3 Things Thursday: Pretty Pictures

Wow, this has been a weird week. I mean, really, seriously weird. Weird on levels I can’t quite talk about here. But whatever the weirdness, it is in times like these that I really just want to look at something pretty. No, seriously. That’s the only thing to be done. So today, that’s what we’re going to do. It’s Thursday. And these are…

3 manga spreads that are just freaking beautiful:

You’ve seen them here before… you’ll see them again.

1. The Heart of Thomas | by Moto Hagio | Fantagraphics

2. Please Save My Earth | By Saki Hiwatari | Viz Media

rinfalling

3. xxxHolic | By CLAMP | Del Rey Manga

dream-2

I have more. So many more. But this will do for now. Got favorites of your own? Gimme!

Gotta be that double page freeze frame in v15 or 16 of Basara. You know the one, it inverts black and white and time just stands still, and the page demands that you stare at it for at least 30 seconds.

Osamu Tezuka made some cool/weird things. I.L. and MW and Ode to Kirihito all have them. In terms of pure awe though, the Phoenix and Buddha both have really gorgeous spreads.

Hikaru no Go, when (to avoid spoilers here), Hikaru is just staring at his room. With the curtain gently blowing in.

I so know the Basara spread you mean. It came really close to being in this column. Also, the rest? <3 <3 <3 SO MUCH LOVE.

My favorite manga spreads are in the shojo Swan. The dance movements are so gracious.

I know that exact Hikaru no Go spread, and it never fails to break my heart a little. I’d like to add “pretty much everything in A Bride’s Story” to this list, but one of my particular favourites is this one: http://www.bigplanetcomics.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/brides-story-interior.png.
