About Matt Blind

Matt has been a bookseller for more than 11 years, and a blogger for more than 9. His first manga was Planetes in 2003, his first anime was Star Blazers (Uchu Senkan Yamato) in 1981: In fandom terms, this means he is ooooold. Despite advancing decrepitude, Matt maintains the world's only steam-powered differential computation engine dedicated to manga (which occasionally spits out bestseller lists) & still holds down a 45-hour a week job at the bookstore.

Comments

  1. Just saw a link to this blog. My first time ever seeing the manga bestseller list. It is surprising to say the least. Based on parallel anime popularity, you would assume that the distributions would be different. Did not expect Sailor Moon to take up so many top spots. Maybe they had a new volume released recently?

    • Matt Blind says:

Sailor Moon volume 8 in November, vol. 9 coming soon this January.

Since the method tracks online sales, I’d say the stellar performance of Sailor Moon in this context is due to older fans (introduced to the series in the 90s via the anime TV show, in syndication) who are motivated and have credit cards, but not always the time to find a good local bookstore with manga, or a local comic shop.

It’s not just the older fans, though: Sailor Moon is finding new teen and tween fans, if the customer who have bought it in my bookstore are any indication. Even the kids go, “Sailor Moon? I’ve heard of that…”
