Kasane and Real Girl, but of all the options, I’m most happy that the digital release of Nodame Cantabile continues briskly, so I’ll pick volume twenty of that series this time.

ASH: Like Kate, my pick this week goes to The High School Life of a Fudanshi. The premise has promise, but it also has the potential to go completely off the rails (and not in a good way). I’m curious to see which direction the series takes!

MJ: There’s not a lot for me this week, but I’m cautiously edging towards The High School Life of a Fudanshi, with the understanding that it could turn out to be either awesome or horrifyingly offensive. I’m open to finding out which.

ANNA: There really isn’t much that’s an automatic pick for me, so like Sean, I’ll go with Real Girl as I enjoy genderbent shoujo from time to time.

MICHELLE: While I am undoubtedly excited for the debut volumes of Descending Stories and Delicious in Dungeon, the second volume of The Full-Time Wife Escapist ended on such a terrific cliffhanger than I am most eager to get my (digital) hands on volume three!

SEAN: My pick is your name., the novel by Makoto Shinkai. Being the only person in the world who hasn’t seen the movie, I know nothing about it except that it was a huge phenomenon and will likely involve a boy and girl in some way. I’m hoping fro more sweet than bittersweet, but given it’s Shinkai, not expecting that.

KATE: The first volume of Descending Stories was solid but not swoon-worthy, so I’m going to make a pitch for Yen’s two big debuts: Delicious in Dungeon, a manga that promises to combine gustatory adventures with D&D action, and Girls’ Last Tour, a “post-apocalyptic slice-of-life” series (Sean’s words, not mine).

MJ: I’m with Sean this week. I did see your name. (and loved it, of course) but I’m pretty excited to read the novel that started it all. It’s an unusual order of things for Shinkai, and I’m really interested to see what (if anything) he did differently once he was making the movie.

ASH: Oh, there are so many great and interesting things being released! The second volume of Murcielago, the debuts of Delicious in Dungeon and Girls’ Last Tour, the continuation of Monthly Girls Nozaki-kun, and more. (It looks like Yen Press has it out for me this week; my wallet weeps for me.) My pick, however, goes to Descending Stories: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju which I’ve been eagerly anticipating ever since Kodansha Comics first announced its license.

ANNA: This is a really good week for manga! There are many great series coming out this week, but like Michelle I am most eagerly looking forward to the third volume of The Full-Time Wife Excapist, I’ve been enjoying this series very much and can’t wait to read the next installment in the series.

SEAN: Most of the titles I’m interested in this week are digital. My pick is the second volume of Chihayafuru, because I still can’t believe it got licensed at all.

MICHELLE: On any ordinary week, I would be seconding that pick heartily, especially since my love of Chihayafuru is significantly tinged with gratitude. I’m really looking forward to Drowning Love and Our Precious Conversations, too, but I gotta award my vote to the second volume of The Girl from the Other Side. It’s a lovely, magical series with the sort of main character who I just can’t help but love with all my heart.

KATE: This week, I only have eyes for one manga: the latest volume of The Girl From the Other Side. It’s easily the best thing I’ve read this year, with a hauntingly beautiful story and gorgeous pen-and-ink drawings. I had to pinch myself when I realized that it’s published by Seven Seas, everyone’s favorite purveyor of monster girl T&A.

ANNA: Like many people, I’m excited about both The Girl From the Other Side and Chihayafuru, two very different manga. I think I’m going to have to give the edge to Chihayafuru though, the extended flashback in the first volume has me very curious about what’s happening with a more grown-up version of the characters. I’ve been waiting impatiently for the second volume!

ASH: Likewise, I’m interested in both Chihayafuru and The Girl from the Other Side, but in my case The Girl from the Other Side is the obvious choice for my pick of the week. I absolutely loved the first volume with it’s striking artwork, intriguing characters, and mysterious atmosphere. I’m really glad that Seven Seas licenses such a wide variety of material!

MICHELLE: Probably I should be casting my vote for the third volume of Tokyo Tarareba Girls. It’s josei and it’s kind of brilliant, but it’s also devastating in its own kooky way. Instead, I think I’ll pick something really comforting, like the third volume of Ace of the Diamond.

SEAN: My pick is the new My Neighbor Seki, whose variations on a theme have yet to get old.

KATE: I second Michelle’s enthusiasm for Tokyo Tarareba Girls. It will make you laugh, cry, and cringe in equal measure — that’s how good it is!

ASH: I’m certain that I would absolutely love Tokyo Tarareba Girls, but this week I only have eyes for the next volume of Requiem of the Rose King. The series is a fascinating and heart-wrenching reimagining of history with strong Shakespearean influences and gorgeous artwork.

MJ: Requiem of the Rose King 4evah. That’s just the way things are.

ANNA: Any week that Requiem of the Rose King comes out makes it an automatic pick for me too. This is one of the most compelling series currently coming out and every new volume is a treat. A treat of emotional anguish and surrealism!

SEAN: I am defying the rules! I will pick two titles this week and no one can stop me! Because we’ve been waiting for My Brother’s Husband since it was announced last year, but there’s also the debut of Dreamin’ Sun from Seven Seas! I cannot choose! I must have you both!

MICHELLE: Well, if you’re doing it, then so will I! The same two titles for me, if you please!

KATE: Well, if Sean *and* Michelle are going to break the rules, then I will, too. I’m equally thrilled for My Brother’s Husband, but I’m also planning to buy the penultimate volume of My Love Story!!, one the funniest and smartest shojo comedies VIZ has published, period. It’s one of the few series that always makes me laugh — something I can’t say of many other titles that strain too hard for comic effect. If you haven’t been keeping up with My Love Story!!, now’s a great time to get reading!

MJ: I actually find myself not even remotely torn here. I am entirely on board for My Brother’s Husband this week. It’s absolutely the pick for me!

ASH: I’m definitely interested in a fair number of this week’s manga releases, including the previously mentioned debut of Dreamin’ Sun and the continuation of My Love Story!! among others, but like MJthere’s really only one pick for me this week and that is My Brother’s Husband. I couldn’t be happier that this series is being released in English.

ANNA: This is a very good week. Like everyone else I’m excited about My Brother’s Husband, but I have to admit I’m feeling so nostalgic about My Love Story!! now that the series is coming to a close, I have to go with that.

MICHELLE: I’m both excited and grateful for more digital josei from Kodansha, but of course it’s sports manga that gets me stupidly excited, which is the case for Tuesday’s debut of Days.

SEAN: I’ll go with the 3rd Bakemonogatari novel, which promises to dig into Tsubasa Hanekawa’s psyche at long last, as well as metatext, annoying sexualized scenes, and more insults hurled with love than you can shake a stick at.

KATE: I only have eyes for one title this week: Shuzo Oshimi’s Happiness. For my money, Happiness is the best title Kodansha is publishing right now: it’s smartly drawn, expertly paced, and meticulously plotted, with a memorable, sympathetic lead character and a well-rounded cast of supporting players. More impressive still is that the horror elements feel fresh and surprising; this isn’t just another teen vampire manga. If you do give it a try, be prepared to squirm or cringe from time to time — not because it’s gory, but because it captures the special awfulness of being fifteen in vivid detail.

ASH: I’m with Kate. I don’t have much to add after such an eloquent description, but Happiness is definitely the manga release which commands my attention this week.

ANNA: OK, Happiness wasn’t on my radar before, but now it certainly is! This week would be much smaller without Kodansha’s digital releases, they are bringing back older unfinished series and producing more and more digital josei, which is a very good thing. My pick of the week is Kodansha’s digital program in general. I hope it inspires other publishers to bring out more titles that might be too noncommercial for print release.

MICHELLE: At the risk of sounding like a broken record…. Like 7SEEDS?!?!

ANNA: 7SEEDS!!!!!!!

MJ: So, first I have to decide whether I can forgive my co-bloggers for momentarily making me think that someone had actually licensed 7SEEDS. If I ever manage that, or indeed manage to recover from that brief moment of excitement, I will pick… something else? I haven’t started Happiness, but it sounds like I should.
