A few months ago, I polled Manga Bookshelf readers to see if there was enough interest to warrant opening a discussion forum here on the site. In the end, the vote came down to a similar number of “Yes” and “No” responses, and a whoooole slew of “Maybe”s. So I’ve decided to give it a shot and see how things go.
If you already have a user account at Manga Bookshelf, you should be automatically registered in the forums. If not, I’ve opened up site registration to all. I’ve opened up a few public forums to start, and reader participation is strongly encouraged! Here are a few options, right off the bat:
Reader Reviews: Post your own reviews of new (or old!) manga. Be sure to follow instructions on formatting your subject lines to that people will be able to easily identify who you are and what you’re reviewing!
Where to Buy Manga: Profile your favorite local shops to help other fans in your area find the best prices and selection!
Manga Sales-Watch: Heard about a great manga sale? Tell everyone about it here!
Fandom & Fanworks: Talk about fanfiction, fanart, and your favorite ‘ships here!
I’ve kicked things off with our first Topic of the Week—a weekly moderator-led discussion. This week’s topic: What’s on your manga wish list for this holiday season?
Come join me!
ETA: I am aware of a problem with the stylesheet not loading on the Profile Options pages. I am working on trying to get this resolved. In the meantime, though the current form is ugly as hell, it seems to be functional. Update: As of 9:40 EST this is fixed!

November 23, 2012 at 2:42 pmJust wondering, you’re gonna put a link to the forum on the home page soon right :D

November 23, 2012 at 2:43 pmYeah, just figuring out where. :D

November 24, 2012 at 3:58 amI just registered for the forum! I was looking forward to joining in the discussion, but I don’t seem to be able to start or reply to a post. (My permissions show that I can only view posts.) I apologize in advance if I am missing something obvious. Or if there’s a waiting period before new members can post that’s fine; I’m not in any rush.

November 24, 2012 at 7:10 amIt’s definitely not supposed to be that way. I tried tweaking something—let me know if it worked!
Also—for some reason, it seemed to consider you a “pending” member. I’m wondering if there’s an e-mail confirmation it’s waiting for you to click on? I told it to consider “pending” members as “members” so hopefully that’ll fix it either way, but I wondered why you were pending in the first place. :)

November 24, 2012 at 3:44 pmThank you very much—I was able to reply to the wish list post!
After registering, I received an email to activate my account and clicked on that link. I changed my password from the default to something more personalized and started browsing the forum. I did receive a second email after that, with my username, initial default password, and login link. As I was already logged in, I didn’t click on it, but maybe I should have?
Anyway, everything seems to be working fine now, so thank you again! ^_^

November 24, 2012 at 4:46 pmI seem to have the same problem as gerichan. I registered but it doesn’t let me post. I don’t think I missed any emails. I tried logging off and on again but nothing changed. Username is rijs, had to add an S in there because it required four letters. :(

November 24, 2012 at 4:49 pmOh, it treats me as a forum member when commenting here too. No need to tell you my username then. I used to comment as Rij and tried to enter that in the comment box.
learning curve…

November 24, 2012 at 4:51 pmRij, try now! You will be able to change your display name once you get in to Rij if you like. :)
For some reason it’s not adding people automatically as members after they sign up. I don’t know why!

November 24, 2012 at 4:54 pmIt’s working now! Thanks!

November 26, 2012 at 12:18 pmHeh, I’m having the same problem, too, with being unable to post.

November 26, 2012 at 12:21 pmHm, that’s really odd. A plugin conflict was causing the original problem, and I deactivated that plugin… and other people have successfully signed up/posted and so on just this morning! But I’ve manually added you, so it should work now.

November 26, 2012 at 2:26 pmHuh, that is weird. But it’s working now, so thanks! *goes to post*
