January 6, 2013 at 2:37 amJust saw a link to this blog. My first time ever seeing the manga bestseller list. It is surprising to say the least. Based on parallel anime popularity, you would assume that the distributions would be different. Did not expect Sailor Moon to take up so many top spots. Maybe they had a new volume released recently?

January 6, 2013 at 3:41 amSailor Moon volume 8 in November, vol. 9 coming soon this January.
Since the method tracks online sales, I’d say the stellar performance of Sailor Moon in this context is due to older fans (introduced to the series in the 90s via the anime TV show, in syndication) who are motivated and have credit cards, but not always the time to find a good local bookstore with manga, or a local comic shop.
It’s not just the older fans, though: Sailor Moon is finding new teen and tween fans, if the customer who have bought it in my bookstore are any indication. Even the kids go, “Sailor Moon? I’ve heard of that…”
